Eventide comes slowly, but darkness strikes quick. The night is sultry, leaving spots in the periphery of the eyes and the deep prick of pain in the head or the heart. Koto turns in her bed, sleepless, the bamboo slats of her summer mat clicking gently, and realizes she’d left the candle flickering at her reading desk.

In the haze, tired, she watches the flame glower, seeing double. Watches it sunder into three, six, twelve flickering lights. Suddenly, night is upon her and the sky is awash with lanterns.
