christen belmonte only ever believed she was good for one thing on this earth — soccer. the result of two twenty-somethings nowhere near ready to have a baby, christen was adopted by a loving couple three days after being dropped off at a fire station, their version of a miracle into a relationship slowly crumbling and the inability to have biological children a heavy cloud over their town. doting as they were, try as they might, the marriage would fizzle and fade into a divorce. left in the middle was christen, somewhat reserved and shy as a child up until the middle-class attempts to find an extracurricular led her to soccer. lightning struck, spiderwebbing beautifully and captured so effortlessly by christen. she'd wear it around her neck for the next thirty years of her life. soccer, she believed, was her Gift. it gave her everything she needed to become Herself: the confidence, a determined mindset and a buoyant personality, the connections to finding herself in the rooms with the people who would become her key pillars. all she knew was soccer and the successes it reaped, and she would chase it around the world a dozen times over to never lose that glittery feeling in her chest.
she couldn't live on top forever, no matter how many world cups and olympics and awards and championships she had under her belt. the forward that so often found herself as one of the faces of us soccer made her entire world balance on the very thing she was good at ( the lone thing, she was convinced ) and her first career injury following the 2023 world cup would be a career ending injury. with it came an entire structural collapse, one that christen could not fathom. fast as lightning, fast as the fianceé that had left her, fast as her parents' marriage fell apart, fast as the world moved for someone who once sat atop it, she tried to outrun the inevitable to no avail. leaving her home of portland for new jersey only ended up nailing her coffin shut. christen is experiencing a very different sort of grief at the moment now that her retirement is public knowledge: she's mourning her sense of self, left to lick her wounds in windsor bay where her physical therapist resides.

christen was diagnosed with adhd when she was thirteen.
she’s in more physical pain than she’ll ever say, and basic quality of life things are a lil hard for her with her knee right now — she’s at physical therapy four days a week trying to help out the baby cartilage in her knee grow into something strong. lately she’s been on a big swimming kick.
despite being a world class athlete, she’s big into weed. it helps with the knee pain to some extent, so she’s got a medicinal prescription for it, but whether she’s smoking it or baking a banger edible brownie, it’s not unheard of for her to smell like marijuana.
unlike my menace child muse aylin, christen is an out and proud lesbian, and has been since she was a junior in college. she was quite the player when she was in her twenties — hello, soccer hot shot at your service — and has dated at least three of her former teammates across squads. she only publicly came out following the uswnt's win at the world cup.
athletics were only reason she graduated high school & college; she got a "throwaway" degree at unc in something she knew she could skate by in and wouldn't academically snipe her. spell check and a calculator were her best friends throughout it all, and to this day she won't go anywhere without her phone solely because she is very math conscious.
curates impeccable spotify playlists for any mood, vibe, and occasion. call her up if you need someone to put together an ideal tracklist or dj.
has quite the talent for art & was known to always doodle on her cleats (that were kind of masterpieces) — each year she draws or paints an original piece for the grassroots soccer gala auction to raise money for the organization. she has also auctioned off pairs of her cleats that she's drawn on in the past for lgbtq+ philanthropies or other non-profit global women's athletics organizations.
being in the kitchen and cooking has become a tactile sort of therapy for her (because she is not yet ready for talk therapy despite her doctors recommending it every time she goes in lol). she loves trying new recipes, baking at random (all) hours. is she any good at it? not really, but it’s a way for her to feel more connected to her mother and replicate the same feelings that food brought her during her childhood. sometimes likes to pretend she’s on an episode of master chef. she’s a dork, your honor.
she drives a jeep named emilia that's got a campfire marshmallow fragrance bottle hanging off the rearview mirror (think clove, vanilla, rosewood, and amber) and the audio system’s volume must sit on an even number between 8-16.
her jersey number for club was 28 and has been since college; for uswnt appearances, she has worn the number 8 since 2011.
all of her tattoos are self - drawn or were written out for her by someone of significance. she still has her ex-fianceé's initial tattooed on her left hand ring finger, the spur of the moment decision she made when they first got engaged and wanted to commemorate.
christen is DEEP in the depths of denial and will never ever ever say the R word (retired) even though that’s absolutely what she is. there’s still this tiny little candle flame that holds out hope she’ll be able to play in at least one more game even though everyone around her + her body knows that's not possible.
