Racism is not the only thing black people face in their lifetime. There is also a thing called colorism. Itâs not just that they are discriminated because of their race, this is deeper.Â
A young African American Stanford Grad Student  Chika Okoro delivered an amazing speech on how colorism affects lives of black people with a darker skin tone. And you should not miss that.Â

10 Warning Signs for POC in Interracial Relationships
1. If your significant other claims to, or is known to âhave a thingâ for men/women of your race.
This is called fetishism, which generally consists of sexual/physical attraction based on stereotypes. For example: the âexoticâ Asian/African women stereotype, the sexually potent Black male stereotype⌠If youâre with someone who just is âintoâ people of your culture, try asking them why.Â
2. If they have a friend with racist views. Birds of a feather typically flock together, and when it comes to things like this, the rule still applies.
3. If they donât check (educationally confront) those friends when they express those views. What you fail to speak against, is what you ALLOW to happen⌠Iâll leave it at that.
4. If they donât bring you around family members. This is sometimes done to shield significant others from discrimination of family members⌠But beware, the mentalities of family members can be infectiousâŚ
5. If they are ignorant of, or not making an effort to learn about you or the history/experiences of people of your ethnicity/culture. Anyone who truly loves/appreciates a person will go out of their way to learn about the cultures which produced this person. Thatâs a no-brainer. When a person doesnât make the effort to learn about the societal factors which shape the life of their significant other⌠that is a problem.
6. If they claim to be âcolorblindâ, or that ârace doesnât matterâ or any of that other so-called post-racial, fake liberal B.S.
A person who says this is lying. Theyâre not saying that race doesnât matter to themâŚ. theyâre saying that deep analysis of such topics make them uncomfortable and for their sake theyâd rather just ignore any differences. As the saying goes âbeing blind to race is just ignoring something that you already noticed.âÂ
7. If you refer to dating them, or they refer to dating you as âtrying something newâ.
Doesnât sound right to me⌠If you want to âtry something newâ try a new pair of shoes, or a new show on Netflix⌠But you donât romantically try other ethnicities as if theyâre flavors of Ice Cream, you experience people for who they are.
8. If you seem to be the only person of your race that they are fond of.
Do I need to explain this one?
9. If they cosign your criticisms of your ethnicity
Iâ m not really a person who is big on criticizing members of my race when Iâm around people outside of my race. Some discussions should stay âin the houseâ metaphorically speaking. But if you must talk about these kinds of these, your significant other should just be a listening ear. Anything more is out of line.
10. If they cannot, will not, are afraid to, or unable to have discussions on racism.
This is a symptom of a person who is living in denial, ignorance, or both. Either way, it ainât healthy⌠Unless youâre in denial too, then yâall will probably get along fine.
hey guys!!Â
so since iâm a rising senior iâve been working hard all summer in preparation for applying to colleges this coming fall. throughout the duration, iâve found some amazing websites to help you through the process, and resources i think are worthwhile to check out.Â
set up an email specifically for colleges (best to do this before/during junior year) b/c
your inbox will overflow with college emails
you will hate yourself if you donât
use it as your email for college-oriented websites you sign up for
put it on interest cards you fill out during college fairs/visits
colleges are going to email/spam you 24/7 just direct them here honestly
google drive
make a folder for college
put your essays in there
you can share essays with editors really easily this way
make a spreadsheet of all the colleges you are applying too with categories like size, type, location, etc.Â
make a list of achievements, awards, teams, clubs/extracurriculars, etc. that you can refer back to during applications
make sure to have an emergency flashdrive with your important college documents on it
finding colleges & stats
cappex: helps find colleges that fit you, calculates admissions chances, helps you plan college visits, helps with scholarship search, etc.
through cappex you can access meritaid, a great scholarship resource
naviance: a college readiness worksite site that does a ton and is basically a combination of every single site listed. itâs used through your school, normally, so get in contact with your counselor about making an account
unigo: this site gives reviews/advice/experience from current or former college students regarding the school they attended, and also offers tips and tutorials for admission from professionals, plus a college database
collegenavigator:Â exactly what it sounds like. this site has a ton of info on schools and itâs really easy to use
collegeboard: general resource!Â
collegedata: lots of statistics and overviews of schools
collegeresults: shows the graduation rates of colleges
collegeinsight: gives info about affordability, diversity, and student success
admitted.ly: this is an awesome website (and app) for matching you with schools, and itâs really organized/manageable as well
collegeniche: this is basically yelp for colleges. reviews for students, by students, about specific colleges
organization/tracking
overgrad: tracks college and career goals
makemeafreshman: this website is an actual godsend. enter all the colleges you are applying to (including what type, such as early action, early decision, etc.), and it will generate a schedule of things you need to do and specific dates they need to be done by (submitting fees, completing the commonapp and FAFSA, etc.)
scholarship oriented
posse: organization that identifies gifted scholars, then groups them into âpossesâ by region, and hands out full scholarships to top collegesÂ
questbridge: links exceptional students (esp. low-income) with colleges, scholarship providers, enrichment programs, and employers
college greenlight: amazing for finding scholarships to apply for (they can find a scholarship for anything), plus does college matches based on criteria you give
majors
collegemajors101: provides info about a variety of majors, like course requirements, career options, etc.
iâll definitely keep adding to this list, and if you have any questions about the sites or have some you think should be added, please message me!
remember, the best thing you can do is get things done early. summerâs not over yet and there is still a lot of time between now and application due dates. make the most of it! get organized, and get educated about college.
happy studying/applying!

ATTENTION NDNS AND INDIGENOUS PEOPLES #TheReturnofRedPower
Me and tumblr user opwagun have been thinking about starting up a new hashtag for native people and other indigenous people as well (of south America, Australia, Pacific Islanders if they would like too, etc.) Took a while to think of a name but I think this one will be good, not intended to offend any older activists at all, the name is chosen because of the struggles that our people continue to go through and are still overcoming. I donât know how well it will take off and am kind of worried about being in over my head with this, but I really think it is a good idea!
#TheReturnofRedPower
Basically this hashtag is starting up for native people to be a platform to post pictures/selfies of themselves (or just text posts) along with a story or struggle they have encountered throughout their life as an indigenous person. Also speaking out on our issues, activism, and native news related issues. I will be reblogging selfies in the tag and that kind of thing! I think this will be a good platform for native people to use our voices. I know the #REDPOWER tag is also pretty active but since this is a new hashtag the scrolling will be smaller and easier to navigate and is meant for more so personal posts!:) this hashtag is in no way meant to overtake that hashtag and again not meant to offend any older native activists!!
Hope all my NDNs out there have a great day! Itâs ALWAYS a good day to be indigenous!đ Miigwetch!!
wow junior year sucks when u know ull need a scholarship to go anywhere :)
