ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is a search database recruiters use to reduce the number of job applicants to consider, by filtering for keywords in the resume.
How to move the needle (meaning make an impactful change):
Open your resume in PDF; if you can select the words, then ATS can read your resume
Put the exact job title from the job description in your resume
Put keywords in headline (job title + 3-4 core skills), dedicated skills section (15-25 hard skills, comma-separated, no soft skills) and some in your bullet points
Put 8-12 phrases from JD word-for-word into the resume
Use AI to tailor your resume faster (prompt: extract keywords from JD and map them to your existing experience); you still need to judge the output
Before submitting:
does my title match JD word for word?
did I list 15-25 hard skills?
did pull exact phrases from the JD?
can I highlight every word in my pdf?
are those keywords in my headline, skills section and bullets?
