Oh to be a tiny creature nestled in a flower field
Oh to be a tiny creature nestled in a flower field
Can I just⌠talk for a moment⌠about how much I love how, if you know them well, words donât have synonyms?
English, for example, is a fantastic disaster. It has so many words for things that are basically the same, and I find thereâs few joys in writing like finding the right word for a sentence. Hunting down that peculiar word with particular meaning that fits in seamlessly in a structure, so the story flows on by without any bumps or leaks.
Like how a shout is typically about volume, while a yell carries an angry edge and a holler carries a mocking one. A scream has shrillness, a roar has ferocity, and a screech has outrage.Â
This is not to say that a yell cannot be happy or a holler cannot be complimentary, or that they cannot share these traits, but they are different words with different connotations. I love choosing the right one for a sentence, not only for its meanings but for how it sounds when read aloud. (Do I want sounds that slide together, peaceful and seamless, or something that jolts the reader with its contrast? Snap!)
I love how many words for human habitats there are. I love how cottage sounds quaint and cabin sounds rustic. I love steadiness of house, the elegance of residence, the stateliness of manor, and tired stubbornness of shack. I love how a dwelling is different to a den.
And I love how none of them can really touch the possessive warmness of all the connotations of home.
Words are great.
I did not expect to cry by the end of this, but I did. Which proves the point, no?
âThe difference between the right word and the almost right word is like the difference between a lightning bug and the lightning.â - Mark Twain (and one of my favorites, since I happen to agree with everything the OP said!)

DONâT LET THIS HAPPEN TO CEREAL!!!
Listen in the past the poor have had to improvise cheap food the rich never wanted as a means to survive. And over the many years of innovation made the food taste good until eventually the rich where like: âOh hay you actually like that garbage? Why on earth would you like it?â Then they try it, love it, start buying it, and then drive the price up so much it becomes a luxury good.
They do this and its devastating, the food typically never becomes affordable again. It donât matter how cheap the foo dis to produce, it doesnât matter if there is almost no meat on the bone or its super difficult to eat and messy. Once the poor discover how to make some bit of cheap food taste good, the rich take it away via driving the price of it up.
THEY DID THIS TO RIBS.
Ribs were garage meat. Just look at them, there is hardly any meat on the bone, you have to eat them by hand usually, and they are messy. They where an undesirable cheap source of junk meat. But the poor being the poor made them taste good. (Because they donât have much to choose from.) The rich discovered the meals the poor made with them and decided they liked ribs too. People discovered they could sell a few ribs to rich people and make way more money then selling lots of ribs to poor people and the price was driven up.
DONâT LET THIS HAPPEN TO CEREAL!!!
They did the same to brisket. You used to be able to get brisket for less than a dollar a pound, which meant you could get a twenty pound brisket fairly cheaply. And then you smoked it, sliced it, and had meat for weeks if not a full month. And it was tasty. I grew up eating brisket at least once a month because my family could afford it.
It was a cheap meat because no rich person looks at the dangly part of the neck of a cow and goes âooh, that looks tasty!â.
But then Food Network started showcasing things like barbecued brisket. Rich people started showing up at places that werenât just Rib Crib to get their barbeque. And the price of brisket went up. A lot.
I regularly see it for over five dollars a pound in stores now. And while yeah, that might not seem like a lot when youâre talking only a pound or two of meat, brisket is normally sold in ten to twenty pound sizes. Itâs become completely unaffordable to the people that made it delicious.
Sushi used to be really cheap, too, until it became âtrendyâ. Guess why youâre now paying twelve dollars for your order of California rolls? Because rich people discovered something that poor people had been eating for ages.
Noticed the prices of fajita meat, chicken thighs, or ham hocks has gone up recently? You guessed it. Rich people are taking our food and now weâre scrambling to afford the things that we grew up eating.
Lobster is a perfect example of this phenomenon. For hundreds of years, lobster was regarded as a sort of insect larvae from the depth of the sea. It had zero appeal as a âluxury foodâ until people living in NY and Boston developed a taste for it. Before the 19th century, it was considered a âpoverty foodâ or used as fertilizer and bait - some household servants specified in employment agreements that they would not eat lobster more than twice a week. It was also commonly served at prisons, which tells you something about prison food.
Only by cleverly marketing lobster as an indulgence for the privileged made it cost so much. It became a vehicle for enormous profit spawning a multi-billion dollar global industry in the process. This mythical affection for lobster flesh - not its practical value in terms of taste, nutrition, or any other reasonable consideration - drives its value.
LMAO. Wait.
Anyone elseâs eye twitchin?
Food gentrification is a long standing practice and itâs some of the most evil shit I can think of. Itâs why I refuse for example as someone living in the US to buy things with Quinoa in them. It is specifically pricing an indigenous population out of their prime staple food. Itâs a horrific invasion of one of the final requirements of staying alive.

have you ever noticed you pick up little habits and phrases from the people you love? itâs no wonder our hearts are so easily broken when people leave. we become a reflection of the people that we care about and those personality traits stick with us even if the people donât
I make my ramen the way a friend taught me in eleventh grade. Every fall, I listen to a playlist made for me by a boy I drove across a border to hook up with. I eat sushi because a girl who wonât talk to me anymore made me try it, and Indian food because my best friendâs parents ordered for me before I knew what I liked. There are movies I love because someone I loved loved them first. I am a mosaic of everyone Iâve ever loved, even for a heartbeat.

[ image description: A screen shot of a post that reads âDonât cross oceans for people who wouldnât cross a puddle for you.â Someone has crossed this out with a big grey X and underneath added âNo, do it. Do cross oceans for people. Love people, all people. No conditions attached, no wondering whether or not theyâre worthy. Cross oceans, climb mountains. Life and love isnât about what you gain, itâs about what you give.â End of descripton ]
I hate this post, I hate it so much. And let me tell you why.
At first it seems like a pretty good post, right? You should love people and do things for them because you want to or because itâs nice, or just because you love them, not because you expect something in return. Yeah. We learn that as kids. But listen. Listen to me. It is not that simple. Yes you should do nice things for people. Carry in your grandmotherâs grocerys even if she forgets to say thank you. Sure. But you should never, never, pour yourself into someone who does not give back to you.
Doing everything for someone who gives you nothing in return is not love.
A friend of mine worded it really well âThe point of the original post was to emphasise that your own mental/physical health is more important than someoneâs selfish needs.â Itâs not romantic to run yourself into the ground for someone who canât even be bothered to care about you. And not only is it not romantic, itâs unhealthy.
I have, on more than one occasion, âcrossed oceansâ for people who I do believe loved me, but who didnât even come close to crossing them for me. And do you know what I got out of that? The first one I lost 10 pounds because I was so miserable I could barely eat and I was throwing up what I did eat. And I was still doing whatever I could to be with them, and make them happy, even though they didnât seem to be willing to put any work in themself. Why bother, I was always there. The second one I ran my own mental health so thin that that literally could not do anything for him, all I could do is sit in the bathtub and think about how I coudlnât feel anything. But I still refused to turn my phone off and ignore his messages. I still made myself avaible to him because he âneeded me.â
There was nothing romantic about either of those situations (note: only one was a romantic relationship but the idea of giving and giving and giving when youâre gettin nothing back is romanticized whether itâs in a romantic or platonic relationship.) There was nothing beautiful or selfless about it. It was miserable. I was miserable. I can remember one of my friends telling me he missed me because all I could talk about was the person I had allowed to become my whole life.
And in the end, both of them stopped talking to me.
Donât believe anyone when they say the second part of that post. Itâs bullshit and Iâm really tired of seeing it romanticized. It tells people (especailly young girls) that this is an okay way for a relationship to be, that this is what they should be doing.Â
There is nothing selfish about demanding that your emotional labour be reciprocated. Thatâs what makes a relationship (romantic, platonic, or otherwise) healthy. Thatâs what love is. Both people giving. Both people supportin each other. Not one person giving until they have nothing left for themself.Â
Emoji Spell for a healthy and happy romantic relationship.
