New Guests
Today there were supposed to be new guests at the inn… or at least so she had heard. So far they had yet to arrive and she wasn’t even sure where they were supposed to be coming from. So she had spent the whole day cleaning… and recleaning. When the cleaning wasn’t enough she started experimenting with different meals. She had now prepared 3 new menu items that were in desperate need of a taste test. Hopefully she would find someone willing to try them! But unfortunately this meant she now had sauce in the corner of her face and flour in her hair. The inn might be clean but she looked anything but now.
Pandora was growing tired of her daily routine, so she decided to try somewhere new to eat. There was an inn nearby that she had heard about. That was enough for her pick it as her next stop for the day.
To her surprise, the inn was empty when she got there. There wasn’t even anyone behind the counter. Pandora could hear noises coming from a room to the left. She thought about just leaving for a moment, but decided against it and went to investigate the noises.
Inside was a woman with purple hair with some white mixed in and some substance on her face. Pandora didn’t care enough to ask.
“I’m waiting to be served,” she said impatiently.
Oh no! I'm so sorry, my sister is out of town and I must have lost track of time," her cheeks redden as she offers the woman before her an apologetic look, tucking a stray hair behind her ear.
"What can I get for you today? If you want to try the specials I've been working on, I'd be willing to serve you for free, all I ask for is an honest opinion," she explains as she looks over the cheesy curry rice, the fish stew, and the late summer harvest salad that she had prepared.

An Overwhelmed Chef | Odette & Lily
chefodette:
“Alright, since that’s the case I’d really appreciate all the help! It’s going to be pretty fast paced though, since it’s the rush hour. If you could handle the pot of soup, it just needs to be stirred and then there are a few eggs I have prepared to add towards the end, just before we take it off the heat. Oh, and you are welcome to season it to your taste, I’ve been fiddling with the recipe and haven’t decided on the best combinations yet, there are so many options when it comes to soup!”Â
She seems to have calmed down slightly now that one of the tasks is being handled by someone else. The stir fry is now no longer in danger of being burned, and she is able to actually attend to the deboning of the fish. She is even humming a song to herself to keep a steady rhythm. She does look to Lily every now and again to see how she is doing, her Lily had her a little worried when it came to sharing the kitchen!
Lily gave the soup a good stir through, making sure that none of the vegetables were burning on the bottom. After the chef gave her permission, she took a large spoon and took a small amount to taste. It was good, but a little bland. She added another sprinkle of salt, and after a moment pondering the remaining spices, a pinch of cayenne pepper. She tasted it again. Perfect.Â
Detecting that the soup was nearly ready, Lily scanned the nearby work surfaces for the eggs that the woman had prepared. She found them cast haphazardly on the side, probably in another rush job, and added them to the soup. To allow them to heat through, she gave the pot another few minutes on the hob, stirring regularly, before taking it off.Â
“Is this ready to be plated?” she directed towards Odette, pleased to see that the chef was looking a little less stressed with her manageable amount of tasks.Â
“It is! Thank you so much for your help. And this should be... just about ready now,” she notes with a warm smile as she considers the rest of the dishes before her and begins to prepare the plates for the various guests, giving instructions to Lily as she does so. Once everything has been plated and handed to the customers she allows herself an easier, more relaxed grin. “Thank you so much again! I don’t know what I’d have done if you hadn’t come by. As thanks, if you ever want to use the kitchen... and the ingredients within reason you are welcome to practice! I think I can trust you not to burn anything down and to clean up after yourself.”

Oooh, a soup stock? She’d stock up on that idea later- that could be a fantastic idea for cost-saving measures for her future restaurant. Of course, cost-saving measures didn’t have to be taken all the time- they were simply convenient when it became available for her. “Hmm. What’s a good drying measure- artificial drying, sun-drying or simply just leaving them out to dry inside? I mean, obviously they would work differently for varying vegetables, but what kind of drying method would work best for, say….” She’d flip the mushroom stem between her fingers. “This one?” When it came to the oil-frying step, she was rather heavy-handed when it came to the oil, being used to the fried style of her hometown’s cooking. “And, uh, soaking up the oil is a bad thing, I’m assuming.” She’d mutter before pouring a bit of the oil back into the bottle. “Okay. I’ll try that.” She’d say, putting up an apron as a shield in front of herself before flicking the water into the pan. They’d boil upon contact and splatter a bit, but she was shielded. “Is that…. good? Or bad?”Â
“The easiest technique is to put them in a bag and hang it from a lamp since the light will help it to dry out. Easy, out of the way, and it doesn’t require any extra work on your part!” “That’s exactly right! Too much oil and it turns out too heavy and soggy so the flavor isn’t the same. It’s inevitable with certain vegetables but you want to use a lighter oil to counteract the issue if you can. And that’s perfect! The pan is hot enough. Be careful adding the mushrooms to make sure you don’t have anything splatter on you,” she offers a warm smile to Pam, it always made her happy to have an enthusiastic and competent student in the kitchen.

An Old Friend
Odette hadn’t gotten to see Iris in years, not since they were in school together. Iris was a few years older then she was and a huge help to her as a tutor. While she was great at practical things like cooking... things like essay writing and mathematics did not come easy to her. So much so that she had yet to finish her degree. She was so busy trying to keep up with the cooking for the inn, it wasn’t fair for Lily to need to take care of everything while she and Violet were going to school. So she went back home before her last term to help take care of the legacy that their parents had left them, the only thing they had left to hold on to. She didn’t regret it, but maybe some day she could find a way to complete the work for the last few courses she needed while maintaining the inn. She was rather caught up in her reminiscing but eventually catches sight of familiar blonde hair. Waving she calls out, “Iris! I can hardly believe it’s you. I don’t even know where to start it’s been so long!”
Sisterly Bonding| Odette & Violet
Odette was so excited to finally have the time to catch up with her younger sister. So excited in fact that she may have… overdone the preparations. But catching up required tea and all of Violet’s favorite snacks. Plus a vase with all her favorite flowers. Not to mention a basket of snacks for her to take home. Okay, she had missed her sister a lot! But this was a perfectly normal level of preparation and she was sticking to it. As she sets out the last of the snacks, she can be found humming a song under her breath, truly a sign she wasn’t even trying to contain her excitement. She had so much she needed to ask her sister, especially the latest news about the doctor she was dating! She never expected sweet little Violet to fall for a man like him… but she trusted her sister’s judgement. That wasn’t going to save him from future interrogations and threats, however! She had a duty to uphold as the middle sister, and she was going to do it.Â
As she is lost in thoughts and preparation, it would be entirely possible for her younger sister to catch her off guard if she chooses now to enter. For now, Odette truly is living in her own head, barely even noticing that she had filled just about every inch of the table between the pot of tea, the snacks, and the nice tableware.Â
Violet smiled on her way to Odette’s place, always happy to catch up with one of her older sisters. While Violet’s cooking paled in comparison to Odette’s, she did try to bring some snacks for the two of them to enjoy - some cookies she decided to make - and some lilies that she grew on her windowsill. Sure, Odette probably was preparing a lot, but it didn’t feel right for Violet to come empty-handed.
Finally, Violet reached the front door and knocked, a bright smile on her face.
“Odette…?” Violet called out, “I-It’s me, Violet…”
Odette almost drops a cup that she had decided to rearrange for the third time when Violet knocks. But it was the one Violet always used when they were younger! It was important and she needed to find just the right spot for it. Thankfully, she did not drop it and instead sets it down in the spot she had originally placed it before all of her rearranging. She then answers the door, her eyes positively lighting up as she smiles at her sister. “Violet! It’s so good to see you. How have you been? I’ve missed you so much! Oh we have so much to talk about, please come in... after you give me a hug! It has been way too long since we’ve caught up!” Though she doesn’t let it show on her face, at present she is personally offended by the things Violet is carrying, not because they are unwelcome but because the overfilled table will have to be rearranged before she can safely hug her sister. But she looks over the flowers with a fond smile anyways, “I’m glad you’ve still been able to do some gardening, Vi! Those look beautiful.”
An Overwhelmed Chef | Odette & Lily

She barely notices the woman enter. It isn’t until the sound of her voice that she is brought back to reality, and she blinks a few times in surprise before flashing her a smile, though it plainly shows her exhaustion as she wipes the sweat from her brow. Really, she almost missed the winter, doing all this cooking in the summer had her yearning for a swim in the ocean. But she nonetheless manages to speak, not entirely concealing the fact she is becoming winded and says, “I have things under control for now! I couldn’t put a guest to…” and with that the very last spice in the row falls to the ground with a crash, spilling the spices all over the counter. Looking sheepish she brushes a piece of hair that had been stuck to her face, damp with sweat out of the way and says, “I could definitely use the help. Lily, right? Do you have any experience in the kitchen? If not, even helping to clean up areas after I’m done and stirring the soup would be really helpful!”
She flashes another grateful smile and barely waits for a response before she is sweeping up the glass and spices, tossing them in the garbage before returning to the sauteing vegetables, the most delicate of the things she is preparing at the moment.
Lily didn’t have a huge amount of experience in the kitchen, purely due to the fact that she didn’t often have access to one. However, she loved to cook and had learned recipes from all over the world during her time travelling, borrowing the kitchens of inns or kind inhabitants of whatever town she was in.Â
“I have some experience,” she said, hopping over the smashed glass to stir the soup. Just in the nick of time, it seemed, as it was beginning to stick to the bottom. She turned the heat down just a little to prevent it from boiling. “I can clean if you’d like, but I’d love to do some cooking, especially if it would help you out.”Â
A Reasonable Exchange | Pam & Odette
Pam soared through the air, bouncing around the general plaza in excitement and happiness, before quickly coming back to her senses and returning to her usual stance. She had just seen a posting on the Request Board, advertising the fact that there were now cooking lessons being given out by some person named “Odette.” They were dirt cheap compared to the potential value Pam might get from better culinary skill. The only catch was that Pam was going to have to take trips to Arcadia in order to make it. It wasn’t too much of a bother, thanks to Pam’s new-found riches. After snatching up her purse and her precious Pink Diamond, Pam hitched a ride to Arcadia and went to the house of the person giving out the cooking lessons. She brought her fishing rod, too, so she could get some fish out there while she waited for the round trip boat to return for her. Perhaps she could even forage a bit, too…..
That wasn’t the point, though- the point was that Pam was now ready and rarin’ to cook up a storm- hopefully not literally, although there was a good chance of that. She knocked firmly on the door and waited an uncomfortably long time before realizing it was an inn. She walked up to the door inside the inn of the room of the person hopefully who could teach her how to cook, and she knocked on the door firmly again, standing as confidently and cooly as she could. “Hello there, ma’am. My name’s Pam, and I’ve come to take you up on your offer for cooking lessons. The payment’s here in full, if you want to check first.”
Odette had been hoping to make some extra money, and doing something she loved was a nice bonus! So here she was waiting to see if anyone would show up for the first in her series of cooking lessons, something she struggled with. Cooking vegetables five ways.
As the woman knocks on the door to the kitchen she opens it with a warm smile, “Welcome! You’ve come to the right place, I’m Odette. It’s so nice to meet you, and welcome!”
Though not doubting the payment in the slightest she accepts it while only taking a second to make sure it is all there. Her smile widening she gestures for Pam to enter, “Come on in! Let’s wash up and then I’ll show you what we’ll be working on to start.”
Upon entering the kitchen, Pam would see an array of vegetables in baskets, each next to a different cooking tool. Cabbage for boiling, squash for baking, mushrooms for sauteing, potatoes for steaming, and cucumbers for pickling. Odette washes her hands in the sink before turning to her student and asking, “Right! How familiar are you with kitchen tools? What are some you may have used on your own? If you haven’t used many that’s fine! It means we won’t have to break any bad habits.”
“Very nice to meet you as well, Odette.” Pam walked into the room, acting slightly more comfortable now that they had been properly introduced to one another. The payment was all there, plus a few extra G added in as a tip. Pam wanted to make a good first impression, and the one thing she knew how to do was offer a tip. After washing up, Pam walked back into the kitchen and observed the melody of produce. She recognized most of the stations, and was familiar with at least a few of the techniques, but she was rusty as scrap metal on the beach, with most of the ideas being vague jumbles in her head. After Odette’s fierce questioning, Pam would take a moment and utter a few stutters before she finally remembered what she could and couldn’t do. “Well, I do remember most of these, but I’ve mostly just used a knife, a cutting board, a pan, a pot, and occasionally I used the oven, but just for basics. I have tried to steam and boil some things before, but they never came out right.” Pam wandered between each station and observed each vegetable, pointing out certain ones she had used frequently before, like the mushrooms and the potatoes, as well as the ones she had no memory of even seeing before they were traditionally prepared, like the cucumbers. She seemed, on the whole, decently experienced as a home chef but atrociously under experienced for professional cooking.Â
“Okay, so familiar enough with the basics in that case, that’s good to know for figuring out where to take the lessons! To start, I’ll show you a few tricks that will help you slice up the mushrooms we’ll be sauteing quickly and safely! Not to mention a trick for cleaning them, I used to make the mistake of soaking them in water to get all the dirt off… but that ended up ruining the texture. It takes longer, but wiping them off with a damp cloth is the best way to clean them off.”
With this said she takes a damp cloth and begins to clean a small handful of the mushrooms off before using a dry cloth to remove any excess moisture. She then waits for Pam to take a moment to do the same with a handful of her own before moving on and noting, “From here, you want to take a sharp, straight edged knife, none of those ones with the serrated edges. Then we’ll want to place the mushrooms on their side, with the stem pointing towards the cutting board,” she demonstrates with a smile. From here Odette goes through the process of very thoroughly explaining the twelve steps involved in properly cutting mushrooms, of which we are now at step four.
“Huh. Alright. I’ve always gone with washing the vegetables, but I suppose this might work better.” Pam follows along quite closely, wiping down the mushroom using the wet cloth and also using another dry cloth to clean the remaining liquid. She seemed to be getting the hang of cleaning the mushrooms before they moved on to the next step, but she was a little more mixed up with the mushroom cutting. Perhaps not because of the instructions, but her questions on why she had to take some specific steps. Eventually, she returned to her typical rhythm, instead marking questions in her mind to ask after they finished cutting up the mushrooms, and by the time they finished the final step she had too many questions to remember. She motioned to Odette to pause for a moment, before she asked some of the few queries she could recall. “So, after we cut off the mushroom stem, we just throw it out? Surely there must be some kinda way we can cook it, so it doesn’t go to waste.” She questioned.
“That’s a great question and I’m glad you asked it! We have a few different options for the stems. Some people toss it out, others use it for compost. But for me, I prefer to dry them out so that they can be used for a soup stock later. I save the scraps from different vegetables as well, it can make for a tasty base, though it tends to turn out different each time because I’ll have different vegetables on hand depending on the season,” she has a broad smile as she rambles about the process, nothing made her happier then an eager student asking all the right questions! She does make a few corrections to technique during the process but overall, Odette was pleased with her new student. After this she takes out some oil and pours some in the pan explaining as she does so, “The mushrooms are a little tricky because of the tendency to soak up the oil. You’ll want to make sure the pan is hot before they go in so they aren’t in the oil for as long! A good way to test if it is hot enough is to flick a few drops of water into the pan. But you need to be careful doing this so it doesn’t splatter on you.”

Singing Lessons
Odette had always had... a hard time letting others hear her sing. With Lily being such a gifted singer, she always felt as though her voice paled in comparison. So much so that only the dragons ever heard her sing, since if they were to judge she wouldn’t exactly be able to tell. Then recent events with Fiersome happened and -now- she was considering her voice wasn’t suited to singing to the dragons either. So here she was knocking on her sister’s door in the hopes that she would consider giving her lessons so that she wouldn’t risk angering any other dragons. It was probably a coincidence but... it didn’t hurt to be safe.
With this thought in mind she knocks a few times and calls out, “Hey, Lily? Do you have a minute? I wanted to ask you a favor,” doing her best not to let her nervousness show. However, her sister can most definitely notice the telltale tucking of her hair behind her ear, and the gentle tapping of her toe against the floor.
