Dear America
After watching Hillary's concession speech, I just had to write this very last piece about this entire election.
I cried.
Every single word she said resonated so much pain and frustration. Her speech was so honest, pure, and entirely and utterly heartbreaking. It truly baffled me why this woman was robbed of the presidency.
To lose to a qualified man with clear policies was one thing, but to do so to one who had NO clear policies (based on his website, debate, and interview questions) with NO political background on how to deal with the problems America is currently experiencing makes this defeat a tougher pill to swallow.
This person built his campaign on hate and bigotry and judging from the responses online from his supporters, it seems his win has brought out the devil's work into human form, allowing people the ability and right to harass and taunt people who are different from them. All this hate and vitriol he managed to set off (just on Day 1, mind you) is so heartbreaking to see and hear, I just had to step out for a walk in the cold night.
I needed to see the America that Hilary envisioned. One that is free from discrimination and intolerance. I have met and befriended so many people from different races, ethnicities, color, sex, gender in this city, and I could see the love they have for this country and for the people in it. Love that shares none of the close-mindedness that this president-elect possesses. And New York, you did not fail me. I saw people (whites, blacks) discussing the sadness of the outcome. I saw restaurants and cafes with signs like, "Closing early. We are attending the anti-Trump rally at Union Square 6-9pm. Join us!" Seeing these rallies and a number of people in them on the news made me hopeful. You weren't going to give into this bullshit.
I'm not American, but America I feel your pain. Fight back stronger. Don't give into hate. Don't let the light and love of New York or any of the other great cities in the United States fade away because of this. After all, love trumps hate.
