Poems written in youth
My soul will cast the backward view, the longing look alone on you. For only then, when memory is hushed, am I at rest. Oh! Leave me to myself, nor let me feel the officous touch that makes myself droop again. And hope itself was all I knew of pain. But why, ungrateful, dwell on idle pain? No goblets shall, for thee, be crowned with flowers. Come forth, and here retire in purple shade. ‘Tis pleasant near the tranquil lake to stray. How graceful, pride can be, and how majestic, ease. How richly glows the water’s breast, before us, tinged with evening hues. And what if he must die in sorrow! How bright, how solemn, how serene! The evening darkness gathers round. By wisdom, moralise his pensive road. I greet thee, _____, while I mourn thy doom. How blest, delicious scene! The eye that greets thy open beauties or thy lone retreats. Yet are thy softer arts with power inbued to soothe and cheer the poor man’s solitude. Left vacant for the day, I loved to roam. When not a star supplies the comfort of its light; only the waning moon hangs dull and red. Alas! The little joy to man allowed fades like the lustre of an evening cloud. We stll confide in more than we can know. Death would be else the favourite friend of woe. Hail freedom! Still have I found, where Tyranny prevails, that virtue languishes and pleasure fails. But foes are gathering - Liberty must raise red on the hills her beacon’s far-seen blaze. Rejoice, brave _____, though pride’s perverted ire rouse hell’s own aid. Lo, from the flames a great and glorious birth. O be wiser, Thou! I read, and loved the books in which I read. And nothing to my mind a sweeter pleasure brought. There was a Youth whom I had loved so long, that when I loved hom I cannot say. I sighed, and knew not why. We had no hope, and no relief could gain. I too forgot the heavings of my breast. No hope I sought; in sorrow turned adrift, was hopeless, as if cast on some bare rock. But what afflicts my peace with keenest ruth, is that I have my inner self abused. Bad is the world, and hard is the world’s law. I neither ask nor wish - forgive me, but forgive!
