One day, the dog hides in Rey’s car and she only notices when she’s already parked at home. She has twenty panicked messages from Ben. She calls immediately and explains the situation, though she’s baffled as to how he managed to sneak in without her noticing. The relief in his voice makes her chest ache.

He says he’ll pick up the little vagrant as soon as he finds his keys, which he misplaced during his search for the missing pup.

“If that’s okay with you?” He sounds hesitant.

(As if she would ever say no.)

“We’ll be waiting,” she says, petting Moose, who has his head on her lap.

“Great, see you both soon,” is the last thing she hears before he hangs up. Her lips curl into an involuntary grin. Seeing Ben twice in one day is a treat, made even better by the fact that she currently has a sleepy puppy to cuddle.

She snuggles up to Moose on the couch, stretching her tired back. It takes no time at all for her eyelids to drop and for sleep to overtake her.

That’s how Ben finds her, 20 minutes later, after he lets himself in through the unlocked front door — he’ll lecture her about it later.

A weaker man wouldn’t have admitted to almost being brought to his knees by the sight of a pretty girl cuddling their dog, but Ben Solo is anything but weak. His stomach turns a somersault at the sight at the same time as something within his soul settles.

It feels right.
