INTRO
Castello Laurenti was born somewhere in England to a Mother he never knew. She’s not dead... at least he doesn’t think she is. His Father hardly spoke of her. He always said she couldn’t “handle” him. But, truth be told, Antonio Laurenti was too much to handle for anyone. He was a brash, unforgiving, defense lawyer. A shark. Years in London had made him a prosecutors worse nightmare. He would stop at nothing to win his case. And, that meant nothing was off limits.
Cas’ Father had particular expectations set in place of Cas being his spitting image and predecessor. He was Antonio’s first and only child, and therefore he had a legacy to live up to. For that reason, Cas was almost always glued to his Father’s side. Wherever Antonio went for a case, Cas followed. Everything was a teachable moment to Antonio. Nothing was off limits, regardless of Cas’ age.
For years, it was like that. Bouncing from place to place, babysit by secretaries and personal assistants during business meetings. Learning from homeschooling books and the school of “hard knocks” as his Father liked to call it. If you could call jetsetting off to other countries hard knocks.
When Cas was 10, they moved and settled in New York City. Apparently Antonio had made a name for himself in the states, and there was a client prepared to pay him to move and certify in the States to be a personal lawyer. Cas never knew much about the client, just that he was a big name that very few people seemed to know too much about. This never struck Cas as odd, but then again, much about his Father’s work didn’t. Even if it would turn heads for others.
The problem with being isolated to the world view of one person, is the threat of having an unreliable narrator on the world. To Cas, Antonio was everything he wanted to be. Strong, independent, feared, revered— in Cas’ mind, his Father was nothing short of perfect.
Of course, Antonio was not the kind to admit to his faults or shortcomings. Anyone who knew him knew he was a conman in a Gucci suit. He was low down, dirty, and immoral. He won by any means necessary. And ‘any means’ often was not what would be consider upstanding citizenship and persuasion skills. It was built on bribes and power. He could be bought by the highest bidder, and that often lent itself to reprehensible choices. Like funneling mutant teens through Essex house instead of the prison system. Granted, he was none the wiser to what took place inside, but that does not absolve him of sin.
The fact that his Father was not such a hero would not make itself known to Cas for years. Any protests he was met with fell on deaf ears. Jealous and petty is how her perceived anyone that could criticize his Father, unaware of just how immoral he was. It wasn’t until he graduated Law School and entered the lawyer circuit that he realized just how right everyone was about his Father.
There was an expectation set upon him to be just like his Father. A con man, a winner at any cost. Someone who tossed his morals to the wind. A shark as they liked to say. But, this went beyond be aggressive in court. He had to bend rules but know to stop right before they broke. He had to win his cases. He was a Laurenti after all. There was an expectation there.
Going from thinking his Father was a the superhero in the cape to learning he was the man shrouded in shadows was a blow for Cas. Antonio will never know it, but it strained his relationship with his son. Cas couldn’t look at him the same anymore, but had spent so many years pleasing him that it felt like there was no other option but continuing to do so.
Cas learned quick how to lie and cheat his way to the top. It was oddly intoxicating in some ways. It felt so much easier than climbing his way up to the top through effort alone. Soon, he was respected as the spitting image of his Father. Tough, a winner, but most importantly, a snake in the grass who could get what he and anyone else wanted. And the better he did, the farther he pushed his conscious away.
It was only months ago that Jonas Goestch approached Cas with a proposal. Oust Maxine Brandt from her partner position, and it was his. Partner at 30 would be unheard— even better than his Dad. In some sick, avoidant way, that alone would be the best revenge. Being better than his Father. One upping the man who spent his life one upping everyone else. So, Cas agreed.
Now, Cas is an Associate at Brandt and Goestch, continuing to push his moral compass away, and find a way to push out Maxine. Whether or not Cas has what it takes to be that awful is what remains to be seen.
