Swipe left for second image.⠀ ⠀ Building tension for me depends on what I am writing, but the key for it the possibility for failure and not being dramatic with it. The movie 2012 is a great example of overusing the possibility of failure to the point of boring the audience. So when you do so, use moderation along with emotional investment. ⠀ ⠀ I started an anime today where a character died in the first ten minutes which the rest of the cast took hard, but I couldn't care since I'd only seen her for two minutes. Why would I care if this character died or not? You have to get your readers invested in the character you plan on tormen--ahem--writing about in your book to get that heart pounding tension.⠀ ⠀ Oh, and don't any anything easy for your characters. Are they running away? Have them doing so under fire. Or let them break a leg. About to miss the bus? That bus better be their only chance of leaving the city before the mob finds them.
