What I Wish I Knew: Moving

My first adult apartment was a glorified hole in the wall. A studio with a stove that worked half the time, no air conditioning, a moldy shower ledge and frat boy neighbors that went to bed around the time I got up.

It was fabulous. We've all been there. Your 20's are for crap apartments, otherwise, how will you know how good you have it later in life?

What isn't fabulous, however, is moving. If you're moving into your first right-of-passage apartment, chances are you're pretty broke and laugh at the suggestion of hiring movers. I know I did. So, know that moving sucks but here are a few tips I've learned from multiple moves to make it, manageable.

1. Try to not move in the summer. Moving is hot. Carrying furniture, boxes and books is hot. Your apartment probably doesn't have air . . . And is hot. If you can help it, move during any other season.

2. Get help. No I couldn't afford a mover but I should could bribe my friends with wine and pizza. The more people helping, the faster it goes.

3. Get everything in before organizing. Accept that the first few days, your apartment is going to look like a department store going out of business. It's annoying but it's fine.

4. Clean! You seem lovely and hygienic but let's be real, not everyone is and not every landlord cares enough to clean between renters. Move everything in, clean then start organizing.

5. Never underestimate the power of an epic playlist.
