It was just a little hard to imagine that all Mia Fey wanted to converse with him about was court proceedings, and yet she kept to the topic resiliently. Well, at least it wasn’t something Edgeworth was uncomfortable talking about, at any rate – if it were up to him, they could continue this line of discussion all day.
“Most of the time, yes,” he replied, pursing his lips slightly as he thought. Of course, there was much more to it than the prosecutor, but he supposed it would seem that way to a defense attorney, and especially one such as Mia Fey. This, again, was not an altogether too kind thought towards the woman, but it wasn’t like he had any intentions of voicing his opinion. In truth, a trial’s outcome – the question of whether the truth would or would not be found – often depended on the assisting detectives just as well, the underappreciated ones who did most of the legwork (including keeping nosy defense attorneys in line at crime scenes).
“As a matter of fact,” he added after some pause, “while prosecutors are treated more leniently during trials to an unfair extent, they are also under much greater scrutiny during their work outside the courtroom, Ms. Fey. Unlike defense attorneys, we are public servants – even if all unfairness can be eliminated, our roles and responsibilities will always be different.”
[ That was a clever evasion, at any rate. Truly, Mia had kept to this line of discussion to probe into Edgeworth’s degree of change--that is, to see his opinion in a conversation he found comfortable. Court experience was among her first choices of topics, and it seemed to work well. Edgeworth spoke eloquently, with notable tact as opposed to the candor she once was stung by. ]
[ His answer was fair, she decided. Attributing equal credit to both parties was something she had not thought possible of his younger self. Perhaps a change had taken place, and it was one she welcomed. That obnoxious prosecutor she had known...who would’ve figured he’d mature so much in the span of four years? ]
“I concede that prosecutors have many responsibilities--perhaps, even enough to belie their advantages. However, having all of this heaped upon their shoulders proves that the lead prosecutor is of vital importance. Perhaps, the defense attorney may be able to change the course of the trial, but who gives the opening statement?”
(Speaking of tact, fraulein. You should wear clothes that fit properly, vielleicht.) Alright, that was rude. Just because he is in a bad mood and now this person in her strange garb was making it worse.
“I wonder - are you mad at me because of how I spoke to the defense or the witness, frailein? What I lack in tact I invest in the truth.”
“I see you’ve no problems in convincing yourself of that.”
“I have to ask, was it truly necessary of you to speak to either party with equal rudeness? You may treat a crowd kindly at a concert, but court is another thing entirely. Truth, indeed. Tell me, do you really think that’s what you’re doing every time you stand in court?”
"It's been a long time... Madame Fey." {[ Normal/channeled!Mia, please! Also, hi, mun! <3 ]}
“I’d have preferred the long time to remain indefinite.”
“In meeting you again, that is. Some things never change. Just what is it you’re shooting for this time, Ms. Hawthorne?”
“Surely, you didn’t think we wouldn’t meet again? I may have been defeated, but I won’t give up. I will get my revenge on you, Mia Fey. You’d best remember that.”
“It’s hard to forget it when you’ve been so persistent.”
“Mark my words, Ms. Hawthorne, your plans are doomed to fail like they’ve always been. Your revenge will have to wait. You’ll be defeated for as many times as you try.”

[ @balladoftruth ]
“You don’t really invest much in tact, do you?”
“I find few people care for that these days. It’s sad, really. The fine line between honesty and rudeness...well, I suppose that line’s too thin now. As demonstrated.”
“Well, that’s what happens when a child gets to choose their last name.”
“Just call me Apollo: everyone does.” (Either that or Polly, but I’d rather not have that nickname…)
“The name sounds familiar though…would you happen to be a friend of Mr.Wright?”
“I would be, yes.”
“Good memory, Mr. Justice. I was beginning to wonder when that question would rear its head. Has he mentioned much of me? Or am I being unfair in asking as much?”
“Well if you had been asking much more competent questions instead, maybe I wouldn’t be as annoyed as I currently am!” Eve huffed, clearly irked. Certainly her anger wasn’t all that justified, but seriously, what kind of person asked such common sense questions? She was in high school and even she avoided asking something like that!
‘Some help she’s turning out to be. Is she really an attorney like the ad said?’
“And is arguing your point further going to accomplish anything?”
“There, that’s my competent question for the day. It’s food for thought. Think it over thoroughly, despite your annoyance, and get back to me. Common sense isn’t that hard to find, is it?”
(How did this argument even come about, anyway?)
His frown deepened a little at her reply. Though he didn’t verbally point out the fact, it was clear he now acknowledged the existence of the Fey channeling technique from how he didn’t act confused as to which sister he was currently talking to. However, what he failed to see still was the point of the entire thing – the unhealthy feel of a dead person being called back over and over again. Did Mia Fey not want to rest in peace?
“Ah – there is no need to thank me for that, really,” he said, a little stiffly. Of course he told her, he thought inwardly. After all, Mia Fey had mentored Wright. That thought alone should have been able to make Edgeworth think a little more highly of her – after all, he had a great amount of respect for Wright himself, even if some of his courtroom tactics were… questionable – but he couldn’t bring himself to. First impressions left a big mark in him, usually, as he was still quick to judge, even though he no longer was as quick-tempered as he used to be – and he remembered Mia Fey still as the girl who fainted at the sight of death, and then nearly abandoned her chosen profession altogether. Overall, in Edgeworth’s mind, it had created the image of a weak-willed person, one he couldn’t wholeheartedly respect.
The question was unexpected, and he had the vague notion that she might be implying something that he was probably missing altogether. He frowned, though this time more in concentration, as he gathered his thoughts properly. “Well – as a matter of fact, it was rather enlightening,” he finally allowed. “I am well aware that the current judicial system is rather partial towards prosecutors – however, I believe that if one is set out to find the truth above all else, it doesn’t truly matter which bench you are standing behind.”
[ Ah, that inherent stiffness had reasserted itself. Therein, a reluctance to accept or acknowledge thanks. It seemed little had changed since she’d last encountered Edgeworth--while she was alive and well, occupying her own body--and, frankly, she realized his tact hadn’t improved any. And yet, she sensed effort upon his person. Something in the semblance of a minor effort, an adaption of sorts, permeated him. His words were guarded, not unlike his usual tone to her, suggesting that he realized, undeniably so, that he was addressing her deceased spirit. ]
[ Not that she blamed his incredulity, however. Few impressions could be changed. Mustering a tone of pristine politeness, Mia took a slight pause before answering him in kind. At the very least, he’d answered her question honestly.]
“I suppose that’s true. Court is intended for revealing the truth, though it can difficult at times. The partiality towards prosecutors...well, one can only understand that firsthand. You could say a trial’s path very much depends on its lead prosecutor, yes?”
(”Partiality” being a polite understatement, of course.)
“M-Mia?! What- what in the world?!” Lana took a few moments to recover from the shock of seeing her deceased friend alive again. “Y-Yes, I recall you telling me about them, but I never thought I’d witness it so soon…”
“…Ah. That case. Though it still haunts me to this day, I will answer everything I can to the best of my abilities.”
“I’m sorry for being so abrupt, Lana.”
“As well as appearing with no warning whatsoever. I assure you that I won’t be long. i realize the strain of all that’s happened. For now, I’d like to know how you’re faring. A prison sentence is no easy thing, is it?”

@channeledchief liked for a starter
In retrospect, it was easy to see the various points in time when Mia Fey had aided Phoenix during his trials from beyond the grave. Yet, for the longest time, Edgeworth had refused to believe it was real; that anything the Feys did was more than a hoax (even though he quite liked Maya as a person).
Now, here she stood, and since the Deauxnim murder case, Miles had been forced to admit that there was more to it than met the eye – he couldn’t look at her and say you’re not real.
That aside, his personal opinion of Mia Fey herself had never been particularly high.
“Ms. Fey,” he said rather curtly, his voice much cooler than what either Maya or Phoenix were used to. “Is there something I can help you with?”
[ The cool, curt tone of his voice hardly surprised Mia. This was the Edgeworth she was accustomed to, that she had resented all those years ago as an opponent in court. As was his reform, he simply refused to acknowledge the power of the Feys, not that this fact perturbed her any. ]
[ Mia, too, avoided mentioning her linage, and, in life, she deliberately left her Magatama uncharged. It was a symbol, as it were, of the lifestyle she had relinquished--escaped from. She could not blame Edgeworth for his incredulity. ]
[ She still maintained, however, that he was anything but a sterling gentleman. ]
“How kind of you to offer, Mr. Edgeworth, but I don’t require anything at the moment. A simple acceptance of my thanks will suffice. Phoenix told me about you filled in for him--impressively so, in fact.”
“If I may ask, how did it feel to be in the defense’s bench?’
[ @thxnder-head ]
“...Damon Gant, was it?”
“I remember you well. You and Lana were the Legendary Duo, though I see that’s withered away considerably. Whatever drove you to ruin all that? Can you at least give me one good answer...or is it a truth you’d rather not pry into?”
