Congratulations, you have unlocked: The Beat ramble!
So. In this au, her entire life is changed to parallel Eve and her themes better, so it doesn't quite go the same way, but she still gets run over, yes.
Little Beatrice, after signing up for and completely forgetting about the corn detasseling job, got a knock on the door for her house in the middle of summer. She didn't answer it, of course, but her sister did, as she always did when mom was out, so Beat just staid in her room. There was talking, at first. Then yelling. Something about money and paying back the days of work. Beat was young, sure, but she knew they wouldn't be able to bank all of that. They were already struggling as is. That's why she wanted the job at first, after all. Then there were thuds, a scuffle, screams and bangs of bodies against walls. And then there was silence. Footsteps, quick, and a closed door. She waited until she could not hear anyone until she left her room. And by then, it was too late.
The doctors said it was a head injury. That she fell and hit just the wrong spot at just enough force. They assured her mom that it was a painless death. No criminal charges were pressed, as there was no proof of foul play. Just an unfortunate accident. But Beat knew. She knew it was her fault. She knew the strangers were there for her. That if she'd just not signed up, just gone to her job, just opened the door, just left her damn room when she could hear that things were going badly, then maybe. Just maybe. She wouldn't be gone.
But time never waits for those who mourn. And without her sister around to work, and her mother's lung cancer only getting worse and worse, money was running thin again. She tried what she could, getting small part time jobs in whatever grimy corner store would take her, or mowing the lawns in the nice side of town, or playing music by the park with a donation box, but there's only so much a twelve year old can do to financially support her family. And her mother showed no signs of getting better. Either they get into debt, sell the house, or they can't support her treatment.
And so, Beat's mother makes a decision. Between dying slowly and leaving her child with crippling debt for the rest of her life, or dying quickly but still keeping what little they had left, she chose the latter.
And Beat couldn't take it.
She could find a way, pawn off some of her old toys, tutor some rich kids, maybe take more than just a candy bar from the local store once they're closed, maybe, she just needs to find a way-
And in the middle of the road that she crossed without looking,
There was light.
Blinding.
Consuming.
And then.
Beat wakes up, in a field of green, under the shade of a tree with pale leaves. In the distance, a woman with blue hair stands among the grass.
Hello UNBEATABLE community. I come to you with a good ol' dose of Angst Au Material.
May I introduce you to my terrible beautiful creation:
The THINK OF THE CHILDREN AU.
[Warning for under the cut: UNBEATABLE spoilers, discussion of child death, mild blood, and general angst.]
It had been a tough decision, and one the public took to not greatly. Eve and Grace were still quite young after all, and the idea of abandoning their stardom to take care of their kid made many a fan mourn or seethe. Quietly, even Rest had conflicting emotions about being the only of the three that was not a member of their happy little family. Not that she would ever admit to that, of course.
And so came the day of their final show. The crowd roaring, emotions bubbling further, and further, and further. Eve, upon the stage, leans down to see little Quaver on the front row. And the emotions bubble, and bubble, until. There is Nothing.
And to Nothing comes a bang.
Grace was caught in the aftermath, when the Nothing began to tear into the crowd. He'd jumped in when he saw Quaver fall. And Eve... Eve survived. She couldn't save her. She didn't save her. She hesitated. How could she have hesitated. Once she came to her senses, Rest was already dragging her away. From her child. From her husband. From the crown of strangers, all gone. From the Nothing.
And so was the day that Silence came to be.
(Seven years later, a young Beat wanders around town, having convinced a reluctant Eve to show her where her band used to tour. All over are many billboards in this terrible cop blue shade, all saying the same thing, almost like a mantra.)
("Think of the children! Keep music out, keep them safe.")
