Tears of the Kingdom is such an interesting game to talk about. A lot of people have some pretty strong opinions on the game. The loudest I would say are those who dislike the game. I wouldn’t be lying if I said that I’ve become fatigued from all the hate thrown towards the game. Let me clarify that it’s perfectly ok to dislike the game and I agree with a lot of the genuine criticism people have for it. The game has a lot of things going on. I think that’s why it can be difficult to talk about. Because there’s so many things to the game, weather or not something is a personal opinion versus an actual flaw can be a bit messy. Just for example The Depths. Most people make the observation that The Depths is a bit of a wasteland of things to do. Mainly just bonus stuff that’s optional. One could then make the argument that The Depths are intentionally designed that way, meant to be something you do on the side from time to time. I hope what I’m saying is understood. I don’t think either are wrong but determining weather people disliking it is the games fault or just personal opinion can be difficult. Honestly Tears of the Kingdom is like a buffet. With a buffet there’s still structure and stuff but you can basically choose what you want. This allows for a large amount of personal choice to the customer. But some customers will inevitably get a bad slice of ham. When you have such a large selection of stuff going on all asking you to choose, some people are going to take their meal and come out unsatisfied. I don’t completely blame the player either. While I think a level of personal responsibility is important, having such inconsistent quality across the whole buffet line is going to put some people off, even if on average the quality is good. I also noticed a lot of people who like the older games who come in to say things like “the Zelda I grew up with was better.” That’s just personal opinion, obviously, but I think what bothers me is when some claim that BotW and TotK are “not Zelda games.” It perplexes me because who are we as fans to determine what is and isn’t a Zelda game. I think a lot of people who repeat this rhetoric fail to realize that not every game is going to click with you and they’re not supposed to all connect with them. I understand that BotW and TotK are pretty different from the rest of the series, but what I mostly see from these types is people clinging onto the past, unwilling to look forward to the future as their series moves on without them. It reminds me of Windwaker, how Ganondorf and the King were stuck in the past. Grieving about something they don’t have anymore. Not to say you can’t miss the past, but I think more of these types of people should take a note from the King. Accepting that the world is moving on without him instead of continuing to be bitter, wallowing about how the past was better. I think more people would be happier if they accepted that the series is not in their control, and it’s going to go into many different directions, even if those directions aren’t for them.
