🌾trace my art, copy it, study it, make your own prints of my drawings and books at home, use my art as your icon/background/etc without asking, use whatever you like as inspiration. i do not care about copyright, i do not care about IP or art theft & i do not see those as legitimate issues to give a fuck about. this is not sarcasm. have FUN. stop asking my permission for these things YOU DO NOT NEED PERMISSION from any artist to do these. only thing you can't do is tag my art any variation of #honse without me blocking you. and if i have blocked you i expect you to respect that boundary and move on.
🌾i make a lot of art with Christian and specifically Catholic themes as i am interested in that, but don't get it twisted. i am a Christ Hater and god isn't real

Pay me no mind if someone has asked this before, but how did you "get into" creature design? As in, how did you begin to practice and learn and get comfortable? Have you always had an aptitude for it? I've recently gained quite a fascination with birds specifically, and I want to begin incorporating them into my art. However, im currently struggling a bit since I'm only well-versed in drawing humans.
Now technically I kind of already know that the standard answer to any "how learn 2 draw🤔?" question rlly just boils down to "study the subject and practice consistently". But hearing (or i guess reading) individual artists' journeys regarding these things rather than generalized one-size-fits-all advice has always been much more useful and interesting to me.
The way you draw creatures, especially horses, is so...evocative? Authentic? Full of life? I'm not sure what word or phrase to use here. But theyre also so uniquely YOU. I'd love to be able to achieve something like that soon with my art of non-humans. I'd just really like to get over the "it looks like it was poorly copied from an encyclopedia" learning phase as fast as i can lol.
I guess an abridged version of this ask would be: what did your pathway in learning to draw horses (and birds) look like? From initially starting out, to getting the hang of it, to stylization and being able to draw them without having to rely on references? Is there anything you experienced/had access to that made it easier or harder?
Much love from a long time admirer of your work!! ^_^ hope your day is going beautifully.
haha hello i see you went on a whole journey while i was away. well listen I'm glad you found the ask I answered because i genuinely don't remember posting it at all and wouldn't have been able to point you to it lmao
but i can answer your more specific questions:
what did your pathway in learning to draw horses (and birds) look like? i decided to draw more horses after i began writing mvf and realised i had to learn to draw those damn horses lol. i wasn't very good at it (and i still have a lot to learn)
my issue was in the limbs. they're long and thin and there's a temptation to make them out of angles, and i see a lot of people doing this but i always found it a bit too angular and not lifelike enough.
this is the first drawing of félix i ever did where he is 100% a horse. the limbs are kinda messed up and i covered them in long feathering to hide that i didn't know how the joints worked lol but you can see the hooves are not the prettiest. He looks like he's floating or tip-toeing, not planted on the ground. So I decided I would try to incorporate more curved naturalistic shapes and also ban myself from feathering so that i would be forced to learn to make those joints read well
compare to my centaur character from like 2 days ago (most recent horse drawing):
it's still not perfect. but i think there is a better sense of weight and follow-through. i draw the muscle groups in the base sketch as well which helps round out the form. that one above was drawn without references, as you can tell, because i was lazy. idk what's going on with the front legs either
i did a lot of these from videos. for the more difficult angles i would trace the sketch from a screenshot of the video, then draw my own lines over it. I am still no good at hooves I'll fully admit that, I need to especially improve at how the weight changes the pastern angle. but yeah they ARE stylised, of course, but that's how ended up 'solving' my distaste for the highly angular looks they had before. Horses are a bouba animal (and cows are kiki). with these different characters i also have to decide how their horse halves look (pascal is Tall, the others more pony-esque, and this changes their proportions accordingly)
Yeah lots to work on still, not perfect etc etc, but I think you can see that the way I got the hang of it was to become overly invested in an AU of my characters
as for horse faces and heads... well I have a leg-up there because I was an equestrian for 9 years and i know how they move first-hand, so that's definitely my "something i experienced to which made it easier" lol. In this drawing of Félix I specifically chose a pained and stressed expression, which is conveyed through the tension around the lips, the folds of skin showing the bit being pulled on harshly, the extreme angle of the head, etc. in this drawing of Pascal i put a very tense and threatening horse in the background and even though this one isn't heavy with lines and wrinkles, you can convey this easily by using the floppy lips and bared teeth and the wild eye. the mouth area is very loose and doesn't betray much of what the skull looks like underneath so you can make angry and aggressive expressions easily by exploiting the contrast of the soft tissue and hard teeth. i always give horses their normal herbivore incisor teeth because I am a firm believer that horse teeth are more than dangerous enough as-is, and i don't need to give them dog mouths to make them look aggressive or threatening! (<- pet peeve lol. a horse with horse teeth will bite you harder and more catastrophically than a horse with dog teeth, this i guarantee)
i just love them a lot, but i ALSO have a lot of respect for them. i think that helps. i don't find them inherently comedic or funny, i think they are beautiful and expressive and very fun to draw
as for birds!!! well i just love wings so much and (in contrast to how expressive horses can be in the face area) i love the harsh and almost expressionless look of a bird's face and beak. i think you have to really like something to want to draw it over and over lol. IF you want a good place to find animal reference images (a little harder if it's wild animals instead of horses lol) you can go to iNaturalist or ebird. tracing them is fine, trace them for as long as you need
i think it's fun how you're starting from a drawing-humans point because it's the opposite for me. i was drawing animals long before i even tried drawing people. but the process was kinda the same... you have to love and respect the subject in some deep way. otherwise you wouldn't pour hours into it. i stylise humans the same way (rounded forms, sparing lines) as my animals because i like how it looks. i think if you just extend your human art ethos instead of thinking of birds as some completely other universe, it could help.
p.s thank you for the note on the phone case lol. i actually got my own one from redbubble back when that was a thing because inprnt didn't carry ones for the humble samsung s22 user. the quality was not good, the print rubbed off after about two years and it became illegible. so i'm glad yours is still going strong. currently i no longer offer plastic products (as much as possible) in my print shop, including acrylic block prints which were an option in inprnt before. i think it's important not to create unnecessary waste, but when the product already exists, it's good to try and wrangle as much use out of it as possible :>
I hope this isn’t overly personal but if it is feel entirely free to ignore/delete but I just rlly appreciate how you talk about your experience in and then moving away from ‘the furry fandom’ as well as how you talk about intentionally with the creative process in general. I’m having a bit of a furry crisis of faith lately in that it was the art that I wanted to make and repressed for a very long time and once I began letting myself make it freely it felt like a community and style that could support what I really needed to express at the time intertwined with the media that got me through very hard times in adolescence like pokemon but I am a, bigger kid now and the sometimes boredom and distaste I have with a lot (certainly not all) of self labeled furry art genuinely felt scary and jarring at first just because I’d put such personal stake into it. Reading ur few asks talking abt ur history with it made me able to take in my feelings a lot better and the knowledge I wasn’t alone in the feeling or at least a version of it helped me take the leap to experiment with different styles and art I wasn’t letting myself make before. I don’t think I will fully leave anthro animal art or the community behind for a long time if ever, there is a part of me that still feels my truest in making it, but your stuff has been my primary inspiration lately and it’s felt good to let myself branch out. I think I am just growing up?
i think you are too, that's what happened to me - i don't really think it was any great revelation or character altering moment for me or anything, i think i just grew up. when you are younger (especially a teenager) and you are still trying to differentiate yourself and form an identity, you grab onto labels and incorporate your interests into your identity. so that when your interests change or move on, it feels like a strike against who you are, and like you're losing or even betraying yourself. in a few years you look back and wonder what all the fuss was about

I wanted to ask! What brush did you use for the detail work on the "look what's become of me" Twist piece? the veiny trees and wrinkly skin looks so good
hiya! i used a few brushes in that one in the course of figuring out how to get the technique right. the base painting was default round paint brush (all of this is in procreate), and the plants were default gouache. i wasn't too happy with how it was coming out and wanted a more blended look so i tried the Hard Blend airbrush and that worked really well. the veiny trees and skin folds were done using that airbrush. i think all the brushes were default procreate brushes
you can see here the more textured gouache brush under the smoother hard blend airbrush squiggles
I've added a print link to this one since it's popular and I thought I could create a slightly altered and bolder colour profile which would look nice printed
This is a gallery-quality giclée art print on 100% cotton rag archival paper, printed with archival inks.

The way you explain your drawing processes and the way you give tutorials and art advice is very succinct and personally I think the powers that be should give you ten million dollars for that.
thank you, that's very kind :> i have moved away from making outright tutorials since i don't think they are particularly educational (i am not formally trained or an art teacher, much better resources are widely available in print), but i am always happy to explain how i did something & share my materials and methods.
This was actually my first big illustration for my book. I wanted to do a cover using the working title (which I almost immediately changed.. it’s different now). Features Pantera, Victory, and Mercury
hiya! I love your artwork and was wondering if you had any advice for rendering armor? I've been using references but every time I draw the highlights it feels splotchy or wrong somehow, any advice or books you've studied to learn? Also I thought the way you used greenish highlights in your last artwork was amazing!!
well it's really just practice but i can advise you try drawing from life instead of photo refs. doesn't have to be armour. take a shiny metal something with a curved surface (cooking pot etc) and turn it towards you and away from you. you should observe that the specular highlight (the brightest highlight) never actually changes position. in fact it is always angled relative to the viewer and on the area of the metal that is physically closest to you (the apex of the curve). that means the highlight is not 'closest' to the light source of the drawing, but actually 'closest' to the viewer (imagine it receding from you in 3D space)
draw some pots and pans from life to see how the light interacts with them
composition is something i really struggle with and im obsessed with the way you frame everything with like extra elements (idk how to describe it, like the borders and text and extra bits) and im also obsessed with the way you use negative space in your compositions when you do that. do you have any advice for improving? I have The Ideas for full pieces but every time i attempt to thumbnail the composition is boring as hell.
runs away with suspiciously your art shaped throat
hey get back here with that!!
i wrote a little bit about how i approach composition in this answered ask here and it's more or less the same but tbh these days i'm less into vertical composition like a lot of these. nowadays i just throw whatever on there haha

I love the shading of the left face on your new piece! Is the design based on any specific kind of mask?
Not particularly, I mostly searched for lion or leopard statues and door knockers for reference because actual historical lion-faced helmets have eye holes and the like. This helmet has no eye holes, just air holes
