sometimes i think about the history of coffee culture in islam and how it spread like it’s so funny
discovered by sufis who decided it was a miracle from Allah since it allowed them to stay up late into the night for night worship
miracle beans = UNLIMITED DHIKR
cue scholars debating for years about whether it’s haram or halal and if it should be classified as an ‘intoxicant’ or not
fast forward to 16th century ottoman empire, where a woman had the legal right to divorce her husband if he failed to provide her with enough coffee
europeans called it the “mohammaden gruel” or “devil’s drink” bc they believed it to be a “bitter invention of satan and his followers”
fast forward to pope clement viii finally giving in and tasting it to see what the hype is about and then stating: “This Satan’s drink is so delicious that it would be a pity to let the infidels have exclusive use of it.”
pope clement viii then proceeds to BAPTIZE THE COFFEE BEANS
the tags on this post are some of the funniest i’ve ever seen in my notifications but this one made me choke on my Mohammedan Gruel
GROUNDS FOR DIVORCE
Some hand sheets I made for the animation team! I looked at how Dana drew hands a lot and coupled it with my own anatomical knowledge of hands.
isn’t it amazing how the width of the skirt, the heft and color and lift of it, changes the whole tone of the sculpture? Her previous tutu sagged on her body, and I remember when I saw it I thought of wilting flowers—the crushed quality of the fabric and the multilayered brown just added to that sad, wistful effect; I thought Degas was conveying a kind of loneliness, a sense of being left out in the cold, a girl not quite a ballerina.
and then the new skirt! She looks like a Dior model. She fits with other paintings Degas made of dancers, and her whole pose reads completely differently. She looks like she's about to lift off or float away. The skirt is still aged but it’s no longer tattered. She's a dandelion now, ready to happily dance away, not a girl kicked out of the ball. It’s shocking that her pose hasn’t changed at all, because the entire sculpture reads differently now.
And fascinating, too, that we don’t really know what Degas “intended.” All the changes that have happened to this sculpture over the years is a collective vision of what a Degas sculpture should be. From this video, it sounds like he didn’t plan for the bronze (which adds the tone of memory, solidity, history). He didn’t envision the skirt being dyed to match the body or its decay. It sounds like we’re not even sure how full he made the skirt originally—this conservator is going off of historically accurate looks from the time, ignoring whether degas might have intentionally flouted those to make a separate point. This is a Theseus’s ship of a masterpiece. Gorgeous and weird and totally divorced from what it started as.

I live near UVU. One of my parents teaches there. My family and neighbors and friends got pulled out of school, and everyone at my work and in my classes were discussing it. My thoughts churn dissonantly.
I wish it hadn’t happened. I know, I know, the harm he has done (and will inadvertently do as a martyr) is unforgivable, unfathomable. But a man died in what used to feel like a safe place and now everyone I love is more scared than before. I teach a ten year old kid art and he was terrified today.
On the other hand, I am stunned and ashamed by how strong a reaction this one death has provoked in the halls I walk, while Gaza goes unmentioned. ICE rips people off the streets for having brown skin and no one with white skin seems to know or care.
I fear the repercussions. I ache for my community. I rage at their selective empathy. I weep for the countless who are suffering here and elsewhere from countless causes.
I hope I can make a difference somehow.
Cheers to 10 years of making videos 🥂

Today’s highlights in my ongoing project to read through and transcribe the letters of Rachel (a wealthy Victorian girl at boarding school on the East Coast in the 1890s) include…
Rachel’s cousin Will and his Yale roommate Allen both have the measles. Rachel shows limited sympathy (”Poor boy!”), before immediately mocking them and calling them “childish” for getting a disease only little kids get.
Rachel and her roommate “B” (It stands for Bertha!) attempted to steal a sign (what sort idk) from a fair they went to but found they “were carefully guarded”. She wishes Will could have been there to help.
Will has a crush on a girl named Jenny, who Rachel knows, and is constantly asking Rachel if Jenny has mentioned him.
“B” often sits next to Rachel as she writes and suggests things to add to the letter or just generally distracts her.
Will and Jack, who are brothers, don’t write to each other. They write to Rachel and tell her to write to the other and pass on a message for them. Rachel keeps asking why they do this, but goes along with it anyways.
Rachel always explains why there are ink blots or areas of sloppy writing in her letters. Explanations so far include such classics as: the dinner bell just rang, it’s after lights-out and I’m writing this in the dark, “B” is shaking my arm, “B” is kissing me, this pen is broken, the postman is almost here, and there was a bee.
For her 18th birthday Rachel received: a new Kodak camera, eighteen white rosebuds, silver manicure scissors, a pair of shell side combs, a silver pencil, and a vase of pink roses. However her favorite present was from her father who wrote to say she could just buy her own present and he would pay for it.
Rachel is always mentioning the pictures she takes with her Kodak. I wish I knew what happened to them.
In addition to Calvé, Marlowe and Sothern, Rachel has now also gone to see performances by Ellen Terry, Henry Irving, John Philip Sousa, Ignacy Jan Paderewski (playing the piano, not governing Poland), and freaking Sarah Bernhardt!
Rachel likes to put question marks in the middle of sentences to denote sarcasm; i.e. “I am very ? sorry for you.” and “Men were not excluded and we had the pleasure ? of meeting several.”
Your 1890s slang word of the day: “squelch” (verb) - to be lectured or punished for something. Example: “I expect to be squelched unmercifully by mama and papa.” Can also be used as a noun as in: “This term we have had nothing but squelches.”
“Rachel is always mentioning the pictures she takes with her Kodak. I wish I knew what happened to them.”
Update: It took eight years, dozens of emails, an unbelievably kind invitation from Rachel’s granddaughter (also named Rachel) and 16 hours of travel but…
