A successful adaptation must follow the original:
Characterisation
Vibe
Plot
In that order of significance.
If the plot is different, you get an interesting alternate universe.
If the vibe (and perhaps the plot) is different, you get a visionary re-imagining.
If the characterisation is different — even when all else is ostensibly right, you get a sacrilege.
(Yes, I've just had the dubious experience to "appreciate" for myself a truly abysmal example of this principle in action. The original story is to that adaptation like the Reims Cathedral to an office block.)
