Another Day in the Natural World
Another Day in the Natural World
It altogether amazes me that people can walk right past things like this and be totally consumed by whatever device they have in hand to keep them from interacting intimately with the immediate other world around them, be it their companion walking beside them, the child in a stroller, or of sights like these flowers. Maybe the general, developing impression that there is no intelligent designer…

Christy at the Easel Nikon D800 with 36 - 72 Series E lens reversed and at 72mm. Blur effect is all in-camera. Some vibrance added and shadows opened in post capture.
Not Sure Where it Is I just like the textures, especially around the door. The skim lighting worked well here.

A Multi-Generation Family Portrait
Nothing outstanding, just something I’ve had in mind to do for a while and finally got bored enough to do it. I’ve been collecting Nikon film SLR cameras off that auction site. These represent what I think is an unbroken chain from the F, front center, of around 1957, to the F6, top center, from around 2004 to the present. Yes, Nikon does still produce two film cameras, the FM10 and the F6.
I…

I was about to enter this contest, but it was like filling out paperwork to buy a house for each photo, so I decided against the idea. These are the 15 I would have put in the nature division. I’ll post them here. Some are repetitious from this blog, but I really don’t mind if you don’t.

Art in My Camera
Art in My Camera
I was driving out this morning to run an errand, not intending to take any photos, no camera along with me. I then noticed that the golf course was white with dew in the early morning light and that the usual Texas wind had gone on holiday for a few minutes, at least. I thought of my new reversed lens mode of photography, so I turned my horse around and went back to put together a macro outfit.

Missed It by THAT much!
Missed It by THAT much!
One of the predictable quips of Don Adams and Maxwell Smart can probably describe the effort below to capture a scurrying lady beetle with a reversed 28mm lens. I put it her anyway since it gives a nice view of the undercarriage of this member of the order coleoptera. That word means “sheath winged” since its translucent wings are encased below the hard covers made of chitin. There’s a word for…

Some Tough Negs!
I recently had a physical and discovered that my thyroid functioning is somewhat sub par. One result of that can be difficulty concentrating (I would say staying focused, but being a photographer and all…), and perhaps some memory lapses. I prefer to think of it as the absent-mindedness of a genius. In any case, the fix is in, the drugs are being taken each morning, and all will be peachy in…

Some Creatures at Dallas's White Rock Lake
Some Creatures at Dallas’s White Rock Lake
On a cycling outing at White Rock Lake on Friday, Christy and I noticed some wood ducks, a lot of drakes, near where we parked. We had no telephotos with us, so we returned Sunday to try to get some decent photos. She had a Canon 60D with a Sigma 150 – 500 zoom; I, a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 150 – 600 sports lens. We saw some drakes while cycling without our proper equipment due to its size and…

This is a scan of a fiber-based print I made yesterday in my man-cave/darkroom. This subject is the granddaughter my former college roommate and long time best friend ….yes, granddaughter. (He was commenting recently how could it be forty years since graduation?)
I was at his house assisting in a building project and had my trusty old Nikon F4 with me in case there was a home invasion attempt,…

A Failed Infrared Mission
A Failed Infrared Mission
I wanted to use the 4 x 5 camera with Rollei IR film to shoot something. I wound up with this. Actually, I tried other subjects, but the film base is so insubstantial that when I’d go to reinsert the darkslide into the holder after the exposure, the edge of the film would catch the edge of the slide and crimp the film. This is one that didn’t. I still don’t like it too much for some reason. Maybe…

Primroses
They are also called buttercups, I believe. These are in morning light, but also known as Texas evening primroses.
