evangelism/outreach/whatever you want to call it etc is obviously a v hot topic issue w progressive christians not only bc of colonialism but also bc of personal religious trauma from (often) being exvangelical, and i get that and think it's an area to be seriously re-evaluated (and i do think its important to deconstruct the heavy emphasis on evangelism from evangelical spaces, especially the idea that it is every christian's #1 priority)
with that said, i think the kneejerk reaction against outreach in any form that i sometimes see can seem extremely naive and impractical. like. every organisation does some kind of outreach. even within judaism, a famously non-proselytising religion, there are still groups that try to reach out to non-practising Jews and reconnect them with their faith. the local board games club advertises itself. sports teams need members to thrive.
that does not need to be some sinister ulterior motive. yes, religion does carry more weight than just sports teams and is intwined with culture, issues of autonomy etc - your church doing outreach is not just the same as trying to get people to join your sewing club. but i think sometimes people overreact against evangelicalism and promote a 'let them just find us' approach that i think is just frankly unrealistic for any organisation.
of course, i dont then mean churches (or other religions for that matter) should be out street preaching and doorknocking. but i think finding ways to invite in is important and worthwhile - rather than either 'let's sit here and people will come to us because we're so cool and epic' or trying to seduce/coerce/lure people in.
even with just normal social events, i find it often feels more welcoming and enticing to be explicitly invited than just invited to a nebulous FB event or get @ ed in a group chat. that's not true for everyone, nor is it true in every circumstance, and it is definitely not without its baggage in religious circles. it is something to think carefully about.
i just think when people propose that places of worship just sit around and decline because if theyre truly worthy people will just show up - which is not true of any initiative of any kind - it seems very naive. it would be more honest to say 'i think outreach is too fraught and too morally risky to even try' than to suggest that actually, it's being pragmatic to do nothing.
also, it essentially cedes the ground to the religious organisations that ARE out there outreaching with zero qualms. and of course if they are willing to use unethical tactics that disrespect people's autonomy and invoke fear of hellfire then in some regards they will see success that people with principles don't -but ceding the entire field to them is i think also not helpful. anyway, just some musings. feel free to disagree but please be nice
i just wanted to tell you guys that as a trans christian, trying to find an affirming church has been an incredibly eye opening experience. the amount of baby boomers and gen x people i've seen in these churches proudly supporting LGBTQ+ people and not just loving them "despite their sin" but acknowledging that queer love ISN'T a sin has been such a breath of fresh air. there's older people out there that are affirming, guys. there is a certain point where it comes down to a generational thing and general cultural ignorance (still not an excuse!) but there are so many older people who are actively affirming or at the very least genuinely trying in their church communities. makes me very happy to see.
"Really? You think a trans person would go to church?"
Why not? Would you deny a persons relationship with God simply because of what they identify as? Anyone is free to love and worship God regardless of who they are.
Happy Pride month to all of my fellow Queer people, and also to my fellow Queer Muslims! I assure you that your faith and your queerness are not opposites running in different directions. You are not a contradiction, nor are you a hypocrite. We all have the right to be our truest selves and keep our faith. I love you and I am forever rooting for you!!

“For there are wicked scoundrels among my people
who, like fowlers, set traps, but with men as their quarry.
Like a cage full of birds, their houses are full of treachery.
As a result, they have grown rich and powerful, well fed and well groomed.
Their wickedness knows no bounds, and they do not practice justice in their dealings.
They do not uphold the rights of the orphan or defend the cause of the needy.
How can I fail to punish such things? says the Lord.
How can I refuse to exact vengeance on a nation such as this?
An appalling and outrageous situation has occurred in the land.
The prophets prophesy falsely, the priests are in league with them, and the people are delighted with this situation.
But when the end comes, what will you do?”
- Jeremiah 5:26-31
what he says: I’m fine
what he means: Jesus crucified and Jesus resurrected must both be proclaimed and the tendency of our culture to remove one or the other completely is a scary indication of the deadly polarization that is occurring. Mercy and justice are one and the same; to proclaim justice alone with no mercy is to bar people from entering the faith and to proclaim mercy alone with no justice is to distill the faith until it becomes little more than an aesthetic. To take away Jesus’s cross is to rob Him of His throne; to ignore His resurrection is to forget His victory.
As a queer Catholic, I’m used to being painfully stabbed in the chest by fellow Christians.
That’s why this Pride Month, I’m partnering with the Sacred Heart of Jesus
I never really thought about before how when God is teaching Jonah about mercy and he gives him that plant and then the plant is withered by the sun and Jonah liked that plant, he’s so angry! And God says are you angry Jonah? And Jonah says angry enough to die!
Never thought about how in that parallel God compares the plant to people, which makes Jonah in God’s role. Angry enough at the destruction of humanity—to die
God sent Jonah to Nineveh the enemy of his people to preach repentance and Jonah’s so mad because he wanted God to be angry at Nineveh, unleash his wrath, get rid of the enemy. And God’s response is to set up this little plant that Jonah likes and then when it’s blasted away go what are you feeling Jonah? And Jonah says angry!! And all the sudden the anger you thought God should be feeling you see it’s there but it’s anger that *anyone* should be destroyed. It’s anger *for* people. It’s anger that moves people *away* from destruction because at its heart it’s love.
gnawing at the bars of my enclosure about the trinity. you don't understand. you'll never understand. but god is love, an unceasing flow of love between the three divine persons. and when you pray to god the creator you pray to the son and holy spirit. and when you invoke the son's name you call on god the creator and the holy spirit. and when the holy spirit dwells in you, god the creator and the son dwell in you too. the son and the father are one. the consoler is both. you don't understand. i don't understand. we'll never understand. but god is love, and he is sharing that love with us out of pure goodness, because he is pure goodness.

Considering your URL, I should tell you about the nightmare I had last night.
In it, today Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan both died (the former partly because of a curse by witches placed in 2017), and so I was praying the O God of Spirits and of All Flesh for them, when the ghost of Chappell Roan appeared to me. I made the sign of the cross to test if it was the real ghost of Chappell Roan or a demon pretending to be her, and the apparition fled, showing it to be the latter, which disturbed me so much I went outside to the garden to continue praying.
OH NO 😭 that is really scary
I do really love that prayer. It's so compassionate and it put me at peace reading it, thank you so much for sharing
It does bother me a little bit when people call esoteric works like the Book of Revelation "incomprehensible". It's not! It's just esoteric! It was written by real people for materially comprehensible reasons!
The underlying message of apocalyptic literature as a social technology is geopolitical. It says "don't worry; God has a plan."

Shout out to Acts 2:14-15, the funniest two verses in the Bible. "We're not drunk, it's 9am. Catch us at 9pm tho you know what I'm saying?"
