How I Sketch 50+ Earbud Concepts (in Just 2 Hours)
https://youtu.be/Z88GQ8yhtro?si=RIJ3QgkrHOYP5tTj Welcome back Designer! To keep our daily creative momentum going strong, I want to share a brand-new video session with you today. Fast-Sketching Challenge The rule I gave to myself is simple but intense: open a huge canvas of 5000px x 3000px on Sketchbook Pro and completely fill it up. That's exactly how I came up with 59 earbuds in just 2 hours! When it comes to product design, your first few ideas are usually the most obvious ones. To truly innovate and discover unique forms, you have to push past the predictable and force your brain to explore new territory. Settings: 5000px X 3000px canvas on Sketchbook Pro In design sketching, quantity matters to build your memory of forms and come up with unexpected ideas! Focus Tip: Break Your Routine If you are not used to draw for long sessions, a really good way to start is to break your routine. Go draw outside to a cafe to create a new experience. A change of scenery is sometimes all it takes to lock you into the creative zone and keep your pen moving! Chou-Tac - Fast-sketching earbuds with focus in a cafe In your daily life at home, you may have this habit to open the fridge, to take calls, to have your family and kids (maybe dog too?) soliciting your attention. Any of these can completely breaks your flow! This is why it can be a smart move to protect your creative time as much as you would protect any working time at office. GOAL: Pull off a 2-hour drawing marathon with an absolute focus. To avoid distractions and the usual temptations, I packed up my gear and went to a cafe, ordered a hot ginger tea, and draw. Constructing Rapid Volumes When you watch the video, pay close attention to how I construct the volumes. Even though these are rapid concepts, they still need to look three-dimensional. I practice the Random Product technique. Remember to study your basic perspective and download the Designer Starter Kit (83 pages for beginner sketchers for FREE). Designing for User Behaviors: The Cyclist Example To innovate, let me give you a creative trick. Look for a counter-intuitive angle. Earphones play music in your ear, as initially it was made to isolate yourself from the rest of the world! Remember the Walkman when it was created? Suddenly, you could carry your own music privately anywhere you go, and isolate yourself from the world. (Imagine yourself living in that era, that a huge thing!) Even though it becomes the norm today, ask yourself if there are new situations where a total isolation may not be optimal. Think about city people navigating in "dangerous no pedestrian friendly" or chaos road. How to innovate fast? Find situations that are not yet fulfilled yet! For the functional part, I actually don't advise you to spend too much time on looking for 100% ergonomic study (yet) during this rapid sketching stage. Activate both ergonomy search with user behaviours to explore. A good ergonomy is first of all driven by a good idea. Why? Because no matter how great your earbud fit is, as a designer the magic is when it fits to specific people's needs, not generic. A cyclist in the city might want to hear both his music but also his environment and cars sound for safety. How does that specific need change the shape of the earbud? That is where rapid sketching helps you explore those different scenarios quickly and let your imagination innovate! Designer Notes and Lo-Fi Prototypes Years ago, I bought earphones for joggers with flat wires meant to prevent tangling, before wireless earphones become a thing. On paper (and on the packaging!), the innovation sounded amazing. But when I actually wore them to run, the flat wires were heavy and created annoying friction sounds when they brushed against my shirt. Itâs a perfect example of why real-life user behavior is so important to test! Your role during your ideation phase is to try to predict these events by visualizing users using the product with empathy.
You may want to come up with quick prototypes, like how Florian Augier likes to work when he designs sport goods for Decathlon. Practice With Me! Grab your tablet, or just a pen and a stack of paper, and try to fill a whole page. I recommend you an A3 paper. ID Sketching Earbud - Ideation 13 Don't worry about making every single sketch a masterpiece. The goal here is pure ideation and building up your visual library. Let your hand move, trust your perspective basics, and see how many variations you can come up with. Remember to use the line-weight technique to make your sketches pop! What if scenario In design sketching innovation, there is a Magic question to ask yourself when your mind goes blank: WHAT IF?What if the earbuds become a fashion accessory to wear like an earring? Some of your question may look ridiculous at start. If yes, that is great! Because it means your are questioning the status quo. ID Sketching Earbud - Ideation 20 - What if Fashion accessory ID Sketching Earbud - Ideation 22 Draw Details Big When you draw small items like earbuds, you need to zoom-in the product and drawing it big. It's even more true when you want to showcase a specific detail of that mini earbuds! Drawing big will give you a better resolution vision in your mind. When you draw details big, it's like setting up a 4K television in your mind! Because you'll now be able to draw them smaller with accuracy. ID Sketching Earbud - Ideation 34 ID Sketching Earbud - Ideation 34 - Draw details big Master your Perspective While it is true that for early ideation research, you don't need to have perfect sketch with a perfect perspective. However, if you are a beginner, you'll need to master fundamental perspective techniques, so your product can be understood without looking (too) awkward. ID Sketching Earbud - Ideation 44 Let me know in the comments which of the 59 concepts is your favorite, and tell me what product you'd like to see me sketch next! Keep sketching, Chou-Tac
How to Tell your Parents you Don't Want to Become a Doctor (But a Designer) - TIP 416
Sanchita is at a life crossroads: Her parents want her to go to medical field... but her heart says: "DESIGN". "I am very creative and I love to do creative stuff... it feels more like me." If you are in this situation, I know itâs tough. You feel like you have to choose between your dream and your family. But here is the thing: your parents don't want to "kill" your dream. They are just worried for you being extra cautious. Here is how you can talk to them: 1. Understand your Parents' fear (Don't fight!) Don't blame your parents. Open an healthy discussion. For parents, "Doctor" means safety. It means you will have a good life and no money problem. When you say "Designer," they maybe see a "lost artist" who struggle to pay rent. Who knows what they have in mind? Don't get angry and don't assume they want to "sabotage" your life. If you start a fight and say: "If you love me, you should support me!" you look like a child. It is not reasonable. They want the best for you from their own story: When they were young, becoming a doctor was an apotheose! Everyone wanted to be a doctor (or an engineer) at that time! It was the ultimate success. They want the best for you from what they know. Even though we all live in the same world, we see it with a different lens of our past. You too, when you'll be a parent, you might repeat the same to your kids who may also have bold dreams like you, just because you don't understand them well enough. Haa... The generation gap! I am myself from an immigrant family whose parents escaped the war in Cambodia in the 1970, a time where Chinese people were among the targets to hunt. I can't even imagine 1% of what they went through. When parents survive something like that, they want you to avoid any struggle: Safety first. Of course, I donât know your parents' story. But what I mean is: be the bigger person. Donât assume their motives. Simply ask: "What do you have in mind when I mention Designer?" If you discover their fear, you might realize they really care about you. Because they care, you owe them the time to explain what design really is today. I invite you to watch that hilarious comedy show from Jimmy O. Yang facing his" "dad's vision of life": "Everyone does what they hate for money, and use the money to do what they love." PlayJimmy O. Yangs career choosing with his Chinese dad | #jimmyoyang #standupcomedy #comedy #funnyFor our parents, itâs not about "prestige," itâs about survival. Once you realize they are just trying to protect you from the struggles they faced, you can stop fighting them and start educating them. 2. Design is not a hobby, it is a critical job Designer is a real and professional job! In every big company, like Apple, Nike, or Tesla, there are lawyers and engineers. But there is also the Designer. Without the designer, the product don't work and nobody buy it. A designer is not only someone who draw, he is the one with a vision. Someone whose mission is to make better products for people. It is not just a job, but a 24-hour lifestyle. You are constantly observing people daily and getting inspired to solve their problems. Art is often for yourself. Design is made for others. In other words, while in art, you leave your audience freedom to feel whatever your art inspired them, in Design, the communication is sharper. You communicate information to clients, colleagues, management. If you feel excited about that, tell them. Show them you are not fulfilling a drawing whim, but a role that matters. In other words, instead of putting the spotlights on what you want, direct the light on how designers are valuable and that people really make a living from being creative! TIP: For people who are not initiated, tell them about brands they know and use every day. Show them the phone in their hand, the car in the garage, or the shoes they wear. Explain there is a designer behind all these creations. And you want to become one of them. You are not just "doing creative stuff," you are solving problems for the world.
3. Bring your parents to your creative world Educate your parents on the design world If you want them to take you serious, you have to show you have a plan, and speak the language they know. Bring them into your world. Don't just say "I like drawing."Show them the top schools. Maybe bring them to visit some with you meeting professors and students. Let them see the professional environment with their own eyes. Show them the big brands that hire designers (Google, Dyson, Ferrari...). Those names carry weight and "safety" to parents. That may talk to them more. A small secret: If you want to be an independent designer (freelancer or open your own studio), maybe keep that for later! Lol. Itâs not about lying, itâs about reassuring them. Right now, your goal is to show them the industry is promising and that's what excites you. You will have years to train and figure out your real future plan later. 4. The "Safe Career Highway" trap Choose your career path following your passion works Many people take the "Become a Doctor, Engineer, Accountant highway" because everyone else is there. But if you are not passionate, you will get tired even before your eyes open when you wake up. I dislike the word "Burn-out," but that is exactly how you get there: doing things with no purpose every day, feeling miserable without any EXIT in view. My advice is to remove it from your vocabular. If that concept does not exist in your mind, there is a higher chance you get more resilient without that so called "Glass ceiling". As I told Sanchita: My conviction is someone passionate has a higher chance to succeed something tough than following the boring highway everyone take. Anyway, no matter what you do, life is unpredictable. Some of these jobs had so many applicants they face traffic jams. Follow your Design shining star, be flexible and you'll figure out how to get there. Design is tough! But if you love it, you will have the energy to become a Pro with recognition for your work, not your title. What about you? Do your parents support your creative path? Or are they pushing you to take the "Safe job" to be a doctor or engineer? Letâs talk in the comments! Hope it helps you follow what matters to you!Cheers,Chou-Tac BONUS: "Make your Parents Curious" Checklist Don't wait for a "big talk." Just casually bring your world into theirs. Make them curious about what you do, and use your heart to bridge the gap. The "What's That?" Spark: Leave a beautiful design book or a few of your sketches in the living room. When they ask about it, don't just say "it's a drawing." Say: "Iâm studying how to help people on ... with a product that..." The Gentle Question: Next time youâre having tea or a meal, ask casually: "When I mention I want to be a Designer, whatâs the first thing that makes you feel worried?" Just listen. Let them feel heard. You don't have to answer / debate now. Take time to understand them. If they feel listened, they might listen to you more too. The "Real World" Connection: While youâre using a gadget or looking at a car, mention: "Itâs amazing that a designer spent years making this safe for us. Iâd love to learn how to solve problems like that." Show you've built a design culture that could spark their interest. Share the "Safety" Names: If they mention a brand they trust (like Dyson, Toyota, or 3M), casually share: "I was reading that they have huge design teams. Itâs a very respected professional path now." If you see designer's articles, interviews, feel free to share with them. The "Baby Step" Invite: Instead of a 5-year degree talk, ask: "I found this professional sketching course. Would you be open to helping me try it for a month so I can show you the discipline it takes?" Final Tip: You aren't asking for permission to be a designer; you are inviting them to see the value you want to create for the world. When they see you working with sparkling eyes of joy, their curiosity will turn into support.
5 Steps to Winning Your Parents' Support for a Design Career Be self-driven and give your best! Is design a stable career compared to medicine? In the past, being a doctor or engineer was the only "safe" way. Today, the world is digital and physical. Every company needs a designer to innovate to survive. If you are a Pro, you are highly sought after. Stability comes from your skills and your ability to solve problems, not just your diploma. Remember: would you prefer to be a bored average doctor, or an outstanding designer that help the world?A doctor heals one person at a time; a designer can create a product that improves the lives of millions simultaneously. How do I handle the "Art is just a hobby" argument? Tell them that while Art is about self-expression, Design is about Strategic Problem Solving. In my teaching, I always say that sketching is a "thinking tool." It is not about making a masterpiece to hang on a wall; it is about communicating a vision. Show them that a designer's sketches are like an architect's blueprints, they are the language of innovation used to build things that work and sell. Itâs not just "doing creative stuff" as a hobby; itconnects psychology, engineering, and business. Should I show my parents my drawings right away? Yes, but donât just show them for "praise." If your sketches are still weak, show your motivation to learn. Be honest with them. You may "negotiate" a baby step, like asking them to help you buy some design sketching books or online courses. This is a small investment for them to start with. They will be able to see your aptitude and your discipline without committing to years of investment right away. When they see you working hard toward a tangible goal with sparkling eyes of joy, they will feel comforted. Who knows? They may become your number 1 fan in the near future. What if I fail? My parents will say "I told you so." Maybe. That is why it is wiser to not look for a fight, but for an agreement and support to your project. If they embrace your project and see you gave your absolute best, they wonât say:"I told you so." as long as you give your best. In any career, even medicine there is a risk of failure if you don't have the heart for it. But if you are passionate, you will have the energy to work harder toward success than anyone else and pursue being in the top 10%. Failure only happens if you stop learning. How do I avoid "hitting a wall" or losing motivation? Don't focus on the exhaustion; focus on the purpose. Often, feeling drained comes from doing things without a clear "why." If you remove the concept of a "limit" or a "glass ceiling" from your vocabulary, you become more resilient. Instead of looking for an exit, look for your mission. When you are driven by solving problems and creating value, you don't just survive; you thrive. "@type": "Question", "name": "How do I avoid hitting a wall or losing motivation?", "acceptedAnswer": "@type": "Answer", "text": "Focus on purpose rather than exhaustion. Feeling drained often stems from lack of purpose. By removing the concept of a 'limit' from your vocabulary and focusing on your mission to solve problems, you build true resilience and avoid mental glass ceilings."

Today, let's draw Fashion! We see how to draw a standing pose specifically for fashion design. Ready? Get your Fashion Pack: The 5 Elite Model Poses I start with a reference picture on the left (from Pinterest), and on the right, we are going to rebuild that sketch together. Draw with Reference picture to learn Woman 9-Head Fashion figures with different poses Whether you are into fashion design or just want to improve your character drawing, understanding these woman model figure proportions is a game-changer. So, grab your graphic tablet stylus or your pen, and letâs dive in! The Secret to Fashion Proportions: Exaggerate! Draw your model exaggerating the body curves and elongate the legs for Dynamic Poses If you look at typical fashion sketches, you'll notice something very specific: very long legs. In fashion design, we purposely exaggerate the postures and the limb lengths. Why? Because we want to make the figure look super feminine, dynamic, and most importantly, we need a perfect layout to show off the curves of the clothes. Vary the sketching styles: from Manga to Fashion Study various sketching style from manga to fashion model style While I use a reference picture, I don't copy it 100%. I like to draw with my own style. For example, I often make my models quite athletic, that's just a personal choice, and you can choose to make yours thinner or curvier. As long as the structure is correct, you can really personalize the style. I invite you to explore a variety of sketching style to improve your craft. That way, you'll build up your own fashion "Finger print" in the industry. For example, I did draw with two variations. One has an inspiration from a manga model style, and the other a fashion model style.Which one do you prefer? Copy Other Designers to Create Your Drawing Style There is no shame no copy others when you study. Then, when you learn your basics of sketching, it is a lot easier to create and refine your drawing style that make you unique as a Designer. That should be your goal. You just don't to be another version of someone. You want people to want YOU. On the right: Illustration by Celia Calle who I admire her dynamic and effortless style. "General to Details" Drawing Workflow One rule I always tell my students is: General to Details. Never start with the details first, or your proportions will go wrong. Here is how I build the foundation: The Head: I start with a simple sphere using a quick Loomis technique. I just draw the lips to give a little bit of mood and femininity, but I don't go into details yet. The Spine: This is crucial. I draw the main position of the spine to guide the posture. The Limbs: I draw the arms and legs as very long sticksâstraight lines like bones to give direction. The Articulation: I use ellipses to mark the human skeleton's joints. Quick sketch of the head using Loomis technique Drawing the torso with dynamic pose using the "spine curve" Draw curvy lines for the body for feminity and attractivity Draw the standing figure pose with elongated legs Don't Let Her Float! Draw the Balance Line Draw the "Balance Line" for a strong model posture and avoid floating Have you ever drawn a character that looked awkward, like they were hovering in the air? This is a common mistake regarding balance. To fix this, I always draw a vertical line from the neck down to the ground: called the "Balance Line". This line helps me ensure she feels stable. If you don't check this balance, your model will feel like she is floating. Adding Volume and Anatomy Once the "stick figure" structure is there, I build the flesh and muscle around it.
Draw Contour lines for 3D volume The Rib Cage: Even if the reference photo doesn't show it clearly, I quite like to draw the rib cage. It adds volume and helps visualize the model in 3D. Contour Lines: I add contour lines around the limbs (like bracelets) to help my brain see the form in three dimensions. The Hands: Hands can be scary, right? A quick tip: draw tiny cylinders for the fingers. It helps you visualize the position of each finger much better than trying to draw the outline immediately. Draw fingers with mini cylinders in 3 dimensions A Little Story: Meeting Nancy Riegelman Speaking of studying poses, if you want to dive deeper into this, there is a fantastic book called 9 Heads by Nancy Riegelman. I had the chance to meet her back when I was studying at FIDM (The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) in Los Angeles during a summer session. She is a legendary teacher, and learning these standards really opened up my freedom to draw different postures later on. You can recognize her style worldwide, such on television for Project Runway. I remember at FIDM, every student wanted to join her class, and by the time I registered, it was fully booked! Digital Sketching TIP: The Power of Layers Once we have our body template, we want to dress her up. But here is the trick: Create a new layer! (I am drawing with thew app Sketchbook Pro) Keep your body template on one layer and draw the dress and hair on a separate layer above. This way, if you make a mistake on the dress, you can edit it without altering the body you worked so hard on. Reference picture vs my Fashion Figure Drawing (Athletic style) Draw your Dress Draw the dress using the body as a template. The dress will overlap the body lines. It may look messy. To hide the body lines, don't erase anything. Instead, I create an intermediate layer between the body and the dress line art. On this layer, I paint in white. It covers the body lines so it looks like the dress is opaque, but my original template remains untouched underneath. Fashion drawing with dress paint in white on separate layers TIP: Reuse that same body template to design hundreds of different dresses!Every time you draw a new fashion figure pose, add it in a specific library you can reuse anytime! Your Turn! Don't be a perfectionist when you start. Just try to get the flow correctly, and refine it later. Today I wanna share with you 'How Designers Create Products People Love!'. We'll see also a very quick difference between Artist vs Designer. 1. Think Different We all have a special day per year, our birthday!Today, 29th September is actually my Birthday. : ) We want to be unique individuals, and as creators, we want our work to be recognized. To do so, we have to find a way to differenciate from the crowd. Like what Apple's motto says: "Think Different".Or "Do not follow the mass and think out of the box to innovate"! However, remember that:Yes, we want to be different. But while it is easy to create something different, it takes work to create something relevant. In other words, something that matters to people. While the market used to be covered by boring IBM computer, Apple came up with colorful Machintoch! At that time it was a like "rainbow in the middle of a black and white world". It was super disruptive at that time.Since, Apple keep attracting more and more raving fans. Colorful iMac 2. Don't create "Weird things". It's easy/lazy. To create something different and attract attention, you can create something weird. It is easy or probably lazy. We all saw on Tik-Tok some "weirdo" artists creating weirdo art. That is cool, sometimes. But, do you want to be a "weirdo creator" who creates things no one understands or has no real use? Or do you want to create things that improve people's life? When you create a product, ask yourself: What is the purpose? How can I help people? Don't get me wrong. I am not saying you can't create weirdo things as a Designers. You can if it make sense to the users. Example: Creating swets for Kids. The more weirdo sweets are, the more exciting the experience will probably be! 3. Create both useful and emotional products As a designer, we create things that are both useful and emotionally meaningful to the users. While an artist takes inspiration from his inner world, the designer takes his inspiration from the Users' world. He understands people's needs, then, create for them. I have been a fan of Apple's era of f Steve Jobs and Jony Ive.Their mission of innovative technology at the service of users made Apple successful worldwide. Their creative journey is truly inspiring for any designers. Hear below Jony Ive talking about Apple's products. You can feel the love for its users and products in his voice. As the lead designer, he's genuinely the best marketing representative of Apple. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydkvO6C9pTs 4. Love People to create meaningful products Technology is not the number one source of innovation. People are.No matter how technological, expensive, advanced, a product is, if nobody can relate to it, it is a fail. Remember, technology is a tool. Love people, and you will create products that people will love. Ask yourself How to better serve them. The French Designer Philippe Starck said: Create as you do for your sisters, mothers, or family members. You create for people who matter to you. So you will make quality products that have a positive impact on the world. : ) Philippe Starck - Product Designer Create with intention and love for others. That is how I knew I do not want to be an Artist, but a Designer. How about you? What leads you to become a Designer? Cheers,Chou-Tac PS: I just came from my favorite restaurant called "Tomatito", the fun Tapas bar.It is our favourite tapas place! And their chef knows how to create flavours people love!

Today, I share with you a super easy sketching technique to draw your own products even if you are a beginner! For that, this technique will use the Cylinder as a reference. We will modify it and create variations to create mainly organic forms and designs. Draw random forms with base cylinder How to Draw 100 Forms and Turn Them into Products (Cylinder Base)Draw a Basic CylinderPunch your Cylinder!Stretch your CylinderThink WireframesFrom Abstract Volumes to Tangible ProductsColor Block the ElementsDraw Clean ShadowsCraft your Cylindrical form with a hollowForce applied on cylindrical formsSlanted Ellipses and Various ViewpointsCreation from Abstract ShapesStart Drawing with 3 ellipsesPractice the "C - S - I Curves"Draw Expressive Cute CharactersDraw Heads from any anglesDraw BiggerFill your canvasDo not overthink, draw with your feelingsConclusionPractical Applications and RecommendationsAdditional Recommendations: Draw and Take NotesI invite you to take a pen and a piece of paperto take some notes and sketch with me now.Remember, if you want to acquire your new sketching skills, watching the video is not enough. You have to practice it, and at least take some doodle notes that you can refer to anytime. How to Draw 100 Forms and Turn Them into Products (Cylinder Base) Draw a Basic Cylinder How to draw a cylinder easily (Checking the viewpoint) The first step in creating our new 3D forms and products involves drawing a cylinder.Draw 2 ellipses along the symmetry axis, then connect them with straight lines. The ellipse at the top of the cylinder appears visually smaller than the bottom one due to perspective â an essential factor that influences how we perceive objects' size and shape from different angles. Punch your Cylinder! Drawing a cylinder squeezed on the side You can modify the shape, and proportions of the cylinder by applying pressure - much like molding clay or shaping pottery - which changes its form. Try to visualize your drawing as if it were a real thing that "you can touch, manipulate or mold". For instance, imagine you are punching the Cylinder like a Boxing bag! And it gets squished from all around 360 degrees. Stretch your Cylinder You can also imagine your cylinder getting stretched, pulled out on the side, and become an elongated form. Draw a stretched cylinder with a contour line Experimenting is key here! Try out various heights for your cylinders or apply differing levels of force to see how these factors influence the final product's shape and appearance. Use contour lines marking where expansion has been most significant. Think Wireframes Flat surface with magnetic force and wireframe To further aid visualization when altering volumes, consider wireframes (grid structures) on your cylinder surfaces as guides. Think about how magnets distort metallic tiles; thatâs essentially what youâre doing here but with lines instead! Draw a 3d form with a wireframe Use them whenever you need. They may help you apprehend the volume better to draw a shadow on its surface for example. I actually seldom use them. But I recommend you practice drawing the wireframes until your brain can visualize them (without drawing them). From Abstract Volumes to Tangible Products Make abstract volumes tangible in minutes by adding details like. You can add buttons, screen scratches, logos, plugs, pictograms, rubber grips, foam, serial numbers, grooves, battery slots... There are no rules here; just get creative! Draw realistic products adding details and texture These detail additions not only make your work more interesting but also serve as great practice exercises for honing detail-oriented skills. Do not hesitate to get inspiration from objects around you or use reference pictures of various products and details.
Color Block the Elements To represent an additional piece of your product, you can "color block" it with dark hatching. It will create a nice contrast that brings clarity to your sketch. Draw color blocking fast with hatching. Drawing without "color blocking" Draw abstract form with "color blocking" Draw Clean Shadows Draw shadows on your abstract 3D form When rendering light sources onto these 3D forms (top right works best), remember to include shadows on the product itself, and on the ground too. This enhances their three-dimensional feel making them appear more lifelike! Craft your Cylindrical form with a hollow Cylindrical 3D form with hollow Make sure to draw the inner surface contour lines following the outer contour lines as a reference. Add oblique hatching to emphasize the 2 opposite surfaces. Force applied on cylindrical forms The red arrows show the force applied to your volume. Try to spot them and give a feeling of animation. Force applied on cylindrical forms Slanted Ellipses and Various Viewpoints Practice drawing various angles of ellipses and viewpoints. Try drawing wider ellipses as if you would see your volume from above. Remember to draw the ground shadow with hatchings. SKETCHING TIP: Imagine your forms as "organic matters that are fueled by energy"! Experiment with drawing various viewpoints Creation from Abstract Shapes This creative method reminds the "Happy-Accident technique" where you start from a random and abstract shape to provoke new ideas for products. STEP 1: Draw an abstract form Step 2: Imagine a tangible product Start with abstract shapes transforming them into recognizable forms like a coffee machine â it promotes creativity and challenges your imagination! Your imagination is the only limit. Come up with unexpected ideas or import details you saw in real products or even sci-fi movies! Note: I added the steam of the hot coffee to bring life to the drawing. It takes a few seconds to make, and it suddenly becomes a lot more interesting. That way, you do not only draw a coffee machine, but a little story, a moment of life. Start Drawing with 3 ellipses STEP 1: Draw 3 slanted ellipses STEP 2: Add curves linking the 3 ellipses Draw 3 random ellipses with slanted positions.Connect the 3 ellipses with dynamic lines. You are now able to draw hundreds of combinations and variations of forms! Practice the "C - S - I Curves" Draw C S curves and Straight Lines Basic Drawing Techniques: Practice drawing quickly and roughly to tap into intuition and internalize drawing mechanics. Master curves and straight lines denoted as C, S, and I. With these 3 basic movements, you will cover 90% of your sketching needs. When you face complex forms, simplify them by splitting them into simple curves. Remember: the S-curve is like the shape of a "SNAKE" the C-curve is like the handle of a "Cup" Draw Expressive Cute Characters Emotion in Drawing: Show how your drawings feel - for example, by making them smile or frown! Think of how your abstract form would move and look if it had feelings, and draw the corresponding facial expression. Bring emotion and expression to your abstract volumes This drawing exercise helps you to use forms more effectively to convey emotions. Forms have a subconscious impact on the viewer. Draw Heads from any angles Start drawing some spheres and ellipses. Connect them with dynamic curves. Try to add some tension. STEP 1: Connect ellipse and sphere drawing You do not have to draw advanced or complicated heads. You can practice by adding only the eyes and mouth with a few lines only. STEP 2: Draw heads with the sphere as reference Draw Bigger Larger Forms: Do not draw by turning your wrist.Practice drawing larger forms for more dynamic movements; engage your whole arm not just wrist fostering fluidity in motion! Draw big
Fill your canvas Filling Space: Challenge yourself creatively by filling any empty space on canvas using this approach can lead to unexpected beautiful results! Draw abstract forms and turn them into product design Do not overthink, draw with your feelings Instead of overthinking every strokelet feelings guide you in creating spontaneous diverse sketchesthat reflect personal style taste better than anything preplanned ever could! Sketching a Ketchup Squeezable bottle In the beginning, you may feel pretty dry and uninspired. That's ok. You need to learn to let it go, to give yourself a chance to fail.I know at first, it hurts to see our mistakes on paper. It may paralyze and sometimes lead to give up. Remember, design sketching is about ITERATION. Did you make a mistake? Improve your sketch, and redraw it if necessary. Learn from it, so you can continue to climb the stairs step-by-step. Conclusion Drawing is an art that comes alive when we experiment freely without fear of getting it wrong. After all, mistakes are part learning process, right? So whether you're a seasoned artist or beginner designer don't shy away from trying out new things. With this sketching method, you can come up with hundreds of new forms to help you create new product designs. Never stop exploring! Practical Applications and Recommendations ACTIONABLE STEPS Start drawing a basic cylinder with ellipses along the symmetry axis. Practice basic drawing techniques, focusing on creating quick and rough sketches to tap into your intuition. Master the three basic movements:C curves, S curves, and straight I lines. Use these simple movements to create complex shapes. Experiment with volume deformation using wireframesor grid structures on cylinder surfaces as visual guides. Practice transforming abstract volumes into tangible forms by adding details like stitches, logos, shadows or perforations for a more realistic feel. Understand how forces interplay in drawing such as pushing and pulling â use this knowledge to create dynamic sketches. Regularly practice rendering light sources and shadowing techniques to enhance the 3D effect of your drawings. Experiment with different cylinders: heights, force levels, and expansion ratios when modifying proportions of your drawings - mark the widest point of expansion for reference. Try filling any empty space on the canvas creatively during your practice sessions to challenge yourself further. Use "overlaying shapes technique" often while sketching; start with a simple shape then refine it by adding small specific details. Use drawing as a brainstorming tool â let it translate into various imaginative designs that you can explore further. Practice giving individual expressions to characters in order to give them distinct personalities using shading and shaping techniques. Finally, make sure you enjoy the process - creativity is key! THANK YOU Draw organic forms with Cylinder base Additional Recommendations: Sign up for the free Design Starter Kit being offered here, which provides resources on your first steps at sketching & perspective Always remember that skill in drawing comes from repetition, experimentation & personal exploration so keep practicing regularly!
âLearn How to Learnâ Drawing with no Experience Thatâs great! You decided to start learning how to draw. But you wonder how to draw anything you ever wanted? Naturally, you copy designers or artists you like, but it is not easy to make good drawings as a beginner. An unfair amount of your drawings may end up in the paper bin. You wish you could progress better, but you just do not know how.And thatâs ok. To succeed, I would like you to make a RESET of your mind, So we can start with a solid base by âLearning how [âŚ]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJf93ZSSxuk 4 Steps to Master Drawing Skills: A Beginnerâs Guide to Learn How to Learn "Learn How to Learn" Drawing with no Experience That's great! You decided to start learning how to draw. But you wonder how to draw anything you ever wanted? Naturally, you copy designers or artists you like, but it is not easy to make good drawings as a beginner. An unfair amount of your drawings may end up in the paper bin. You wish you could progress better, but you just do not know how.And that's ok. To succeed, I would like you to make a RESET of your mind, So we can start with a solid base by "Learning how to learn drawing" following my 4-step method. "Bad learning habit" as a kidReset your Mindset (to better learn)The "DRAW IT 4 TIMES" TECHNIQUEAdopt the resilience of a baby!Avoid Copying "What You See": Draw with StrategyThe "Draw it 4 Times method"1) Understanding through analysis:2) Assimilate your drawing strategy3) Mastering Sketching4) Creating your unique style"Draw it 4 Time" drawing demoBONUS Exercise: Draw with Loose linesSUM-UP: 17 ACTIONABLE STEPS "Bad learning habit" as a kid Bored student learning his lesson doodling on his notebook When you were a pupil,You had to study various subjects like: - History, Geography, Math, Grammar, and so on at school. Most of the time, you had to memorize the lessons and pass the tests. However... how did you proceed to learn? Did you also like me, learn by repeating your lessons over and over? And still find this technique inefficient? Did your teachers ever teach you how to better memorize or acquire efficiently the knowledge? Even though you may have good marks, how much do you remember of all the knowledge you studied today? Uninspired at school, I often end up doodling in my notebooks though. And you?Did you also doodle in class? Reset your Mindset (to better learn) I believe the way we learn at our academic school does not work. This is why I created my own proven methods to "learn drawing with efficiency" using a different method. I developed my own learning method of sketching during my Design School and Professional life, which anyone can use from the start. With today's video about "Learn how to learn drawing with no experience", I want to help beginner designers learn and improve their skills in a smart and fun way. I want to teach you techniques you can acquire and remember and use for a lifetime to draw anything you wish. If you think you have always been bad at drawing, get ready to reset your mindset. Artist woman is meditating The "DRAW IT 4 TIMES" TECHNIQUE I aim to demystify the learning process by making it easy to learn drawing. You get an effective learning strategy using the "DRAW IT 4 TIMES" technique that fosters growth while ensuring the journey remains fun! Adopt the resilience of a baby! Drawing parallels with a baby's learning process may seem odd but it offers valuable lessons - perseverance and resilience. Babies don't give up when they stumble; they rise again until walking becomes second nature to them. They are so resilient, that no babies gave up trying to walk. Baby never give up learning how to walk Similarly, beginners should embrace humility and understand that immediate success in drawing is unrealistic. It's okay to fail. Keep up and try again! So many beginners give up at their first bad drawing, convinced they will be BAD at drawing forever. YOU ARE NOT BAD AT DRAWINGThe first step towards mastering drawing is adopting the right mindset. It is not because your first sketches are bad, that you are bad at drawing. It is just that nobody taught you before. Avoid Copying "What You See": Draw with Strategy Beginners often copy a finished drawing without knowing the steps involved to get there - even though these sketching techniques are often simpler than you think. In reality, copying
isnât equivalent to comprehending; these are distinct skills with different impacts on your design and artistic development. While striving for perfection may seem like an ideal goal, it can limit creativity and hinder idea generation. Instead, focus on understanding the essence of your subject matter rather than mechanically reproducing it. Another practical tip is to draw bigger sketches which help in better focusing on basic movements and gestures further refining your skills. Draw with StrategyA common pitfall most novices fall into is trying to replicate professional artwork without understanding its underlying fundamentals or the drawing processes involved. The "Draw it 4 Times method" "Learning how to learn" is essential to efficient skill acquisition in any field including drawing. It involves breaking down complex tasks into manageable parts which can then be practiced individually before integrating them together. In terms of practical application, below are these four drawing stages: 1) Understanding through analysis: At this stage focus on practicing without worrying about producing high-quality sketches.Your goal here is to analyze, and identify the steps you need to perform to draw your subject. When you draw something new, pick up the drawing techniques you learned to set a sketching strategy. Draw them as "Doodle visual notes". Think of the drawing fundamentals as a Big toolbox.Whether you are a beginner or a professional sketcher, this preparation step will be a tremendous help. Step 1 Understand the drawing steps 2) Assimilate your drawing strategy Repeatedly practice various techniques till you become comfortable drawing your product. Since the analysis stage is acquired, drawing your product becomes a lot easier now. You start refining the proportions, and deliver neater sketches.Make sure to draw bigger. Step 2 Assimilate the knowledge to practice with neat sketches 3) Mastering Sketching Delve deeper into more advanced concepts like 3D drawings, line weights, ground shadow etc., once basic techniques are mastered. You may even skip some steps, such as drawing the symmetry axis. Your drawings gain clarity by omitting drawing selective construction lines. As for now, you can visualize these imaginary lines in your mind. Your drawing is neat and shows quality lines. Step 3 Master drawing with clarity 4) Creating your unique style After gaining proficiency in fundamental techniques explore personal stylistic preferences and develop your individual artistic voice as a Designer. Make your imperfections beautiful! Step 4 Break the rules of drawing to draw freestyle "Draw it 4 Time" drawing demo I add below an application of the "Draw it 4 Time" technique.I took the USB HUB in front of me, and draw it. :) Usb hub Baseus reference picture Drawing usb hub baseus in 4 steps Build resilienceEmbracing mistakes as part of the learning curve helps build resilience against setbacks while adding fluidity and spontaneity in artworks making each piece distinctly yours. BONUS Exercise: Draw with Loose lines Sketch random shapes and overlay them repeatedly to foster a relaxed drawing style. Drawing with loose line help you fight against Perfectionism, and help you to better engage in a new drawing with enthusiasm instead of fear. Draw loose and imperfect sketching exercise For those eager beginners wanting more guidance check out the Designer Starter Kit aimed at helping novices grasp perspective drawing effectively. Claim your FREE copy of The DesignerStarter Kit SUM-UP: 17 ACTIONABLE STEPS What to remember to "Learn better how to learn drawing": Begin your drawing journey with humility and perseverance, understanding that immediate success is not a guarantee. Adopt a mindset similar to a baby learning new skills â continue without giving up despite challenges. Learn the fundamentals of drawing
instead of just copying other works; understand what makes each piece unique and try to apply these learnings in your own work. Avoid overconfidence and trying to imitate professionals until you've grasped the basics of drawing. Follow the four stages to learn drawing: Understand, Assimilate, Master, Freestyle! Practice basic movements frequently and draw larger sketches for better focus on details. Focus more on understanding the object you're drawing rather than mechanically reproducing it. Embrace mistakes as they are part of growth; use them as opportunities to refine your skills further. Try freehand or freestyle drawings to express yourself creatively even if they end up imperfect. Practice exercises like random shape drawings followed by repeating overlays to promote a relaxed drawing style. Avoid being overly perfectionist; allow room for fun, imperfection which can fuel creativity process further. When attempting new objects always draw multiple times till you feel comfortable with all aspects & details about it - remember initial attempts are meant for understanding so don't worry about them being clumsy or imperfect. Prepare well before sketching anything- know basic techniques well enough before proceeding further Focus on efficiency & speed while sketching especially in collaborative settings where idea generation needs quick modifications & iterations based on feedbacks received Develop your own individual style instead of just copying others' works - customization is what makes each artwork unique Remember, progress and fun should be the main goals while learning sketching techniques; don't stress over imperfections or slow pace initially.

Make sure to watch the video tutorial by taking visual notes. That will help you to remember the drawing techniques forever. 1. Master the basic movements of drawing Before starting, it's great to warm up your hands by practicing the basic movements. It is a great way to improve your drawing skills, on a sketching daily basis, Focus on drawing circles and ellipses as these are foundational to more complex forms. Master the basic movements of drawing: Circle and Ellipse shapes 2. Go from a 2D circle to 3D sphere using ellipses Try transitioning a 2D circle or ellipse into a 3D shape by drawing two perpendicular ellipses within the initial form. This is a crucial step in understanding volume and depth in your sketches. Go from a 2D circle to a 3D sphere using ellipses 3. Draw the sections with oblique hatching Incorporate hatching into your sketching routine to indicate surfaces. This will indicate your section. IMPORTANT: Avoid trying to draw a half-watermelon directly. Imagine the whole sphere as a watermelon, then cut in half! Draw a sphere section with hatching - like Fruit Ninja 4. Draw contour lines to show volumes Utilize 'Contour lines' when you're sketching objects for better comprehension of their volume. This Design sketching technique will help you visualize the object's dimensions accurately. Draw contour lines on your sphere 5. Think of sketching as "Sculpting" Approach sketching like sculpting.Start with complete basic 3D forms (spheres, cubes, ellipses, cones) then gradually cut them according to the design you want to create. We use here a subtraction approach. Draw like sculpting by using subtraction 6. Experiment with different angles of "cut" Experiment with different angles and sizes of cuts while sketching an object from various perspectives. That drawing practice enhances your spatial understanding skills. Draw different angles of section 7. Imagine different objects you want to cut! Imagine different products, food... within each sketch (it could be a coconut, an orange, or a bowling bowl...). This practice aids in developing creativity and attention to detail. Draw coconut and orange cut in half 8. Use simple rules of geometry For capturing complex shapes effectively, learn geometric construction techniques that provide structure and accuracy to your designs. Product design sketching becomes much easier than you think. It is all about a succession of simple techniques that create complex drawings. Draw section on sphere 9. Block a 30-minute session to practice Commit yourself to at least 30 minutes of daily practice for steady progress in design sketching skills over time.
Turn on some Lo-Fi music. Keep your phone or any distraction away. Enjoy practicing drawing and experimenting like a Geek in his laboratory. :) Practice drawing sections for 30 minutes 10.
