Omega Ruby is so rich with angst opportunity and i love it tbh. with team magma having the obvious type disadvantage and archie being the typical muscular macho guy while maxie is physically thin and frail and needs glasses, the whole rigid structure and air of professionalism of the team comes off to me as maxie trying to overcompensate for his faults. archie represents everything that maxie wants and feels like he doesn't have and is horribly insecure about. he's confident, he's conventionally attractive, he has the type advantage, all things that put him at least somewhat above maxie societally. so maxie spends years and years of his life meticulously setting up this structure in team magma to make it as efficient and effective as possible, he works his ass off trying to prove to someone (probably himself) that he's just as good as archie and his insecurities dont matter. getting the red orb and awakening groudon is the zenith of that, so of course he doesn't listen to tabitha when he tells him that groudon is going to end the world. he gets lost in his struggle to prove that he's not lesser and the second he sees how huge of a mistake he just made, every bit of pride that he worked to build up over the years just crumbles to dust in his hands. and its not that he's scared for everything to come crashing down around him and leave him falling, he's scared that the only place he could possibly land is archie. he'd have to admit to the perfect bastard who always got everything he wanted and more that he feels inferior to him. i dont think enough people toy with this idea
