speaking of lanterns. it's such missed opportunities to not have the lanterns and scott to interact more. with the fourth world on a whole. speaking of other characters i write, raker. the green lantern assigned to the fourth world, is introduced in a really interesting way and sorta explains why the green lanterns and fourth world don't interact much(for a horrifying reason, by the way, read raker's comics in orion and the 80 page giant). and i do like that, and it does make sense...but it's just. sigh.

EXTRA NOTE.     we've talked about this multiple times already, but scott helping with kyle's control and stability of holding being white lantern. of touching the source and understanding it's life equation. scott who has experience with both equations, and has an inherent connection to the source as a new god--but also beyond that. scott being able to be a sort of older sibling to him is very special to me. scott's alpha effect allows him to heal, to keep people together--and something about a scenario where kyle is literally falling apart, and scott being able to keep those pieces together?? also the whole thing parallel of them both sort of being gods and humans...scott being a god that is made human; kyle a human that is made a god. scott being able to put his experience into helping kyle and just!! AGH!!! the them.

pretty important note about scott—and the new gods on a whole, honestly!!—is that he is old. i mean hundreds of years old. scott is a little over three hundred years, and perceives time very differently to how people do. the fourth world ebs and flows in regards to how time works. between new genesis and apokolips, time feels different, it acts different. an hour can feel like thousands of years, a year can feel like an instant.

scott, despite being in his three hundreds, is still considered very young—the equivalent of being in his 30s, more or less. there's an implication in his comic that he's been on earth for more than a couple of years, since he escaped from the x-pit not long after he became a young adult. the new orion comic expands on it so that he had been living with thaddeus for longer than just a day! although i do believe he spent at least a couple of years wandering, learning. earth, despite being there for a pretty significant amount of time, still feels distant and unfamiliar. it's new, and he has not spent nearly as much time there as he did on apokolips.

it is very important to me that scott have an uncanniness to him. although he is the most human of the new gods, he remains the single holder of the anti-life equation--although darkseid held a fragment and orion the equation, neither have held it for as long--and he remains a god, a celestial, even in his humanity.

scott has definitively blue eyes, vibrant and always seeming to stare into more than just the face, the skin. there's a consistent characterization of scott where he seems to talk as if he knows more than he ever lets on. the only comic where he doesn't seem to have this trait is in the original mister miracle 1971...and even then, he still has that sort of trait with even the first issue where he very clearly doesn't tell anyone anything! it's to the point where every character that means him is constantly questioning what he's talking about or where he came from or what he has--

he is a mystery that is barely scratched the surface by the end of the comic.

this is made even more complex by the fact that orion 2000 introduces the idea that he has had the anti-life equation since he was a child. since he could remember, since before! leading to the incident when he was younger where he accidentally killed hundreds with it and vowed to never use it again.

something i really enjoy about mister miracle comics--or just in general his appearances--is that they always have an air of horror, or seriousness to them while also being...sorta definitely silly. mister miracle is a character that tries to be hopeful in all cases, tries to keep the energy up and the idea that freedom is always possible on people's minds. but he's also the first one to check for injured, he's the first one to want to have a solution, he's the first want to want to end the suffering when he sees it. and to be able to do it when he know it's going to happen. scott is a fun loving character, but he was raised on apokolips. he was raised under the idea that everything is hopeless, that the world is despair and everything is inevitably nothingness aside from darkseid because darkseid is, and nothing else every will be. what makes scott able to break out of that is his belief that it isn't true. that he can keep believing, keep grasping onto all that is beautiful and do everything he can to protect those them. scott is powerful for a multitude of reasons, but his main power comes from just being...a little insane, insane enough to try and always run straight into the problem and know how to escape it. to think and to learn and to help. he can lose all of his gadgets, his motherbox, his everything that might make him seemingly 'exceptional,' and he would still find a way to escape. not because he's the god of freedom, but because he will never give up, and he'll keep hitting his head against the wall until it finally breaks, or he finds a crack that he can exploit to break the wall before he does.

scott spent so much of his childhood in the x-pit. in a place that was constantly changing, in a cell that was designed to rid a child of it's hope, designed to break away the weakness of someone and harden them into something that they could put together in a manner useful for darkseid. but nobody could really break him. he was named for the irony--to constantly escape, to constantly be brought back, and to get away 'scot-free,' just to be beaten senselessly, to be tortured, under the assumption that eventually he would stop trying to be free. that one day he wouldn't get off scot-free. that he would die or give in, to lose that hope and love that he always showed in the face of every adversary.
