My dad would tell me I’m a Nubian Queen. My hair was my crown. My mom and dad told me who I was in God too. That builds high self esteem from a young age. They let me have my own thoughts and opinions and voice. There was no such thing as a child’s place in my household. I was respectful but also my voice was heard. That helps build confidence in your intellect and mind things outside of physical. This also builds high self esteem.

My parents have just always been emotionally available. Always made an effort to take an interest in me as a person, not just as an extension of themselves. They gassed me up, took interest in my extracurricular activities, showed up to different school events, award ceremonies, etc, just always making me feel like I mattered.

It was years later before I realized that not every kid gets that type of treatment. I shudder to think of who I might've turned out to be if I didn't have that love and support at home.
