How a culture of creative collaboration has helped the company maintain its brand voice amid rapid growth.
"One thing that hasn’t changed from the brand’s upstart days is the practice of encouraging people to contribute to any project that interests them."
"It’s often said that good design disappears because it’s not in the way. I would say that amazing design also disappears but peeks out every now and then to make someone smile."
"...amazing experiences make people happy and happy people make the world a better place."

Aaron Draplin Takes On a Logo Design Challenge
"If there is one thing that writing all of this down has reminded me of, it is that making great digital products is hard. Yet, the joy and privilege of what we designers get to do every day lies in the depths of this challenge. And of course luck plays a role; of course randomness emerges out of complexity. But I want to approach what I do as a craft, not a lottery. Great digital products don’t happen by accident."
Well said. For me, solving the puzzle is the best part and challenging puzzles are much more fun and fulfilling than the easy ones.
Our first piece of ongoing research into usability best practices tackles scrolling.
-------------------------------------------------
Huge tested four different cues for scrolling when users first land on a webpage:Â full image, arrow, short image, animated image.
They found that almost all participants scrolled regardless of what cue was used. The important part as a designer is to chose which cue to use based on the context.
Elliott Headman is pioneering a new approach to design research, combining observational techniques and stress-testing sensors.
"It’s a future in which usability testing is happening continuously, invisibly, all around us. And, perhaps more interestingly, one in which products could find ways to adjust themselves moment to moment, based on our emotional state."
"For now, though, all this new data is most useful for identifying problems. It’s up to designers to figure out how to solve them."
"Still, while these sensors and other technologies will continue to make design research more exact, there’s plenty of room left for creativity in what follows. “Identifying the problems is the easy part,” Hedman says. “Coming up with solutions is hard.” "
Over the last several months I have dove into designing and developing my own personal portfolio website. I used HTML and CSS with the help of bootstrap.
I've finally hit a point where I'm satisfied with how it looks and feels, however, I will never be satisfied with my skills and will continue to develop them.
Onward.

"For me, storytelling is so much a part of the visualization of any kind of finished product."
A non-artsy primer in digital aesthetics

Great read for any UI / UX designer. I'm working hard to really up my game on my visual design skills to integrate them with the more behind-the-scenes UX skills that I've learned through General Assembly and my work experience.
A designer’s process determines the difference between mediocre and great work. Natural talent and training aren’t substitutes for good design habits. The right process can cover many shortcomings of talent and skill — but the opposite is never true. A good process will bring out your best and…
Last day of UXDI @generalassembly Boston!!! We did it!! (at General Assembly, 51 Melcher Street)
Feels great to be done with our final project. We were lucky enough to work with Kevin Kupillas and Drew Condon, part of the UX team at RunKeeper. Thank you guys for coming!

Still a work in progress, but getting down on some mobile UI design today adding weather preference settings to the RunKeeper app.
