I also researched poster ideas and found that the ones I was most drawn to were the ones with a singular image and simple background. This is because your attention is all drawn to the singular image, therefore making it more impactful. Therefore, to make my poster work from 3 metres away as specified in the brief I aim to have one sole image for the viewer to focus on in order to make it stand out and catch people’s eyes.

When researching inspiration for how to present my booklet I came across these two illustrated booklets by the artists above. With both I really liked their use of ‘reflection’ in some sense. With the first image, although it is the two different covers, I felt like it could be a really effective double spread due to the use of mirroring and contrast in colour. With the second booklet example, it is not exact mirroring, but I find the similarities in the two cats presented is what makes it work and makes the two different images of the cats work as a full piece. I also like the use of smaller illustrations of the same nature surrounding the cats as in my opinion it marries the two pages together.
I want to be able to do the same with my booklet and make the double spread work as a whole image as well as two separate images and I feel like mirroring could be an effective way of achieving this.
As well as considering the contents of my booklet and poster I have been looking at the layout and how it all works together. To see how the finished booklet will be laid out like I made a simple mock up.
Mr Whiskers is also key to The Weird Girl's character as he is her companion and she is never seen without him. Therefore I also want to include him in the booklet. I drew from the gif above and included text to begin thinking about combining text and imagery for my final outcome. I drew this piece in white pencil on black card and enjoyed drawing in reverse (making up the piece through only colouring the highlighted parts and leaving out the shadow).

I want to include runes within my piece due to The Weird Girl's connection with predicting the future and her mystical nature. I feel like including runes in my work will help indicate her personality and interest in spirituality.
I worked on the previous drawing digitally and found I was able to give it a more creepy and eerie feel. I was also able to make it more bold and eye-catching than my previous biro sketch.
I thought a good beginning place would be to dissect what where the prominent features that my character possesses. For my final poster/booklet I want to do the Weird Girl in my own style and to do this I need to know what her most prominent features are. In my opinion her most important features that make her character recognisable are her: -large eyes -short fringe -lack of eyebrows -heart shaped face
Introduction to The Weird Girl:
-She is aged around 10-12 -She is a self proclaimed psychic -She has a pet cat called Mr Whiskers who she shares unblinking eyes with Inspirations: -The girl who just stares by Tim Burton -She resembles a child version of Kim Bogg from Edward Scissorhands Quotes: -'If Mr Whiskers dreams about you, it means something big is going to happen.' -'One day you'll dream about me won't you kitty?' -'Mr Whiskers had a dream about you last night.'
I decided I wanted to focus on The Weird Girl for my Summer Project. Although I liked the playfullness of the trick or treaters, the gambling imagery surrounding Oogie Boogie and the story behind Coraline I decided to focus on the Weird Girl. I chose her because of the mystery surrounding her and how I could manipulate this to portay however I wanted. Although, in saying that she still has key features that make her recognisable. With this chatacter in particular I feel there is more than just appearance that makes her identity so unique.

Some quick sketches of a few of Tim Burton’s characters made while watching the films. I wanted to sketch each of them while watching the films they were included in to try and get a sense of their character into the sketch.
(Own art)
All of Tim Burtons characters are very striking because he places emphasis on certain features to enhance them e.g. Eyes, noses, stick thin bodies Due to his style you get a true feeling for his characters even without hearing or seeing them move and with a limited colour palette.
Summer Project: Beginnings
When considering what character to focus on I wanted to make sure I picked a character with a big personality. Because I am only able to use black and white I wanted to pick a character that I could portray without using colour and would still be bold/striking. I started looking into Tim Burtons characters as the majority of his work is very monochromatic but you still get a sense of character through the way they carry themselves and their features.
