My favourite thing to do on the weekend in Abuja is to go to a restaurant with a nice view, eat, review it and then make a mental note to go back in a few months to see if they’ve improved. No one could understand it. It seemed like the restaurant was trying too hard to do a few things but their online menu seems like they’ve trimmed down their offerings by a lot since their soft opening and that is very promising. The Jambalaya Rice and Braised Lamb from @dunadura.abj looked almost too good to eat but my friend promises it tasted average. “It tasted like something but wasn’t jambalaya 👀” is the best way to explain it. When we went, the restaurant was still in its soft launch phase so it is very possible they’ve gotten better with time. Went to @dunadura.abj for chips and salsa and had really good chips and salsa! Of all the things we had that day, I think we really enjoyed the salsa here. It was fresh, the taste was bright and lemony AND the diced vegetables made it crunchy but also silky way the same time. This smoked chicken club (minus the egg bc who really likes egg 😐) from @the_milk_shopp is the stuff dreams are made of. We really enjoy it when we go somewhere and the food really is ten ten tens across the board. The Milk Shop is very unassuming, very laid back and there’s an AC inside to shield yourself from this ridiculous Abuja heat. Also, Francesca is a gem. She was very kind and very helpful and when there were many people you could tell she was overwhelmed but she was never short or abrasive when speaking with customers. The caramel frappe at @the_milk_shopp is my current favourite sweet caffeine kick. Not sure what coffee they use but it is very delicious and sweetness of the cream and the caramel is perfect for when you absolutely need a rush of sugar and caffeine (which, let’s face it, is everyday because adulting is hard). The last time I went, the frappe wasn’t available and I can conveniently say that I was truly heartbroken about it but fingers crossed that it’s back! Another random thing I really enjoy about the Milk Shop is their playlist. The country has been a little depressing lately so I’m very happy for this absolute gem of a cafe. @the_milk_shopp has been on my radar for two years and for some reason, I’ve never gone in. I’m so glad I decided to go randomly because this is now easily one of my favourite places to grab a sandwich, breakfast bite or coffee (even though they only do two types of coffee). This French toast was crunchy on the outside, warm and fluffy on the inside and the cream on the side was actually divine. I think the most hilarious part of @canesandlemons_abuja’s menu is that it tries to upgrade meal names to make up for its price because there is no way anyone with a personal value for money in this economy is going out to spend N11k for fried rice plantain and breaded chicken 😂 This is what the Tori Katsa with Dirty Rice is. I saw Tori Katsa and instantly thought of the Katsu curry from Wagamama and when the dish came out I was proud of myself for not being too far off 😌 This meal would have been much better with seasoned panko for the chicken but the little curry you’re given on the side helps a lot. The rice has more flavour than anything else on the plate and no one is really sure what the smashed plantain is doing but it’s provocative ✨ Canes and Lemons really is one of those places with zero replay value. You go once, you have a terrible time, you tell your friends not to go, they decide to go and also have a terrible time and tell you that there were rats scurrying about when they went. Dears. She doesn’t look like much but this is the best thing on the @canesandlemons_abuja menu. Slow cooked short ribs and a chimichurri mash. The waiter brought out this dish for one person on the table and the others on the table had to wait another hour to get their food. Speaking to him, we noted that the waiting time between receiving food was actually ridiculous and he said “it was have been somehow complicated to microwave this meal if we didn’t serve it once it was done.” Fair? Simply because ALL my friends and I haven’t stopped talking about this dish. The Shrimp Aglio Olio is everything she promises to be and more. Squid Ink pasta mixed with garlic, olive oil and chilli flakes is all it takes to create this incredible dish and @gusto_abuja knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they added this dish to the menu. The pasta is cooked perfectly al dente, the flavours are simple and the shrimp is fresh and flavourful. It is easily the best thing on the menu. The dynamite shrimp was our favourite thing at Shogan Restaurant so we thought we’d try it out at @gusto_abuja. Long story short, it was good, it just wasn’t AS good and for that price? When I was younger I used to look forward to going out to dinner with my mum and dad because they would order these sizzling plates at Chinese restaurants and it would absolutely blow my mind. Now I’m older and realise that these plates cost money and lmao let’s just thank God for childhood experiences 😂 The Chicken Ginger Onion sizzling plate from @shogan_ng is a pretty decent main dish. Stir fry shredded chicken with onions and ginger served on a lot sizzling pan is always a good shout. The chicken fried rice, on the other hand, was bland as hell. The ginger onion chicken sauce makes it better but on its own it’s really not good. Overall, the food here is decent, the space itself is very Sinclair-Cantina-esque but the service is pretty bad. The true star pictured here is the half eaten plate of dynamite shrimp at the top. It was so good we ordered it twice! The shrimp is crispy and tasty and that bang bang sauce it’s covered in is delicious. The Hot and Sour Chicken soup from Shogan is a recommended dish for mushroom lovers. The soup is good but it was just missing that hit of msg that makes Asian food phenomenal. And honestly, the same thing goes for the Singaporean Noodles pictured. Being a big fan of the Discovery Museum in Art Tech District, I saved @lagosbistro for the last @lostinabuja12 + MasterCard Restaurant Week visit. What a terrible idea. The waitress was not really keen on showing me the menu for dinner, and I should have known this was a sign because the dinner options are very……..sparse. Anyway, I picked from the only two areas where you have a choice to make, appetiser and main, and was looking forward to enjoying my fish peppersoup until I was presented with a rather large bowl of goat meat peppersoup and a squished bread roll.
