Warnings: angst, happy ending, gn reader, Kiba being an idiot (??), friends to lovers, bad english bc it's not my first language and some curses.
a/n: after posting my first one shot here (click here if u want see), i saw that a lot of people liked it and decided to post more ;) thanks for the support. Please don't hate me, I know Kiba is a baby!!
"Sequin smile, black lipstick
Sensual politics
When you are young, they assume you know nothing"
You were brilliant, the kind of person anyone wanted to be. Counting on your fingers you didn't know how many people were in love with you, but Kiba claimed there were so many. Nobody came to you, really. It never bothered you after all, even though that huge line of people your best friend said was waiting for you did exist, you just wanted to know if he included himself among all those people.
Most likely not, after all Kiba was the real boy with many girls waiting for him, the big difference is that everyone knew about his affairs with random girls.
"But I knew you
Dancin' in your Levi's
Drunk under a streetlight, I"
You tried to avoid it, but your thoughts had no control when it came to Kiba. It was like you felt superior to every other person when it came to him.
Even because you were the one who helped him take care of Akamaru, who spent the weekends having fun with the Inuzuka and pulling him into a weird Konoha's karaoke. You were the one who made him dance under the voice of strangers, you who made him laugh out loud and didn't need tricks to fall in love like other girls.
Kiba didn't have to be what you wanted him to be, he already was, the person who listened to all your shit, who cheered you on more than anything when you needed it.
You were the person he praised and found a way to think of various provocations.
""No way!" You laughed at the jokes of your best friend, who was drunk on the way back home, after going to the bar that some old guys were singing.
"That guy looked like he had a stuffy nose while singing" Kiba commented, chuckling to himself.
"I think I was worse than him!" You protested, crossing your arms.
"I love watching you sing. You sound so graceful!" He crossed his arms too, disagreeing with you.
Under the konoha's lights, Kiba's flushed cheeks seemed to fit in with the scenery, you felt like saving that moment in a photograph. He'd never looked so handsome, looking at you out of the corner of his eye embarrassed after the compliment he'd given to you.
He thinks you're graceful."
"I knew you
Hand under my sweatshirt
Baby, kiss it better, I"
Things ended badly.
Maybe it was a happily ever after, a beginning. You swore it could be something.
They say that our cells remember touch, tastes and help with our memory. Neither you and Kiba remembered how it all ended, the only thing the cells allowed you to remember was his touch, pressing you against the wall as he kissed your lips.
And you knew deep down that the beginning of the end happened when Kiba touched your face that night. It was almost like a prophecy, and you knew you would regret it soon.
"And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone's bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite"
It wasn't like he wasn't the best person for you. He was, but while you loved him from afar, Kiba was kissing other person. Why would you be any different?
Even if all of Kiba's best memories were with you, what kept him there?
Was it because he made you smile when you were sad? Was it because when you didn't want to leave the house and cried with your problems he helped and took care of you? But what if you were the only person who missed him when he was away?
" "That shouldn't have happened, I'm sorry." That's what you said, after kissing him.
"I agree, I think that was a mistake."
"Chase two girls, lose the one
When you are young, they assume you know nothing"
And the end of the story finally happened not long after.
You were walking around konoha when you saw him with one of his arms around a girl's shoulders, she was laughing out loud at Kiba. You didn't know her, but you knew all his friends.
"You're one of the best guys I've ever dated" the words she said were clear to you. And even though he saw you, you didn't stop to greet him, you didn't stop to look him in the face.
"But I knew you
Playing hide-and-seek and
Giving me your weekends, I
I knew you
Your heartbeat on the High Line
Once in twenty lifetimes, I"
Kiba was your best friend, it was obvious that you knew him, it was obvious that he would do that. Even if he didn't want to hurt you.
Your body reacted instinctively, and your memory fails to remember the events that happened after that. You barely remember his face as he apologizes for complicating things.
You don't remember what he said, you don't remember the words that paralyzed him. You don't remember how you left, or how you woke up the next day.
Now, as you read one of your favorite novels, it was like your brain erased the bad memories that surrounded the last time you saw Kiba. Only the good memories remained, like amnesia.
The truth is, you avoided remembering, didn't want to remember the day your best friend broke your heart.
You loved him, but he couldn't do the same, in the end only you waited for him.
"Resting after training always pleased you. And there you were, lying on Kiba's chest while giving affection and snacks to Akamaru, who barked in thanks.
The clouds that formed in the sky made you think, and the familiar rhythm of Kiba's heart brought you calm. You were at peace.
"I think the training was good." The Inuzuka spoke in a soft voice, and your heart sped up at the familiar closeness.
Akamaru pushed you and the Inuzuka separating the two bodies to snuggle between you and Kiba.
"Akamaru!" "
"You drew stars around my scars
But now I'm bleedin'"
You put the book down on your desk, unable to read anymore.
He missed you?
A sigh left your lips. Obviously not, he would look for you if he had.
You would be fine, you could move on. You could forget about him, even if it meant you would disappear from your group of friends temporarily.
It was weird not having him there, he promised he'd always be with you and your open wounds.
"'Cause I knew you
Steppin' on the last train
Marked me like a bloodstain, I
I knew you
Tried to change the ending
Peter losing Wendy, I
I knew you"
Even if he tried to keep you. Even if he tried to change the end of things, you were there alone.
Even if he was like a tattoo, branding you with difficulty getting out. Even though your body had already memorized the feeling of having him around, you were there, with an unfinished novel, looking at the table without any emotion.
Kiba was an event, a big event that you didn't know you were invited to.
And he lost you.
"But I knew you'd linger like a tattoo kiss
I knew you'd haunt all of my what-ifs
The smell of smoke would hang around this long
'Cause I knew everything when I was young
I knew I'd curse you for the longest time"
" "Do you love me?" He asked with a worried expression.
" What if I love? " His voice sounded defensive. "You won't reciprocate, I know you don't."
"I just..." He didn't finish the sentence. "We can work it out, we can... I don't know."
You couldn't solve anything.
"I don't think I can stay here anymore" "
You felt stupid most of the time, felt stupid for still wanting Kiba's lips against yours. You felt stupid for falling in love with him, felt like a joke when he couldn't reciprocate what you felt.
You hated him. You still hated him.
Hated missing him, hated wanting him even after all this time.
You wanted to yell at Inuzuka, you wanted to say what was bothering you, you wanted to say that he was the problem.
He was your problem that bothered you like a noisy insect bothers someone trying to sleep.
Kiba was the noise in your silence.
"I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired
And you'd be standin' in my front porch light
And I knew you'd come back to me
You'd come back to me
And you'd come back to me
And you'd come back"
The noise your bedroom balcony made startled you. You got up right away, running to see what was going on. The only thing that stopped you was the dog barking that was familiar.
"Akamaru, you're going to wake everyone up" Kiba's voice sounded next.
He looked like a mirage, a figment of your imagination. He could be a clone made by an enemy.
He could be everything, but he couldn't be real
"Kiba." You called out to him in a calm voice, and your heart raced as you approached him. The window was unlocked enough for you to get through.
"Hey." That's what he said, sounding as nervous as you are.
"You need anything?" You asked, your voice betraying your commands, it was as if you were no longer in control. "I was just going to sleep."
"Sorry to interrupt." He sounded like a stranger, but he was face to face with you, in that same old way. "I wanted to talk to you."
"For what?" Your answer was short, your eyes no longer looked at Inuzuka's face.
You wanted to hug him, tell him you missed him, that you didn't care if he didn't reciprocate what you felt.
You couldn't go a day without the banal affairs at dawn, you couldn't live without the morning walks you took with him and Akamaru, or the corny jokes he made when he drank.
You couldn't live without your best friend anymore. It was unbearable not being able to talk to him anymore, not being able to vent about his wounds, not being able to make fun of his idiotic sense of smell.
Kiba seemed to hold his breath, seemed to think why he was there. You waited for his answer, which didn't come.
"I need to go to sleep." You warned, walking away. "Tell me tomorrow, who knows."
"No, please, I promise I'll be quick." Kiba asked, being accompanied by a bark of agreement. You stopped, and just waited for him to take action.
"So?"
"I miss you. I..." Kiba's hands moved nervously, he didn't look at your face, He took a deep breath in an attempt to calm down. "I'm sorry for everything that happened, I wish I could have reciprocated. I didn't want you to leave..."
Before he could finish, your hands encircled his body, hugging him.
"It doesn't matter." You said. "It's okay, I miss you too."
"I shouldn't have let all this happen. I felt so scared." Kiba's voice whispered. "I wish I had fixed things sooner."
"You had no way of fixing things." You spoke in a muffled voice, still hugging your friend.
"I could! I like you too, I've always loved you, but I was so scared of it all, I didn't know until I missed you these last few days" He sighed, squeezing you tighter in his embrace, as if it were a relief to have you there. "I can't take another day without you."
