radio static, a broken mirror and bloody knuckles, a grand piano falling out of tune, a still lake with a riptide just below the surface, bruised knuckles loosely bandaged, ringed stains on a wooden table, a hole cut in a chain link fence, tall waves breaking over a lighthouse, dilapidated signs marking an overgrown path, crumpled half-empty pack of cigarettes, rain flowing through a storm drain, papers spread over the floor, broken strings on a violin, a single light in the window, words wrapped in barbed wire
ADDICTION TW, DRUG TW, HATE TW: Toward the end of his career at Hogwarts, Aidan began to fall in with the wrong crowd. Any time not dedicated to studying was spent with Xander and his cronies, drinking, doing any drugs they could get their hands on, and talking. Those hours under the influence lured Aidan into their thoughts and ideologies, the feelings of freedom intricately bound to the hate that spilled out of all their mouths. In his sober moments, Aidan grew progressively angrier, fighting with his parents, his teachers, anyone that dared look at him the wrong way. Once he had passed his NEWTs with flying colours, any societal expectations binding him fell away. Why did he need to listen to authority? He could work with his friends to create a new world where they would have the power. Safe at Hogwarts, the hiding out in Hogsmeade, Aidan moved with the flow of the group, carried along on a new path. He shunned his family, his passions, the person he had been for the first 17 years of his life and walked away from it all, embracing the drugs, the hate, and the increasingly conditional acceptance of his group. It took less than six months for Aidan to realize that he had made a huge mistake, a sober realization that shook him to the core. The reality of what he had gotten himself into was enough to send everything to a grinding halt and send Aidan scrambling for a way outâany way out. Turning in Xander to the Auror Office was the key that freed him from the cage, and the second he was out he ran without looking back. The damage had already been done; he wasnât blind to the rumours that flew about him and was sure that they had reached his family. There was no going back; there was no way they would want him now. Sober, Aidan set off to travel, eventually landing back in Phoenix Circus to start anew.
Growing up in a musical house, it was impossible not to fall in love with music. Piano was his first instrument, and Aidan soon added guitar, bass, saxophone, and cello to the list. Still, it was rock that truly spoke to him, muggle music from decades past worming its way into his soul and taking root there. At Hogwarts, Aidan started his own radio show, Lumos, playing music to any students listening and taking dedications from the few that reached out. It would have been the perfect career, but Aidan knew now there was no way he ever could have become a public figure. After turning in Xander and his old friends, Aidan had remained in occasional contact with the Aurors who had helped him, occasionally lending his thoughts on cases. The cases took up space in his mind, pushing out the memories of all he had seen and all he had lost, and Aidan loved it. That was what had drawn him to apply to the DMLE, but it was still beyond him a year later why it was his application that had gotten pulled into the pool for Auror Training. Yes, he had the NEWTs and the drive for it, but his past⌠Then again, maybe it was that that set him apart, the intimate knowledge. Either way, Aidan was grateful for the opportunity to right the wrongs of his past and swore not to waste it.
Ironically, considering the views of his former friends and the views that Aidan himself had once paid lip service to, these days he almost feels more comfortable in muggle spaces. Thereâs no baggage there, no chance of him being recognized, no whispers following him. He holds a membership at a muggle boxing gym, frequents a nearby muggle coffeeshop, and even performs on occasion at a bar with open mic nights. Heâs become quite the regular there, his songs receiving standing ovations. Those songs are his outlet, his feelings poured out over pages. With few friends and no family to speak of, the pages of his songs have seen his innermost thoughts, both good and bad. Sometimes, after a set, he finds himself looking through the crowd, desperately wishing his family were there to see it. Itâs the one and only time in his life heâs ever been certain that they would be proud of him.
Itâs been so long since the last time he saw Anna (and she was so young) that Aidan isnât even sure he would recognize his baby sister if he saw her. Unbeknownst to him, she lives right above him and heâs almost certainly seen her before. He didnât recognize her.
The last words he exchanged with his parents were a massive fight. They had been fighting more in the past few months, but in that last fight, Aidan had said things he knew he couldnât take back ever. The only soundtrack to packing his things were his motherâs muffled sobs. He didnât say goodbye to Anna.
