Bridgerton Thoughts
Beware major spoilers for those who have not seen the series or *gasp* havenāt read the books!
Now on my third watch and second round of reading the books, I have some serious queries for is future.Ā
Did the showrunners really think we wouldnāt notice the same actress who played the former Duchess of Hastings was present at Sir Henry Granvilleās home when Benedict first visited to practice his hand at sketching? I may have been in my cups, but I certainly noticed! Note the lady facing the camera, bottom left as we see into the room with the models.
But, serious kudos to the set designers who included portraits of George and Charlotteās mixed children into the existing portraits at Buckingham Palace! I donāt know how much more we will see of Queen Charlotte, King George III or even dearĀ āPrinnyā next season or beyond, but their inclusion is not unwelcome.Ā
And, for those of us who have watched The Crown, donāt think we didnāt notice the office the Duke of Hastings was originally using at Clyvedon was in fact the current Queen Elizabeth II office! The lighting is much brighter so you can see how frightfully yellow the walls are, but those horse paintings on that wall are unmistakable! I also couldnāt help but notice that the Bridgerton House in Grovesner Square is interesting. The two round towers are old, but the main body of the house is new, or at least clean since the colors of the bricks do not match. Hereās hoping some more recognizable sets/locations are due in the near future!
It is also interesting how much the costumes play into the hierarchy of the ton. Each ball seems to have a running color scheme(Trowbridge: cream and black, Hastings: blue) as do certain families. The Bridgertonās wear blue, Hastings and Danbury burgundy and the Featheringtonās green. And while it seems the rest of polite society does coordinate their attire to whichever ball they are invited to, there are a select few who eschew this rule. Yes, the poor Featherington girls are the most obvious, even their mother does as well. I suppose she thinks if they stand out in theirĀ āhappy colorsā they will have more success on the marriage mart. Hastings and Lady Danbury wear their burgundy almost exclusively, at least until Hastings gets his Duchess! Daphne also changes, going from blues to differing shades of purples after her marriage, refecting the union between her family and Hastings.Even Cressida Cowper goes outside the prescribed colors to try and get some attention on herself!
SPOILERS FOR NON BOOK READERS AHEAD!!!
Now for the meat and potatoes of this, the identity of Lady Whistledown. The addition of Marina Thompson to the narrative is going to add so many layers of scandal to Colinās and Eloiseās stories! How will Colin react when he realizes the Penelope revealed what she knew out of jealousy? How will Sir Philip, knowing how much misery Marina suffered at her hand? I canāt believe they will change either of them so much that they will readily forgive Penelope once her secret comes out. At least with Eloise, she wonāt know that Penelope is Whistledown until just before her own wedding, but it certainly will not create a bridge of trust between herself, her best friend and her new husband. True, Penelope and Marina never even cross paths in the books, but after the changes...Iām not sure the endings will be quite as happy as the novels intended. Sir Philip is a good and honorable man, and even if he and Marina are not actually in love, he will have something to say or do about such a horrid revelation.Ā
I am beyond excited for Antony and Kate next season! The pall mall game is going to be beyond epic! Iām looking forward to seeing his character fleshed out, his fears and his actions after being rejected by Siena. I hope they do Kate justice, a woman who knows herself and is not afraid to give Antony the dressing down he so richly deserves.Ā
And of course Benedictās will also be interesting. The hints theyāve dropped about him not caring about a personās social standing, and the addition of his relationship with Genevieve seem to bode well. While we all hope he will be bisexual, I rather think, based on his reactions, he and the rest of the Bridgertonās are woefully straight.
Knowing that Colinās Eloiseās and Francescaās stories all take place at the same time (hell, the same month!) it will be interesting to see how the writerās decide to handle it. Will each season focus on the one sibling, or will all the stories be interspliced into one?
I do have a question: what happened to the Princeās necklace! It must be nice to be able to lose a diamond necklace at a party and not care about it being returned! Yes, there were lives in the balance so a necklace is a bit lower in importance, but still! Will it make another appearance? Will we see someone, say Cressida, wearing it or even Lady Trowbridge? An honest person would discreetly return it, a smart person would have the jewels removed from the setting and reworked into a new piece and a scandalmonger would wear it for all the world to see! If it was returned, I doubt Daphne would wear it ever again, maybe she would save it for her own daughter to wear for her season!Ā
This new wrinkle with the Featheringtonās! Who will inherit the estate? If it is a cousin, could it be Marinaās father? Is it one of the men who killed him? We know that Lord Featherington offered the deed to his house as collateral for the bet on the fixed match, and he didnāt get it back afterwards! That should have been the first thing to worry about, not the cash. The cash and the deed are both distinctly missing from his desk, which is what really devastates his wife. She and her unmarried daughters have nothing to fall back on except the faint hope that the new Baron will take pity and provide for them. Judging from Portiaās reaction to seeing the name, that seems highly unlikely.
So many questions, hopefully a few will be answered once the next season debuts!
