So, there is this facebook page called Bodybuilders Against Tipping (BAT as I will abbreviate to). What I have read off of it is just disgusting.
I know there have been times when many have not wanted to tip their waiter/waitress because of bad service, or when you just don’t have enough to give as a tip. But other times, most times for me, I always tip. I know how hard it is to pay for things especially when most waiters/waitresses are late teens to early/mid-twenties in high school/college trying to pay for things. And with the economy the way things are its even harder.
Sure there is financial aid for college but sometimes it just doesn’t pull through, like it didn’t with me. I have a cousin who was actually told if she were to become pregnant she would be covered for financial aid better since she would be a single mom (but that is a topic for another day). But my point is, while so many are denied financial aid and scholarships they must pay another way, either by parents that can help out or on their own by working. Most times in a restaurant (fast food or otherwise).
Those three are from a few people I know. Their names are crossed out to because it was asked.
To continue, those that can’t get help from the government must then find an alternate source of income to pay for an education that is essential for this country. What else can they do but look to fast food places and little restaurants where they rely on tips and their paychecks to pay for school or just to live.
BAT are chauvinist pigs that (from the way I read their page) think its funny and okay to not tip their waiter/waitress. For the average waiter/waitress they make about (roughly) $2,000 a month, not counting tips. Now when I went to college for one semester in September of 2011 until December 2011 my semester cost me just under (about $200 under) $2,000. If you add in housing - either on campus or an apartment, an apartment has bills such as gas/electricity, water, sewage, garbage, recycle, etc… - then food, clothes (for a regular day and work), transportation from school and work, and school supplies it will add up. With tips (some making about $600 others about $10) you could buy a textbook for school or a quick snack for a lunch break.
BAT thinks that serving is not real skill and that is should be made illegal around the world.
They say they are the ‘Rosa Parks’ of their generation. Rosa Parks refused to move from her seat on a bus because she believed she shouldn’t have to. She was an African-American woman living in the United States where everyone should be free. She had been asked to give up her seat in the colored section of the bus to a white passenger after the white section had been filled. I do not see how a civil right to sit where a person wants is linked with not tipping your server who - despite what sort of day they are having or how others have treated them during their work day - try to be happy and give a good service so they not only keep their job but may be tipped.
One thing I saw on their page that enraged me was this person, Kevin Butler:
I do not know where they ate and I give thanks to the people that left the tip and server who had patience or the endurance to give a service that warranted the twelve dollars, but to see someone would blatantly take someone’s tip with no remorse makes me sick.
I agree with Trey here, servers may not be in school but trying to care for their family and when someone takes a $12 tip that could be used for a meal for that family you are scum of the earth.
Those are some other examples of what is found on the page. I would like to CHALLENGE BAT to become a server for six months. You are not to have any access to your bank accounts and the only money you get are from the paychecks from the restaurant and tips you earn, let’s just hope no one takes your tip. You will have to continue with the lifestyle you live, going to the gym, eating out at restaurants and buying all the things you normally would and we will see how far you really can get. If you can make it past the first day of working that is. Serving is harder than it looks.
