“Only surviving gravestone from the burying ground at New Castle, Eighteenth Century tobacco port on the Pamunkey River near this place. Removed from eroding riverbank during the 1940s by Haddon Christopher Alexander.” The stone is in the cemetery at Immanuel Episcopal Church, in Old Church (Hanover County), Virginia.

Preserved forever? Seems a little late…
Jk. Glad the ABT was able to preserve the site of the Cold Harbor tavern.

Recently I’ve wrapped up two book, “Gates of Fire” by Steven Pressfield and “Call Sign Chaos” by Gen. Mattis. Both were good in there own way. I came across “Gates of Fire” because of Gen. Mattis. It’s a book he’s recommended in past interviews and is on his personal reading list. I also believe it is on the Marine Corps Reading List. It’s an interesting take on Sparta in the years and days leading up to the Battle of Thermopylae, from the perspective of a perioikoi. Its not a traditional feel good read (the narrator is Greek and guess who didn’t win at Thermopylae?) but worth it if you find the topic interesting. “Call Sign Chaos” covers Mattis’ life and career from childhood to his leaving US Central Command. He’s a contemporary figure for us, so obviously he inspires debate that goes beyond his own conduct. Mattis is also a man who has served closely with three presidents (G.W. Bush, Obama, and Trump) and has managed to have conflict with all three (and that’s according to the book, not my opinion). So needless to say he’s an interesting figure. But “Call Sign Chaos” is not a tell-all. For people interested in the man I’d say it’d be a good read, but it’s not detail battle tactics, a political exposé, or a “how to” on being a leader.

Some of the dorky Valentine cards I’ve collected over the years.
My buddy painted these. The man has talent.
I’m no Joe Rogan fan but I hope Neil Young will remember, Spotify don’t need him around anyhow.

Whenever I refer to my wife as a “handsome” woman she looks at me with disgust. Maybe it’s because I’ve been leaving the “portly” out?
“The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”
