Baka-no-jutsu

Thank you for the request :) This was a little tricky because Neji’s death was near the end of the war, so lets pretend that the war lasted for days (not just two) and he died early on, haha. 

Last brawl, Neji

No one could get close to him. No one could breach his barrier. Every attack was thwarted and shuriken deflected as he swirled around. He had every advantage with his cursed eyes, undead body, and agile speed. He was unstoppable. 

Ninjas were rendered immobilized by the touch of his hand, but that was the preferred fate. Others met a swift end by a quick jab to their heart. Unknowledgeable of his skill, shinobi were left ill-equipped in facing one of the Hyuga’s finest and Kabuto was lucky to get his hands on him. 

Your heart was beating rapidly inside your chest. Panic was gripping you as you observed shinobi being torn down at the hands of your deceased lover. He had died the day before in battle. His loss was still fresh to you and there was no time in war to comprehend the pain. Tears were streaming down your face, your jaw was locked, and your body was shaking with indescribable fear and distress. You felt like you couldn’t move, as if someone had gripped your heart and tore it from your being. How could you fight someone you just lost? How could you fight someone you loved? Especially how could you fight him? The genius of the Hyuga, Neji.

There was a quiet moment. Shinobi had stopped raining down on him in attacks. They all laid lifeless surrounding him. He had stopped spinning and his back was to you. 

You were the only one left alive in the vicinity, hiding up in the trees, having watched the battle unfold. Your body was too tense to move. 

“I know you’re there.” His smooth voice called and immediately his sharp lavender eyes turned towards you. 

You shouldn’t have been surprised since you knew about his astounding vision yet you still were startled. 

“Y/N.” And suddenly your lover darted for you. 

A gasp fell from your lips, but your reflexes had saved you as you leaped back from the attack. You gained more distance from Neji, putting more trees between you two. Your heart was reeling inside your chest. The panic was still there. You knew you couldn’t defeat him, but you were not going to run away. You were a shinobi. You did not have a spirit of fear. 

Neji’s undead eyes followed your movement. His hands poised to attack with gentle fist. He kept still, studying your movement. His face was seemingly devoid of emotion. 

You had landed away from him, but you were ready to spring again. Your movements being less agile and graceful as they typically were. Your nerves were shaky. 

“Run,” that was the only warning he gave you before he was on the offensive again. 

You were swift. You did not take the warning for granted and he relentlessly pursued you. You kept your eyes on him, never letting your guard down. You knew the moment you did would be game over. You knew he did not have control of his limbs and by the one brief word of warning, you knew he also wasn’t able to retreat but he was still there deep inside. 

Your emotions would have to wait because you needed to put effort into your brain to find a way to survive. With new resolve, your defenses became more fluent. You looked for an escape, not to retreat but to turn the tables. You were fast and you knew of Neji’s one weakness in his vision. You would have to maneuver away from him until you got the opportunity to strike. The only downside is you could possibly tire out before him. 

With a calm mind, you kept away from his hands and even gained ground to place paper bombs on the trees you passed to slow him down. You didn’t want to get close to him and have him block your chakra. You made a hand sign igniting the paper bombs. 

The explosion rocked the landscape and the trees surrounding the bombs fell heavily. The smoke made you lose sight of Neji, but you hoped the diversion gave you a moment to get behind him. 

When the area cleared, Neji’s body was nowhere to be found. Hastily, you scanned your surroundings and a tingling in your gut warned you a fraction before you were struck in the shoulder. You cried out and fell out of the tree. You hit the ground roughly, and sat up in a defensive crouch, gripping your useless shoulder.  

Neji landed in front of you. His face was cold. 

“Y/N… I can’t… please,” he pleaded helpless through a body that was no longer his. 

“Neji, it’s okay. I know this isn’t your will. I love you,” you spoke as you pulled a kunai from your pouch. 

“Stop me… please,” Neji begged but his body crouched into gentle fist formation. 

You felt a tear slip from your eye as you nodded your head. You knew you were only going to be able to use taijutsu now. “I’ll try,” you muttered with all the courage you could muster. 

Neji lunged at you. Your kunai cutting through his hands at his strikes. His wounds healed only moments later. He knocked the kunai from your hand and kicked you back. You fell to the floor. You were losing breath. All you had been doing was running from him. 

You got up again and attacked. This behavior repeated a few more times. You felt you were on your last legs but you lasted longer than any of Neji’s other opponents. As you were looking upon Neji’s face, you could see there was a struggle going on. An inner battle. He was fighting for control. 

You smiled despite your circumstance as you got up yet again. Your body was bruised and sore. You were huffing for breath. Not one of his hairs was out of place. He was perfect. His dark lavender eyes were the only thing reminding you that he was dead. The rest of his body was left unblemished. Your brain flashing back in that moment to all the soft moments you two shared together when he was alive. 

Your heart ached worse than your body did now. 

“I’m sorry,” he spoke.

Tonight, a firework display will be held to celebrate Lady Tsunade’s inauguration as the 5th Hokage. After going through vulnerable and unstable days after Orochimaru’s attack and the 3rd Hokage’s death, the villagers of Konoha finally come together to witness a new beginning under a new leader. A new light finally emerged from the brim of sadness, once again giving everyone hope towards a bright future for Konoha.

It was the talk of the village for the past few days, everybody was deciding what kimono to wear and who to invite. As you would be working late that night, you agreed to meet up with your friends at the firework display after you’re done with everything.

You could hear the distant laughter and cheeriness while you were walking towards the venue. You smiled to yourself, happy that the depressing days after the attack is over and that the villagers are back on their feet. You had a purple kimono on with your hair down and a white flower clipping as an accessory. You were quite in a rush, so you didn’t really put that much thought into it.

After talking with your friends for a while, you felt uncomfortable being a 5th wheel as it turned out that they each brought partners. Excusing yourself, you searched through the crowd for a certain shinobi with a distinct white hair. You weren’t sure if he attended or not as he’s not that much of a people person. But you were relieved when you saw him near one of the food stands with none other than Guy-sensei.

“Hi,” you said as you gently tapped his shoulder. He was wearing a blue kimono with his mask, as always, still on.

“Hey,” he replied as he put down his Icha-Icha tactics. “Eh? didn’t see you earlier.”

“Yeah, I just arrived a few minutes ago, had to work late for an impor- shit,” you said abruptly. Panicking, you hastily went behind Kakashi’s back to hide yourself when you saw the two guys who asked you out yesterday.

“What happened?”

“I’ll explain to you later, help me hide please,” you said quietly. Seeing how pathetic your hiding strategy is, Kakashi pushed you softly into an empty alley nearby and positioned himself dangerously close to you. He put his right hand on the wall next to you as an attempt to hide your face from whoever you were trying to hide from. Although it was considerably effective, it wasn’t good for your heart, afraid Kakashi could hear its loud beating. Leaning close he said, “This way people wouldn’t even try to approach.”

You could only nod, looking down to gather your thoughts as you felt your cheeks heating up. Damn this copy ninja! Does he realize the things he could do to you? You have the hots for him and has been desperately trying to keep it oblivious, but right now, you weren’t sure if you could keep your feelings in check from how close you two were.

“Well, if this isn’t convenient,” you muttered under your breath. Not wanting to waste this chance by looking away, you looked up to see Kakashi giving you a smile. “Well, if you don’t tell me who you’re hiding from, we would stay like this until tomorrow morning,” he added, “Not that I have any problems with that.”

Embarrassed, you pushed Kakashi and stomped away, “They’re gone already.” You then looked back at him who looked nonchalant about the entire thing, much like his usual self, walking behind you. To you, it seemed like he was acting indifferent, but you failed to notice that Kakashi was a nervous wreck. Even when his fingertips would brush your skin subtly, it would send shivers down his body. He was giving it his all to hold himself back and not get caught up in the moment.

How could he not? You were a famous kunoichi known for your intelligence and beauty. Despite being younger than him by a few years, he admired your maturity and tendency to remain cool-headed at all times. It’s not rare that he overhears his comrades complimenting you. You were a truly skilled and hardworking shinobi who earned everybody’s respect.

“Thanks,” you said quickly.

“Couldn’t hear you,” he teased.

“I hate you,” you replied while turning away. Kakashi was your senior in ANBU and because of your great chemistry and teamwork, you two were often sent together on missions, therefore explaining your close relationship. He was always there to give you advice and comfort you whenever you felt homesick during long missions.

It wasn’t until Kakashi was discharged from ANBU that you felt his great impact on your life. You were in denial for quite some time, until you came to the conclusion that the reason you were constantly worrying and missing him was not because you were simply his friend, no. It was a feeling much stronger than that.

“Is this the thank you I get for saving you?”

You swiftly grabbed his hand and took him to the rooftop across the one where Guy and his team were sitting. This was the best place to see the fireworks and it also meant less chance to encounter the two guys you saw before.

“I saw the two guys that asked me out, they also asked me to go to the firework display with them.”

“And you rejected them?”

“Yeah, I said I couldn’t go tonight,” she shrugged, “I mean, I’d rather go with someone else.”

“Then why aren’t you with this guy right now?”

That question caught you off guard. “Well, he’s definitely here right now,” you said awkwardly, “But I wasn’t brave enough to ask him to go with me. Besides, I wasn’t sure if watching firework is his thing,” you said, letting out a laugh. Knowing him, you were sure he’d rather stay at home to read his books. You made a mental note to thank Guy for dragging him here.

“Oh.”

“You’re not going to press me further about who that person is?”

“No,” he shrugged.

“You’re no fun,” you said jokingly, although it was an attempt to persuade him to ask you more questions. 

He laughed and said, “Okay then, who’s the lucky guy?”

“Well there’s no fun in it if you directly ask me who he is, you have to guess.”

“Then, what’s this person like?”

“Um, let me think,” you said as you carefully thought about him, “He may seem very nonchalant at first, but deep down he’s someone who cares a lot for his comrades.”

“Hm, that wouldn’t narrow the options by a lot. How does he look like?”

“He has a distinct hair, tall…”

“Why do you like him?”

“I feel safest around him. He’s a truly wonderful person, I wish I had the guts to tell him that. I feel like he doubts himself a lot. He needs to know that a lot of people are grateful for him, including me. I’ve never liked anyone else the same way I like him.”

“As your senior, I say you should just straight-up tell him about how you feel,” he gave you a smile and a thumbs-up to encourage you. 

“Ah, so she has a special someone. I mean, it’s no surprise right? Someone like her couldn’t possibly be single forever. I guess I was too late, huh?” thought Kakashi. 

"Well, I don’t know if he feels the same way…” you said, shifting awkwardly in your seat. 

“But there’s no telling unless you tell him right?”

“Yeah, I guess…”

To hell with pride.

"I like you, Kakashi.”

“Wait, I mean you should tell him that, not me.”

“Huh? This whole time I was talking about you, damn it.”

“Uh? So you?” he looked at you, surprised. You didn’t know what made him so surprised though, wasn’t that obvious hints? Who else has distinct hair in Konoha? Okay, aside from Guy and a few other people… Yeah, maybe you should’ve just said ‘white hair’ but it would be like giving it away.

“Yeah, whatever you’re trying to say. If you’re going to reject me, at least wait until the firework’s over so you don’t ruin it.”

It was silent for a while and all you wanted to do was throw yourself to the river. Just kidding. You should’ve stayed home. But then again, there’s no better time than right now. It’s either now or never. You had to get the weight off your chest and you’ve prepared for the worst possible outcome for years. “You know what, I’m sorry. I know it’s ridiculous for me to like you when you have so many other-”

“I like you too, Y/N.”

“Girls fawning over-” you froze for a moment and looked at him in disbelief, “Wait, did you just?”

“Come,” he said as he stood up and gave her his hand, “I know a place where you can see the fireworks much better.” It was one of your favorite Kakashi smiles, the one where you couldn’t see his eyes. Despite not being able to see the rest of his face, this was enough to put the butterflies in her stomach.

It was a place near the river, far from the busy crowd. The water moves calmly and the fireworks could be seen clearly. “You know, I was serious when I said those things. I really see you as a wonderful person.”

“Yeah, I know. I’m a very lucky guy.”

“But don’t get too full of yourself,” you said jokingly, landing a weak punch on his arm.

You looked at Kakashi, who was laughing wholeheartedly, in awe. This was truly a sight to remember. Feeling entirely grateful, you gave him a shy hug, hiding your face on his kimono. Y/N who was usually a confident, collected person, became a mess whenever he’s around. Only he’s able to do that. 

Kakashi ran his fingers through your hair soothingly and rested his head on top of yours. Despite the loud cracks of the fireworks, you could subtly hear Kakashi’s soft voice saying, “Thank you, Y/N.”

“Soft.” you mumble, moving your fingers to grasp at his strands of white locks. You could feel Kakashi shift his hold around your waist as he let out a hum. You had your arms around his neck and your chin rested on top of his fluffy mane. Letting your head drop to the pillow, you say again, “Your hair is really soft, captain.”

The white-haired nin cuddled you tighter, “You’re also a captain, y/n.” He says, breath hitting your bare collar, You ignored him, choosing to continue playing with his hair.

“Can’t fall asleep too?”

“Mhm.”

You closed your eyes and tried to get comfortable. The mission that week was particularly grueling. Both your teams were paired up to infiltrate a Kumogakure base, some things went wrong but the objective was achieved and the hokage, satisfied. It didn’t matter that you bathed the base in blood or that you had lost a teammate, this was expected in the ANBU.

So you can’t help but wonder if perhaps there had been a mistake.

ANBU members aren’t chosen based on skill alone, character and personality are heavily scrutinized before being handpicked by the hokage himself. You undoubtedly had the skill, your special ninjutsu could kill silently, easily, and within seconds. But character and personality? No. You were much too soft.

When Kakashi’s S/O hasn’t returned from a mission…

It was supposed to be a month tops. Just a month on a solo S-Rank mission. That’s four weeks. 30 days. S/O always came back because she was just that good. She was just that smart. Kakashi always believed in her and had the utmost faith in her abilities. So why hadn’t she come back yet?

Two months had passed and each day Kakashi woke up in a bed that was just too spacious and felt devastatingly empty. Anxiety crept up through his spine in malicious chills each night and jolted him awake at ungodly hours.

“Let me find her,” Kakashi pleaded to the Godaime, Tsunade. “It’s been too long. I can go alone. Just let me find her.”

“Kakashi,” Tsunade sighed. “It’s been weeks since she should have come back. I’ve already sent out multiple ANBU search parties for her, but she’s wiped clear off the grid. I’m sorry, but…”

“No,” Kakashi interjected. The man bowed deeply to his superior. “Forgive me, Tsunade-sama. I should know my place better.”

Shizune held her pig, Tonton, close to her chest as she watched her colleague walk out of the room leaving behind a heavy atmosphere. It was the first she and her peers had seen Kakashi finally be at peace with someone. He was finally happy and ready to settle with a woman he truly loved. No one could think of anyone who deserved something to so simple more than Kakashi who had been through too much in his years in this cruel world.

“Dont worry,” she told him. “ I’ll be back in a month.” S/O placed a chaste kiss on Kakashi’s bare lips and cheek before she walked out the door.

There was something different in the tone of her voice though, but he was a fool and didn’t catch it. Kakashi didn’t hear the slight hesitation in her voice and how overly optimistic she was being. He should have known better.

The kisses she left burned Kakashi’s skin and felt unbearably hot whenever he thought about his final moment with her. She was everything to him and it felt as though their relationship had only begun.

For years, she chased him around. He always said no. She had incessantly, annoyingly, and half-jokingly asked him to marry her even as kids. Even when he had turned into a cold, distant killer in his ANBU days, S/O greeted him with exuberance and the audacity to ask him out on “dates” which he begrudgingly would agree to just to make her shut up. S/O was the reason he had a small bit of the adolescent experience.

“You’re so slow, Kakashi!” S/O whined as she pulled on his arm.

“I don’t know about this, S/O,” Kakashi trailed. They were barely legal. In fact, S/O still had a month before she turned of age. “You’re not twenty yet and trying to get into a bar.”

“You think they’ll actually ask?” she asked offendedly. “I put on makeup and everything! Besides, this isn’t my first time! I promise we won’t get caught, okay?”

“One day, all these thing are going to catch up with you,” Kakashi sighed but followed her.

Had all her mischief finally caught up to her? Had her schemes gone too far this time? Those were innocent things though. Then again even on missions, she was clever and made risky moves. He knew that. Did she mess up? Why didn’t he ask to go with her? Tsunade would have said no. He should have insisted though. Why didn’t he notice something was off?

Rarely did Kakashi have outbursts, but when he did, Kakashi took it to the training grounds. Sharp chirping and zipping sounds erupted with lighting that balled up in the palm of his hand. Kakashi struck his infamous jutsu through straw dummies. Dizzy from the overwhelming emotions that was bubbling inside him, Kakashi fell to his knees.

He just wanted her back…To go back to the day she impulsively kissed him for the first time.

“S/O, you can’t just walk away from this,” Kakashi scolded. “We might be back in one piece this time, but a move like that can seriously jeopardize the team.”

“But thanks to me we’re home two days early,” S/O debated. “No one was scratched.”

“It was unprecedented and unauthorized by your captain,” Kakashi furthered. “You should have at least talked to me.”

“You were going to say no anyways because you’re such a genius!”

“Drop the attitude.”

“Is that an order, captain?” She spat the last word with bitterness and moved uncomfortably close to him.

Kakashi remained unfazed. “If it were, would you-” Kakashi’s words were cut off by a pair of soft lips against his masked ones. She held it there for a few moments and finally pulled away with a stubborn smile on her face.

“Would I finally listen?” she asked smugly. “Never.”

These memories constantly plagued Kakashi’s mind. He couldn’t get rid of them and it was driving him absolutely insane.

The trees rustled in a way that seemed unnatural. From the distance, Kakashi could sense chakra signatures. Nothing threatening, but he still collected himself off the ground.

“Kakashi!” the voice belonged to his good friend and rival, Maito Gai. “People have been looking for you.”

“Well you found me,” Kakashi stated bitterly.

“Well, this is no time for you just stand around,” Gai said. “Tsunade wants you at the hospital.”

“What?” The panic rose. Gai looked so serious for once. Kakashi felt his heart beat so hard it could just burst out of his chest.

You lay in bed, fingers clutching at the blanket while staring up at the ceiling whilst contemplating whether or not to bother Neji, who you assumed was sound asleep. The thunder had seemed to die down somewhat, the only thing you could see were the flashes of lightening that illuminated the room every so often. Your heartbeat began to decelerate as you tried once more to close your eyes and ease yourself off to sleep when..

Another crash of thunder powered through the sky, you immediately jumped out of bed and bolted out of your room. You made your way across the hall to Neji’s room, not bothering to knock as you took sight of his sleeping form in his bed. You hesitated by the door for a moment, not sure whether to wake him or just climb in beside him. Another crash of thunder decided for you as you ran over to the bed and jumped on top of it with a huff. Neji’s eyes immediately snapped open as he noticed you beside him.

“Y/N?” His voice was husky from sleep but you could hear the confusion in his tone.

“Neji. The thunder. I-”

“It’s okay,” He murmured, lifting up the covers so you could climb in beside him. You were certain your face must be red at this point, but you climbed under the sheets and lay beside him on your back. Another crash of thunder filled the room and you jumped, your arm accidentally hitting Neji’s. Neji caught you by surprise, turning on his side and wrapping one of his arms securely around your waist. You turned to the side slightly to see his lavender eyes trained on your face, trying to see your reaction. Another loud crash of thunder filled the room and your body jerked at the noise. Neji’s arm tightened around you in an attempt to soothe your fear. You shuffled slightly so you were lying down facing him, your own hands fisting into the shirt he was wearing. Neji moved his other arm to circle your body completely as he pulled you to his chest, tucking your head under his chin snugly.

“M'sorry, Neji.” You mumbled into his chest, his arms around you soothed the fear, as you felt your breath shallow, sleep threatening to take over your body.

“For what?”

“For waking you up.” You mumbled, “I’m just stupid-”

“It’s not stupid, Y/N.” Neji’s arms tightened around your body, squeezing you gently. You could get used to the feeling of his arms wrapped around you, your heartbeat still beat fast, but not because of the storm outside. You fought with your thoughts as you tried to decide whether to say anything to Neji, wondering whether to risk..

You leaned up quickly and pecked Neji on the lips, you just about noticed his eyes widen as you buried your head back down in his chest, closing your eyes tightly. Neji gently moved one of his hands to underneath your chin, tilting your head to look up into his eyes, your cheeks slightly pink.

“Did you..” Neji couldn’t find the words, his lips parted slightly as he tried to form a coherent sentence.

“I like you, Neji. This is probably the wrong time since I-” You rattled off quickly, noticing his eyes widen in surprise once more. You had a habit of talking too much when you were shy or embarrassed and this was proof of it. “I just thought that-”

Neji cut you off by leaning down and capturing your lips in a soft kiss, your words muffled slightly as you were caught off guard. You closed your eyes as you melted into his body, kissing him back softly.
