"No Other Way" - Cash Trevizo
Imagine a world without Bees. How would we react? What would be our scientific approach? I was given inspiration from the movie Jurassic Park on how to setup my midterm project/miniature environment. When we no longer have bees in our world, maybe we might extract their DNA and recreate them? and extract flower DNA to reproduce flowers that might have also died out.
My initial design started from a tea canister because that copper color reminded me of honey. I had gold material that had oval comb designs but not quite hexagonal to represent honeycomb. Since I could not remove the "Dead End" sign from the back of the canister, I moved my idea to a new concept with the bumblebees.
I truly wanted to push a temporary installation and after seeing Stranger Things, the Demogorgon's were recreated by the Germans and placed in containers. There I thought I could submerge my bees into similar constructs. I froze plants and two sets of bumblebees which were painted from cotton balls.
Afterwards I needed to push this scientific concept to my viewers and decided to create a tray that would indicate extraction of DNA. I used a Prisma colored Pencil cover and Clay. It took a while to find interesting objects to place on the tray. I pressed down to imprint where the tools were positioned to be prepped by supporting scientists.
I had a fun time creating this environment. I wish my colleagues could see it in person because the frozen items were so frightening to hold, to imagine.
