Luciano decided that today he would pick up the last of his and Renata’s things from his parents’ house. Having nothing better to do, and not wanting to keep putting it off, he left the Vaduva mansion. As he turns onto the street mom and dad lived on, the sight of their house smoking and burning catches his eyes. He stops his car, the brakes squealing under his foot, and he pulls it up to the side of the house. Shock punches him in the gut and he stares for a few seconds, trying to make his mind believe what he was seeing. It’s the wrong house, I’m at the wrong house, he thinks. But nope, there are the rose bushes he’d come to recognize so well, and the nice red door that seemed so inviting. He can see that the paint around the windows are blackened, and the air around the house is hazy. Already there are a few people gathering across the street, pointing and anxiously speaking into their phones. As he gets out of car and steps onto the sidewalk, his ears pick up on something: his dad is yelling from inside the building. For an ugly second Luciano considers pretending to not have heard anything at all.
A worried neighbor walks up to him—he recognizes her, she’d offered their family a welcoming basket when they first moved in. What was her name again? Lily? Lucy?. He can’t remember, his nose is overpowered by the scent of burning marshmallow. ”Hey, was anybody home? Do you know?” She asks, looking between the fire and Luciano. Her hands are stuffed worriedly into the crooks of her elbows as she crosses her arms over her chest.
He shoots her a glance. “My dad’s in there.” He says, staring at the smoke pouring out of the crack from under the front door. He can’t remember what he learned about house fires all those years ago. Smoke coming out from under doors, does that meant it was already on fire, or that it’s going to be on fire soon? How much time does he have?
"Oh my god," She says, putting a hand on his shoulder to—comfort him, he guesses? "We called a fire truck they’ll be here soon."
The distant sound of something collapsing from inside reaches both their ears, and Luciano shrugs off her hand. “Not soon enough.” A fireman couldn’t get into and out of the building the way he could, nor could they handle the smoke and fire for as long as he could.
A protest leaves her mouth, but it’s too late, he’s already halfway across the lawn. He remembers to pull back on his speed, not wanting to startle the gathering crowd behind him. As leaps up the front steps, the scent of burning marshmallow gets strong enough to make his eyes water. His hand wraps around the handle, but the heat from it sears through his palm and he releases it. His healing factor kicks in right away, and the minor burns are gone before they can fully register in his brain. Luciano takes a step back, his eyes looking left, right, and up to the second floor. Smoke is billowing out from this part of the building, it doesn’t seem safe enough for him to go in this way. If there’s fires on the other side of this wall, there was no way he could get through it.
The back door, his brain helpfully supplies, and he runs off toward the porch. He runs by the flower tree he planted for Renata, past the garden that had started to look just a little over grown. The crackling and popping sound is diminished from this side of the building, and the air is just a little more fresher. His feet hop up the steps in one large bound, his eyes fixated on the wide open back door. The sight of the kitchen graces his eyes.
