I think it's a disservice to Hal and Thaisha as characters to talk about their relationship to each other as some sort of uncomplicated ideal of long-distance polyamory. And even more of a disservice to treat it as though it won't (and hasn't already) grow and change over the course of the story.

Like, I've already made a post about the caution and fragility in their relationship in the Overture. So, I'm just rehashing myself a little. But there is a lot of awkwardness and uncertainty in that relationship when we are introduced to it. And a lot of grief, at least on Hal's part, in Thaisha's coming and going. Liam and Aabria are also very clear that Hal and Thaisha don't have sex, or even share a bed, the night of the funeral (despite that perhaps being a natural time for them for them to want some kind of physical comfort). It's clear from minute one how much they still love each other. It's deeply unclear, both to the audience and, based on all available evidence, to the characters themselves, what their boundaries with each other should be and what the nature of their relationship really is.

I think that, as Hal has been drawn more and more into the thick of the violence, we've seen them lean more into the positives of their relationship when they are together. It's a great source of comfort and strength for them both. And Thaisha's realizations during Kothar'ai feel like a potential turning point in their dynamic (she's proud of her family now as much as of her family in the past; she and Hal have always had the same calling). But all canonical evidence I can see (both reunions, the careful way they talk about the Round and how long Thaisha will stay, Hal's reaction to Thjazi bringing Thaisha up) indicates to me that this is a relationship that has a lot of hurt feelings buried alongside the love. And it feels very clear to me in the Overture that Liam and Aabria set this dynamic up as one to be explored and to have change (in whatever direction makes sense) over the course of the campaign. And I just don't love the approach I feel like I mostly see, which seems to treat the relationship as one the audience doesn't have to think about. One that can be comfortably shoved away in a little box that occasionally gets pulled out to say, "aren't we all so into unconventional open relationships!" before being shoved away again
