Cakes did not become popular or common desserts until the 1900's because the ingredients were both hard to obtain and expensive. When they were consumed before the 1900's it was rare and exclusively by the wealthy.

So for the first hundred years or so cakes were considered a treat for only the high class for Jonah. But of course cakes from that time period were a lot different from modern cakes. Often containing dried fruit to help flavor and sweeten them, lacking chocolate due to how expensive it was, and only having an egg and sugar glaze for icing, since modern icings were an invention of the 1900's.

Then more variety of cakes became popular with the invention of box mixes in the 1930's introducing a wide array of cakes that by hand were either unknown or too difficult for the normal population to make.
