Indigenous nations of Mexico

Rarámuri people, also known as the Tarahumara, are an indigenous people located in northwestern Mexico. Today they’re concentrated in the Copper Canyons of the Sierra Madre Mountains. They are known for their long distance running abilities. Their population is an estimated 70-100 thousand and they’re part of the Uto-Aztecan language family.

The faded remnants of the once-great Zapotec civilization were conquered in 1502 by the Aztec Empire. When the Spanish defeated the Aztec, the Zapotec king  Cosijoeza ordered his people to not attack the Spanish, but survive. After Spanish take over of the area, uprisings against colonial authorities occurred in 1550, 1560 and 1715.
