Steven crying at the end of I Am My Monster
Why you may ask? Because I love suffering and feeling my heart get ripped out. 🙃🙃😭
Also because that deep crying sounds so cathartic after watching Steven suffer through his hardships and frustrations

I love you Chihaya.
Why I Care an Irrational Amount About Breastfeeding in Chihayafuru
Anything can be symbolic in art and something like breastfeeding is an effective symbol for being about to care for your young. However, as most media shys away from including it, let alone giving it any plot significance, I’d have to say its inclusion in this arc of Chihayafuru is ingenious to say the least and its made Haruka Inokuma into one of my favorite characters in the show.
As a previous Queen and now mother, she became motivated to pursue Karuta again at the age of 32. Despite her determination to take back her old title, she is constantly barraged with doubts of whether her pursuit of Karuta is negatively impacting her children. There are several scenes where this is obvious especially the train scene in this episode where she gets a text on the way back from practice saying her baby is crying and needs milk. This isn’t the first time breastfeeding and Karuta have come into direct conflict as we’ve seen her describe her physical tension as a negatively affecting her play. This is built up as a hostile relationship: Karuta is hurting her ability to provide for her children and providing for her children is hurting her ability to play Karuta.
In comes the end of episode 11 where she just put on her Hakama in preparation of her qualifier match for Queen. Already we get her older kid sad she won’t be coming to the park with them but then disaster strikes when her baby needs milk and she insists she can’t breastfeed in a Hakama. This takes all the internal struggles shes having as a character and manifests them as a symbolic external struggle: Her Karuta is forcing her to wear a Hakama which is physically preventing her from feeding her baby. Then of course the savior of Oe’s mom comes in an informs her that you can in fact breastfeed in a Hakama and show her how. The resolution of this physical conflict is mirrored in her internal conflict: She only thought the Hakama prevented her breastfeeding just as she only thought Karuta was negatively effecting her kids. In reality, she realizes, there is no conflict between these two desires and she can have her cake and eat it too.
This is among many reasons why I’ll be routing for her in the qualifiers and hopefully in the Queen finals as well! One of the reasons art is important is it allows us to see things from wildly different viewpoints. As a young male with children I normally wouldn’t be able to connect to the conflict of a new mom trying to reignite old sparks, but by using a widely known process as symbol to represent more complex feeling of motherhood and childcare the narrative becomes a lot simpler to understand and therefor sympathize with.
