the side A/side B lake scenes in deltarune chapter 5 have such well-executed contrasting visuals. Susie picking Noelle up and carrying her as she walks into the lake so Noelle never touches the water VS Noelle dragging Kris into the lake with her and causing both of them to drown. Susie asking Noelle if she wants her to stop before walking into the lake VS Noelle pulling Kris with her even if the player commands them to stop. Noelle deciding that if she's with Susie, staying in this town isn't so bad VS Noelle demanding that Kris help her cross the lake. I really like how those 2 scenes contrast

not sure how i feel about people's framing of the tragedy that is susie viewing castle town as her home. because it IS tragic that this kid has been failed so badly by her family and home town that she doesnt view either as her home, but like it feels like people are framing the tragedy as "isn't it tragic that she finds comfort in fantasy? in places and people who are not real?" and like.. no? because despite everything that ralsei says the dark worlds are real, the people there are real. regardless of her circumstances she has found community among darkners, people similarly disregarded by the light world. thats not tragic! its pretty sweet actually!
see, i think it comes from a misreading of why the fun gang needed to close asgores darkworld. Mostly because i keep seeing this take next to people talking about how he was lost in the fantasy of it when in actuality he wasnt engaging in the fantasy or with the darkners of it at all. The flower king dark world needed to be closed because ralsei claims too many darkworlds will bring about the roaring, the crux of the issue in chapter 5 was if the flowers deserved to live when living put the world in danger, not fantasy=bad. If fantasy was meant to be bad, why then is so much emphasis put on us recruiting darkners to get better endings? The tragedy of the flowers was that they couldnt be brought to castle town because of their delicate nature!
I also think susie living in the darkworld, seeing it as her home, is similarly related to this because unlike asgore she does see and treat the darkners in castle town with respect and love, she treats them not as objects but as friends she can rely on! and they want to help her, even if they are not always the best at it. (Swatchs line, her not liking most of the outfit options) it all comes from a place of love for her.
I've seen the theories that the game is setting up for the lightner kids to need to move on from the darkners and darkworld, but for all my complaints about how i think flowerys ending fell flat it was clearly trying to invoke sympathy for his plight. And atp an ending like that is not where i think the game is headed, it would require spitting in the face of Ralsei's entire character arc including the one she had in chapter 5 re: having her own desires as well as what was set up with the flowers having their own dreams.
This is a great post. To add something: I think one real element of tragedy is that the Dark World literally can’t sustain her. Ralsei desperately wants to feed Susie and Kris, but even though the friendship is real, the cakes will never be filling. Dark World food isn’t real. She can’t really move into Castle Town properly because she would go hungry. (Even more so than she already was in Hometown.)
But I think narrative-wise that’s more of an obstacle Susie and Ralsei are struggling against, part of Deltarune’s defying fate/striving for impossible dreams theming, than a metaphor for Castle Town or Darkner friendship being emotionally insubstantial.
