From the Eise Eisinga in Franeker, Netherlands, the oldest functioning planetarium in the world. This is actually located on the ceiling of the creator’s dining room, with a big gold sphere hanging from the center that represents the sun.

Johannes de Sacrobosco’s De Sphaera Mundi was one of the most popular texts of the Medieval period. As a manuscript, it was copied hundreds of times, and after the advent of printing in Europe its popularity only grew; nearly a hundred different editions had been printed by 1675.

This edition comes to us from 1501. The text describes the sphere of the earth–and the movement of the cosmos. If anyone still supposes that Medieval scholars thought the earth was flat, this book soundly disproves that notion. The universe as seen here functions on a geocentric model, meaning the earth was thought to be at its center.

Many copies of Sphaera Mundi feature volvelles. This copy doesn’t, though, so we decided to make our own.
