My favorite panel <3 First post :P
There is something in my head
In retrospect, it's hilarious that Stratt made everybody on the vat speak English in deference to Grace being monolingual
Because with how quickly Grace was able to pick up Eridian, even with literally NOTHING about it being familiar the way a human language would be, they probably could have chosen Mandarin as the universal language on Stratt's Vat and he would have just. Learned it.
The problem with the "all CB characters are white" debate is that people only see it as black and white.
Yes, the majority of the cast are white and most of them are related so let's say they weren't.
Let's start from grandpa Ralph, he was on the military and is seen as a loving yet strict person. If he was black then people would say that he was the stereotype of aggressive black men.
Chase's mom is sick and I'm pretty sure there's also a stereotype that black women are always sick.
Deacon's mom was seen as mean and oppressive, that would also play into the mean woc stereotype.
For the Hollow family to be black, the whole story would have to be rewritten to be less offensive.
Let's continue with Nox, he was mean, manipulative and a straight up asshole at the start of the comic. Also his backstory involves him being a homeless thief that would also play into a stereotype.
The old man? If Wave was black and got introduced as a new protagonist of colour, then when the reveal happened then there would be backlash because the villain would be a poc.
Now let's talk about the poc characters we do have and why people miss the point.
People say that the poc characters we have are one dimensional and have negative stereotypes. That's where people confuse "complex character" and "badly written character".
Let's start with Violet. To start things off I am not a fan of her as a person for my own reasons but I'm sick of people undermining her character as just a "mean black girl" to make a point. She is one of the more complex characters in the comic and one of older keys, she sees herself responsible for all her siblings wellbeing in which she failed to protect them in the past. She thinks that showing any kind of weakness is bad so she hides behind a cold mask to protect herself. She doesn't trust humans the same way some people don't trust dogs because they had a bad experience with them. Also let's remember that she's the Villainess key, she will act like a villainess so that means being mean sometimes.
Now let's continue with Bronze. I personally never saw him as lazy, more like laid back. He's probably the smartest key we've met so far and in my opinion the smartest character in the comic. He's so smart to the point where he was suspicious of Nox being someone he knows before even we knew what was going on. He's always calm, collected and he can see right through people. Let me remind you all that he was one of the reasons Deacon got the confidence he has now by giving him advice and pushing him out of his comfort zone. It's weird that Bronze has all those great qualities and people still undermine his character as just "lazy". We would all be lazy if we didn't have to work for a living (I definitely would love to live the life he's having, he has a whole pool and everything).
Next up we have Araniel. And to be honest with you when I saw someone call her "eye candy for Deacon" my blood started to boil because she is one of, if not the best, written storybook characters in the entire comic. For years she had chosen comfort over responsibility, she didn't like her reality and chose to hide from it. At the end though she realised that she was responsible for how she would view her life and chose to step up as a leader. Was her whole arc an allegory for Deacon to realise that he was also in the same boat as her? Yes. Does that make her character less influential? No! I personally related a lot to her struggles and she's one of my favourite story book characters.
"But the whole arc is seen from Deacon's point of view" (<- actual comment I saw to defend the claim that she's badly written). First of all, no. It's not written from Deacon's pov because the whole comic is written in third person. We see all the things that are happening as outsiders. We rarely get to know what the characters are thinking if they don't say it out loud and this arc wasn't one of the times where we listen to the characters inner thoughts.
The archer girl in the "Sick Day" arc? One of the best and fierce warriors of her realm. She wasn't afraid to yell at Deacon for being careless. But according to some people, she's just eye candy for Deacon.
In which let me remind you that Deacon finds all women beautiful. He doesn't care about race. Just because he will simp for every woman he comes across doesn't mean that these women are badly written because Deacon is attracted to them.
Now let's talk about HAT. Many people have a problem with this arc for many reasons in which I agree with a lot of them but let's focus on the prince. All the princes in the comic are described as one dimensional and yet somehow he was the only one that ever mentioned the people he was ruling over and even asked his princess for her opinion.
As for the rapist, yes, that scene made everyone uncomfortable and he's a pos, I'm not gonna defend any of his actions but he's not even the first person to try to assault Chase. Literally in the first episodes of the comic we see Chase punching and slapping princes that made advances on him without consent. Was the scene in HAT just a way for Nox to look like a hero to the audience? Yes. Was it the best decision? No. Should HAT be written more carefully? Also yes.
Every character has flaws, wether they're white, black or any other race. Characters need to have flaws to feel real. Chase, Deacon and Nox all have flaws yet they're still loveable so why is it a problem when Violet and Beonze have flaws? Having a character with no flaws is unrealistic and tbh boring. I would honestly think it would be more offensive for a black character to be perfect than have flaws because they would feel fake and just an inclusivity token.
Punko has aphantasia and is struggling with drawing ethnic features. Does that give her the right to only have white characters in the comic? No. Is she trying to be more inclusive? Yes. Is the inclusivity good? No, but she's trying.
The comic has a problem with the lack of poc protagonists, you'd be stupid if you claimed the opposite because that's a fact. But calling the poc characters we do have badly written to make a point is even more stupid.
Do I find it weird that the only important characters that are poc are in key forms most of the time? Yes.
Would I love a new human character that would be a poc? HECK YES.
Do I agree with the whole debate? I'm 50/50 because people either die hard call the comic racist and problematic or die hard defend it claiming that it's not when in reality it's somewhere in the middle.
I have to say though, it's refreshing that we're able to talk about a serious topic like this without cursing or death threats. It's really nice to see people tell their opinions and be heard and respected without the other side getting super defensive.
Also let me get this straight, it's my opinion and you're allowed to disagree and respectfully comment why
