"BABY, CAN WE TALK?"
summary. this isn't the first time you and yuji have a meaningless argument and you refuse to talk to him, but it is the first time you're serious— most of the time, it's just your pettiness getting the best of you while he acts like it doesn't affect him. it's also the first time he apologises, and you have no idea how to take it in, so you do what you do best; shut him out. (inspired by "Go Away" ‐ weezer)
skater!bf!itadori yuji x skater!fem reader : miscommunication (mainly on reader's part), petty reader, angst, teen love, shitty rushed ending.
author's note. hehehe guess whose side blog this is :pepegiggle: hint: the lyrics in my bio are from the same artist as the ones in my main. also i might do a part 2 depending on how well this goes
"baby, please open the door." itadori yuji's voice rang out somewhere behind the wooden surface separating your figures. judging from how close he sounded, you could only imagine that he had his head hung low, forehead against your door. "can we just talk?"
it's funny because it's not even a fight anymore. usually, you and yuji's time consists of you two having fun goofing around the skate park, stealing each other's snacks and arguing with little kids over who's the better hero between batman and superman. that is until he either tells you that nirvana is outdated or says something that very slightly hurts your feelings. like a switch, your mood sours and you stomp out of the skatepark with an echo of his voice telling you how dramatic you are trailing behind you.
so it's really just the type of argument that starts off rough and ugly— with too many "whatever"'s and even more silence, yet ends with you forgiving him after he sends you some stupid tung tung tung sahur stickers, or those sappy "send this to that person who makes your day by just existing" texts over sunset pictures with slow music instagram reels that always leave you smiling at your phone until your face hurts.
this time, however, it stuck like glue.
not because yuji was insufferable (though, from your point of view, he kind of was), no. it's because you were already having a bad day. you'd just gotten out of a messy debate with your mother about how skating was distracting you from your studies when it literally wasn't, and he, being himself, once again stood you up and messaged you: "sorry, i can't make it. kugisaki bet that i can't do a kickflip over the main ramp without falling" like that would somehow make it any better.
double that with your sensitive, petty nature, and you've got the situation you're in now.
for the rest of the day, and the morning after that, you refused to talk to him. not even doing as much as glancing his way in the school halls when you passed by him, even when you saw his head turn towards your figure from your peripheral vision. the cold shoulder, his good old friend, and a constant present he recieves from his petulant yet dear girlfriend.
usually, he would ignore you too— thinking that the cracks will soon mend all on their own, until he can't handle the distance anymore and reaches out towards you.
today, however, he felt as if he should do it earlier than usual. with the correct push from fushiguro, yuji dropped his skateboard on the concrete ground and coasted down the street his foor kicking softly at the pavement as he went in a direction he grew all familiar with and did not stop until he rolled infront of your house.
so now here you are, back pressed to the door he stood infront of, not even doing as much as sparing him a hum.
"i know you can hear me. just listen to me- five minutes is all i'm asking for." quiet, soft and uncharacteristically fragile. so unlike his usual chirp. it's crazy how gentle he becomes when he truly is not running from you. "i'm really sorry."
though it was mostly your stubborn nature getting the best of you, you did feel a bit hurt that he didn't show up when you really needed him by your side.
"please. don't hurt me like this anymore."
you quietly clicked your tongue at that statement. hilarious how he didn't consider that he'd hurt you by leaving you hanging.
"...yuji," you softly called out, to which he quickly perked up to— you could practically feel the hope radiating out of him, even when you can't see the expactant grin on his face. that's just how predictable he is.
"y-yes? are you—"
"go away."
two, simple yet gut wrenching words, capable of draining whatever faith he had left in him.
and it wasn't like you really meant it. the words slipped out of you before you could even think of stopping them. it's almost like it was an automated response, coded into your very being as a method to protect yourself from whatever hurt you were going through— but damn, was this system terrible.
yuji's grin faded as quickly as it appeared, leaving a disappointed frown in it's stead. "baby, you're not being reasonable right now... please just let me explain!"
"go away, yuji." you repeated, much more firmly than earlier. the damage was done, might as well keep your kingdom walls up even when your castle is going up in flames.
for a moment, there was silence.
not the comfortable kind that settles between two people who understand each other without words, but the kind that stretches too thin. like it might snap if either of you breathed the wrong way. the air felt heavier in it, like even the entire neighbourhood had paused out of politeness. yuji didn’t joke, and you didn’t say "psych! got ya!". It just hung there between you both, unfinished and trembling, as if something had been said without anyone actually speaking it out loud.
after a minute that felt too long, your boyfriend clenched his jaw and fists to resist breaking the door down to grab you by the shoulders and shake you until you listen to him. he just moved back, his warm hues gazing at your door like it was the one that shut him out on it''s own command. finally, he broke the silence that lasted an eternity in his mind.
"okay." he cringed at how broken his voice came out before clearing his throat. "i... i'm sorry. i love you, i really do."
"..."
were his final words before he stepped away from your door. with a heavy heart, yuji turned around and walked down the steps of your porch, the red skateboard you two decorated together setting on the ground. for a moment, he paused to look back, thinking there might be a chance you'd open the door and walk up to him. hug him, if you're feeling nice, or even kiss him if he's lucky.
but of course, that remains a simple wish.
with a silent exhale, yuji stepped back onto his skateboard and pushed off, the wheels humming softly against the pavement as he rolled away from your house. the vibrations did little to settle whatever was sitting heavy in his chest. a steady, aimless rhythm carrying him further down the street.
meanwhile, you stayed by the door, still and unmoving, listening to your boyfriend drift further out of reach. his footsteps faded first, uneven and reluctant, before the soft clack of his skateboard hit the ground. there was a brief pause, too brief to mean anything good, then the familiar rolling sound returned, slower this time, like even the motion itself had lost its usual ease.
you sighed quite shakily and slid down the door until you sat on the floor, wanting nothing more than to beat yourself up for not hearing him out, for pushing him away and once again refusing the option of peace because of your pride. but alas, your mind still refuses to believe you did anything wrong.
honestly... what's between you two might take more than silly videos to be fixed this time.
