Said goodbye to my beautiful boy yesterday. He wasn't even ten years old. Cancer took him. Will always love and remember him as the sweetest most special cat. 💔

“No, the Arctic does not yield its secret for the price of a ship's ticket. You must live through the long night, the storms, and the destruction of human pride. You must have gazed on the deadness of all things to grasp their livingness. In the return of light, in the magic of the ice, in the life-rhythm of the animals observed in the wilderness, in the natural laws of all being, revealed here in their completeness, lies the secret of the Arctic and the overpowering beauty of its lands.”
― Christiane Ritter, tr. by Jane Degras, A Woman in the Polar Night (Greystone Books, 2010; first published 1938)

I need more Maya Hawke content! Just finished watching Wildcat on Blu-ray. Above are all the roles she played: Flannery O'Connor, Lucynell, Julian, Mary Grace, Hulga, Sarah Ruth, and Star Drake.
Each role besides Flannery (the author and subject of the film) was a character in one of Flannery's short stories, and the movie explored her life and beliefs through her writing. The stories are hard, honest and uncompromising, like their author, so the movie is not light fare. But it is challenging, absorbing, and in the end moving, as Flannery comes to grips with her relationship with her mother, the place where her writing and beliefs intersect, and the lupus that will end her life at 39.
Maya was marvelous! One can see why she connected with this author at a young age and strove to get the movie rights from the time she got into acting. Both are intelligent, determined, articulate, very talented women!

“That was how I looked at life sometimes, as a warm meal that was growing cold. I knew I had to eat, or else I would die, but I had lost my appetite.”
— The Dinner, Herman Koch
