Sphinx 21x30 cm Pen and ink on paper
The symbolism of the sphinx varies from culture to culture. Here i represented it as a female which is usually found in ancient Greek culture. In the story of Oedipus and the Sphinx of the Theban myths she appears as a cunning, mischievous figure who stops travelers and demands they answer her a riddle. From the Jungian perspective this can be interpreted as a confrontational force in the psyche. Her appearance combines human, animal and bird features into one, therefore representing a union of opposites.
