Okay, no. Look at his face in the first gif. You can see how much that line Bunny says hurts him. You can see the sadness and the desperation on his face clearly. He obviously has thought about this many times and has heard this opinion about him a lot. You can see that he’s tired of hear it. And then, when he takes a step back, Jack FORCEFULLY pulls on a smirk and pretends to be okay, making a snappy comeback.

He’s about to snap back, but he doesn’t believe it.

Not really.

He’s just snapping back a comment because that’s what is expected of him. And he’s not going to show these people his pain over what was just said.

Because he doesn’t trust them.

And he won’t make himself vulnerable to them.

(Well, except Sandy. Sandy is the exception. I also think, that Jack would have still said no to Pitch because of what happened to Sandy, but it would have been a far more broken, far more reluctant, no. Because he would be giving up everything in that moment because he wouldn’t, couldn’t, work with someone who killed his one true friend besides the Wind. And he would have been far more scared for Pitch and probably would have gotten attacked by the Nightmares at the end as well…you know, if Pitch hadn’t crossed the line with everything covered in fear, because that goes against Jack. That was kind-of where he messed up.

Because he doesn’t trust them.

(Well, except Sandy. Sandy is the exception. 

He couldn’t remember the return trip to Jack’s place. Not for lack of sobriety, no, he had made a point not to drink too much…but he was exhausted. Though they never officially called it a date, it had still been quite the evening, and movies had sounded so good, too.   It was just too bad Hiccup fell asleep halfway through.
