Maul was born a slave to an old Dathomirian female (Talzin). Anakin was born a slave to an old Huttesse female (Gardulla).
Kycina came across a force sensitive man one time, she begged for him to take her child away from being doomed to be enslaved until death, and that man told her Maul was strong in the force and could grow to become a powerful warrior. That man was Palpatine. Palpatine was obsessed with the idea of immortality. Qui-Gon was obsessed with the idea of the chosen one who would bring balance to the force prophecy.
Palpatine's master, Plagueis, said Maul couldn't become a Sith apprentice. Qui-Gon's grand master, Yoda, said Anakin shouldn't become a Jedi. Palpatine trains Maul in secret. Qui-Gon teaches Anakin in secret.
After Plagueis dies, Palpatine officially makes Maul his Sith apprentice. After Qui-Gon dies, Obi-Wan officially makes Anakin his Jedi protege.
Maul is trained in Mustafar and later at Orsis Academy once he's old enough to be sent there. Anakin is trained in the Jedi Temple in Coruscant once he's old enough to be a Padawan.
Kycina was incarcerated and later punished by Talzin when she found out that Maul existed. Shmi was kidnapped and later killed by the Tusken.
The Orsis Academy massacre marks the beginning of Maul's fall to the dark side. The Tusken tribe massacre marks the beginning of Anakin's fall to the dark side.
Maul becomes attached to an older girl, Kilindi, and her death —that he's responsible for— breaks him enough for Palpatine to turn into his Sith apprentice. Feral is killed because of the Nightsisters' oppressive rule without Maul ever finding out. Owen is killed because of the Empire's oppressive rule without Anakin (now as Vader) ever finding out.
Maul (permanently) loses Savage when he's killed in a confrontation against a Sith (Palpatine). Anakin (temporarily) loses Ahsoka when she's killed in a confrontation against a Sith (The Son).
