Hello! Do you have any advice for pushing through a mental block when you're feeling discouraged by feedback on early writing drafts?
Get less feedback.
I mean it. If the feedback is discouraging, then you need a lot less feedback. The most important thing is forward motion. Write your story and keep going.
If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it. Or, if proper usage gets in the way, it may have to go. I canât allow what we learned in English composition to disrupt the sound and rhythm of the narrative.

Todayâs Writing Victory
My table is gone. Boxes are stacked. My typical writing station no longer exists. While weâre in the process of moving for the 100,000,000th time, I still show up every morning at 6:45 am to write. Today was not easy. I took 5 days off for a road trip. And it showed. Five hundred words felt like 50,000 words. Nothing flowed and I didnât feel inspired. But, I still showed up to do the work. 503 words was my final word count. And Iâm proud. Not because my writing was good- because it wasnât. Iâm proud that I stuck to my guns and committed. Tomorrow is a new day. Tomorrow my brain will work harder. Tomorrow my writing will be better. All because I chose to suck today.

Technically, Highgate Cemetery West. Itâs locked up. You need an appointment and a guide to look around (you donât need a guide with Highgate Cemetery East, over the road, where Karl Marx and Douglas Adams are buried) because itâs potentially dangerous (you could fall a long distance if the rotten boards, covering a deep grave dug over a hundred years ago, gave way beneath you) and because of 1970s vampiric shenanigans.
The graveyard in The Graveyard Book was built up equally from Highgate Cemetery West, Abney Park in Stoke Newington, and a little bit from Glasgow Necropolis.
Not to contradict famous author Neil Gaiman but you donât need a guided tour for Highgate Cemetery West. When I was there you had to have booked a time and pre-bought a ticket for it, but once youâre through the gates you are allowed to wander freely. Some areas are roped off, if I remember correctly, for safety reasons.
Cool! I just checked the Cemetery Website and they are now doing trials on self-guided tours in Highgate West because of social distancing (which would be good, but also bad because the guides are amazing and know their stuff so well. The first guide I ever had was American author Audrey Niffenegger, who was working as a guide in order to gather material for a book):

Open every day from 10am to 5pm. (4pm close from 31 October)
The East Cemetery is where Karl Marx is buried. Visitors may roam freely on this side, but there is an entrance charge.
Admission is by timed ticket which you can purchase here or upon arrival. If you are planning to visit both sides please buy a West Cemetery ticket as access to the East Cemetery is included in the price.
West Cemetery
Open every day from 10am to 5pm. (4pm close from 31 October)
Admission to the West Cemetery is normally by guided tour only, but weâre trialling open access to cope with social distancing. Admission is by timed ticket. For further information and to book, see Visit > West Cemetery
Please remember to allow sufficient time to visit the East Cemetery (which is included in the price)Â if your tour is late in the day.

This morning I was late for my writing session because I was taking care of our new dog. Regardless, I still completed my writing prompt:Â
Youâre at the concert of your favorite band when your friend, who got you the tickets, makes a surprise announcement: âI got us backstage passes, too!â Write about your experience meeting the band.
Hereâs a snippet:
I hate concerts, I hate parties, I hate people. But Iâm here at the Barnalbee Festival with my friend Sarah because I have to be. Her birthday was last week and I forgot. She pouted for three days, and when I asked her what I could do to make it up to her, she said âGo to the Festival with me!â

Todayâs victory has nothing to do with word count.Â
I received a rejection email this morning.
But hereâs the thing- I felt fine. I thought I would be disappointed, but I wasnât. AÂ âyesâ would have been nice, but a rejection was fine too. Why?
Because someone considered my work. My work! Someone took the time to read it, thought about it, and decided it wasnât a good fit. Thatâs okay. Iâm in no hurry. Now, back to work.Â

Hello, I just want to say that I love your prompts you write.
I was wondering if you could help me with some prompts, with a character that doesn't like to be touched?
I need some ideas on how they may be affectionate with someone despite the fact they donât like being touched, but they only like being touched by people other than people who they trust.

Affections without touching
Love Language - Showing, not telling love (all, except one are without physical contact)
Love Language - Showing you care (the ones without touching)
making an effort to spend time together
smiling at them from across the room
encouraging them to talk in a bigger group
making and bringing them food
asking them how their day was
showing them things that reminded them of them
keeping promises
asking them about things they enjoy talking about
watching movies and shows together
offering to help with chores
remembering things they told them
New ideas
a lot of smiling at each other
sending them pictures of things they find funny
sending good morning and good night texts
turning up the volume when the other's favourite song is on
making them their favourite food just because
bringing them take-out, when they know the other one's too tired to cook
listening to their ideas and letting them talk if they need to
