patterns inspiration || Ikenaga Yasunari
Having seen the traditional example of the abundant use of patterns in Japanese woodblock prints, I was very intrigued by the unspoken harmony within the patterns. How were the numerous patterns put together and how did the artist managed not to make them clash? Yasunari is a contemporary example of this mastery. He uses these patterns abundantly on the background depicted womenâs clothing yet done so with the utmost grace, emphasising the womenâs sensuality and exquisiteness.Â
pop surrealism a.k.a. lowbrow art
assessment 1: self-portraits
Pop surrealism, a contemporary contemporary art movement, has a very distinct calling card, since it incorporates pop culture references/kitsch imagery. I am inspired by pop surrealist artists such as Mark Ryden and Nicoletta Ceccoli. They are known to combine cute, innocent characters with absurd or even grotesque elements. Pop surrealism, as a descendant of surrealism, has retained the hyperrealistic painting style of its predecessor (i donât know if this makes sense but I noticed that the majority of artists painted detailed ârealistic works with surreal elements to make it look believable). Some artists such as Mark Ryden tend to blow a subjectâs body features out of proportion to achieve a âcuteâ look.Â
There is a debate on whether this is a legitimate art movement and whether lowbrow art can be categorised as fine art. I believe it is a very interesting and aesthetically stimulating art movement. And it has inspired me to experiment with conflicting imagery in my prints.
Louise Zhang (born 1991) is a Sydney-based artist whose work starts with the most basic unit of construction: the amorphous, inchoate âblob.â

Francesca Woodman
self-portrait  inspiration || Francesca Woodman
I like the way Woodmanâs photographs both reveal and conceal her presence. As the subject, she seems mysterious and airy. There seems to be a special connection between her and the places in which the photographs were taken.Â
