-adult olms don’t have developed eyes (juveniles actually do, but the eyes degrade over time and are eventually reduced to vestigial organs hidden beneath a layer of skin) hence the mask. there’s nothing under it. it’s also modeled after sleep masks because olms are exceptionally sedentary animals and may go without moving for years on end

-compared to some other neotenic aquatic salamanders like axolotls, olms have pretty small gills, so i gave her short braids to mimic that

-the nose was a struggle. olms have incredibly developed chemosensory reception but their nostrils are borderline invisible. i started to doubt whether they had any during this, but they do, they’re just incredibly small

-a remarkably elongate and slender species with a large, blocky head. perhaps i should give her a stronger jawline?
